Windscreen with sensors

Post by doctle »

I have a crack in my 307 windscreen does anyone know if I can replace it with the cheaper windscreen that doesn't have sensors?

The windscreen doesn't come with the sensor - the module is separate as a rule and is attached to the windscreen from the inside roof console. When they replace the windscreen they just re-attach the sensor and may / may not replace the gel pack.. I would insist on this, as once removed, they tend to go cloudy and this reduces the effectiveness of the light / rain sensors.

No worries - the sensors can be very expensive - hence they are re-usable as long as they are fitted back properly. I made a claim against Autoglass, when I recently had my windscreen replaced due to the pitted glass on my C5. Sure as day follows night, the next time it rained - the wipers were not wiping at all on auto - so had to use manual. They had to send an assessor out, and verified they were not working prperly as I said they wouldn't in the first place. £250 later on their insurance - after I ensured they had the correct part number! All perfect again now.

Will getting a screen through insurance affect it? Over here it doesn't count as a claim and doesn't need to be declared to next years insurance company.

Not quite correct I'm afraid. It is a claim but usually does not affect your no-claims discount.

I'm afraid it does need to be declared and, while it won't affect your NCD it quite likely will affect your premium.

I know; I had my rear screen replaced in February on the C5 X7 and I had to search long and hard for a decent price for my insurance in May. And each time I had to declare the screen replacement on my query.

I think you've been had.
I've had a fair few screens repaired or replaced and I've asked specifically if it is declarable, the answer has always been no.
It's never raised my premium either but crashing a 306 did.

The only time I have heard of it the way it happened to you was on Watchdog when a lady had her policy cancelled for not declaring a windscreen replacement. I don't remember the outcome and cannot find it on google but it is the reason why I specifically ask. You see the price I pay for my cars I'd rather replace a car than take a hit on insurance.

Do you buy your insurance through a comparison site? They may well be adding a few pounds for themselves with the extra question. I noticed a few of their tricks years ago and have steered well clear of them.

I use comparision sites then phone the company directly and usually manage to get it cheaper. Even when I had a £1400 plus glass claim for the panoramic roof on the c4 vts it made no difference to my prices since.

I've also just checked my policy document with Esure, whom I am currently with:

Their FAQs state:
Will a windscreen claim count against my No Claim Discount?

If we’re only replacing the glass or repairing a chip or crack, then the claim won’t affect your No Claim Discount.

If your windscreen includes Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) which needs to be recalibrated, you’ll have to claim this under the Accidental Damage section of your policy, which will affect your No Claim Discount unless protected. This is because ADAS recalibration isn’t currently available through windscreen repairers.
From what I've been told from my Citroen Dealer - these ADAS systems are a pig to recalibrate. A customer with a new C4 Picasso with the radar system module built into the front bumper had some work done requiring the bumper to be removed and it took them 2 days to recalibrate it and a significant amount of mileage to boot! It has to be done on the road and if the module is slightly out of alignment - it won't play ball. So I seriously hope they have refined that by the time I get my next car with Active Cruise Control!

Yes the windscreen can be replaced with the basic one. I've done it. Throws up a reminder about auto lighting fault on the centre display for a few seconds after turning on the ignition. I'm not even sure that the windscreen replacement caused the problem. Of course the auto wipers no longer work. I could possibly reprogram the BSI to eliminate the auto lighting but never bothered.
As regards declaring a windscreen claim to insurers when looking for a quote, it varies from company to company. Some want to know about them, others don't. What effect it has on their willingness to quote or on the size of the quote, I don't know.
I've never yet seen it to affect the NCB.

Thanks for that BX. My sister has a 307 with a stick on mirror maybe the sensor is elsewhere? I don't like the auto lights feature as I like to have the lights on all the time Id prefer the lights came on automatically when the car started. My front fog lights don't work either, light comes on the cluster there's power at the fuse bulbs are good, could it be a faulty BSI? Is no front fogs a test fail?
