208 Catalytic convertor - Big crack

Post by chase »

Hi ,
Has anyone else had this problem ?
My daughters car (2013 1.2 82 hp 208) started getting noisy in the exhaust area but at first I couldn't find anything .
Then the occasional fault relating to the sensors either side of the Cat .
Eventually the noise got worse . This is what we found

There was also another small crack .
What could have caused this - any ideas from any one ? Is it a common fault ?
The exhaust system was all intact and fixed correctly .
New CAT purchased fro Euro car parts , we had to prise off the cladding and fix it on the new CAT with wire .

Do the insides of the cat appear to be in tact ?
Has the car ever had any running problems, particularly a faulty coil pack & been ran like this for a while ?
Were all the fixing in correctly ?

Hi Wheeler ,
Thanks for the reply .
Inside of CAT looked intact , thought about welding it up !
Exhaust fixings ect were all good , no strain on the CAT .
No coil or ignition /mixture type faults when the noise started or for quite a while after .
It got noisy like there was an exhaust leak but I couldn't find anything , the noise got slowly worse until I could detect the blowing round the back of the CAT where the insulation had got "blown" out About this time we got faults relating to the 2 sensors either side of the CAT .

At least on Citroëns (C3/C4 Cactus) with this engine there has been a lot of cats changed due to a service "campaign".
Check with your Peugeot dealer, they might replace it for free.
I have various repair handbooks and wiring diagrams for C5 mk1, Xantia, XM, Berlingo and C3 mk1.

I would weld it and if you can weld some support straps to help take the strain off the joint.

All the brackets ect were perfect , the steel pressing has failed not the welded joint .
The cat is securely fixed to the manifold and the bracket at the outlet end .

It's probably a manufacturing defect, i bet there's a service bulletin for it. Should be warranty!

Do you have any mandatory warranty on the depollution system?

Hi C G ,
my daughter did not take up the servicing at a Pug dealers after buying the car .
Do you think she could claim for a default ?

You could try asking a dealer if it is under extended warranty/ "service" campaign, showing the pics.
Or taking it to a dealer with the description "there is a loud exhaust noise in the engine bay"

Hi, what I have noticed about the 208 cat is that the bottom bracket is bolted straight to the body and not making any allowance for the torque of the engine and putting strain on cat and over time it will crack, (design fault)
