Peugeot 307 Rear Magnetic ABS Rings

Post by SuperKev1969 »

Hi,

First Post - Need some help.

I have a Peugeot 307 2003 HDI 90 Diesel Estate Car - Reg KLZ 9900.

I damaged the rear ABS Sensor Rings whilst trying to clean them as I was getting a fault code. I removed the little raised segments and now my speedometer does not work!

I have been trying to source replacements but am having no joy in finding the proper size.

I took off the old ones and they are approximately 70mm inside diameter.

The new ones I got from eBay have an inside diameter of 77.8mm and the seller tells me they are the correct ones for my car, Part Number 454919, even though they do not fit, they are way too big.

Could anyone advise me where I might get new replacement Magnetic ABS Sensor Rings for the rear hub on my car please? I need to know what speed I am going.

Many thanks,

Kevi

Hi Kevi

Welcome!

I've moved your post to the Peugeot section. There are 2 sizes for the rear stub axles / bearings, and this presumably knocks on to the ABS rings as well. Yours is presumably the earlier, smaller, type. I'll try and find a part no later - not sure if they are available separately from Peugeot.

Can the seller of the ABS ring not supply the correct one to you going by the size and number of segments? They are clearly wrong and at the very least he should refund you. It's not good enough to say that they should be the correct ones and leave it at that!

Thanks RichardW & Paul-R

I contacted the guy earlier and he says he will send me another set of Magnetic Sensor Rings for a Peugeot 206 at 69mm diameter and they should fit, although I am unsure. Though I do not know if they will work or affect the speedometer. I said I would post the original ones back. I will ask for my money back if they do not fit.

It's just that it is so hard doing all the work and not getting a positive result.

Will you let me know the part number of the smaller hub magnetic sensor ring if you find out please?

Many thanks,

Kevi

Make sure that you count the segments and that they are the same. I once wanted a replacement driveshaft for something and there were at least 3 different rings fitted with differing numbers of segments in the pile of S/H ones at the breakers.

Thanks Paul-R,

Unfortunately when I cleaned the hubs aggressively, I removed the segmented pieces so don't know how many there were.

I have found a little piece of the magnetic strip just now and deduced there are 24 raised segments on a quarter of the ring, therefore making 96 on the entire ring itself.

The issue I have is that the new ring I bought (wrong size) has the segments hidden under the coating and cannot be counted, as far as I am aware. The new rings might be the same.

Any suggestions?

The seller has popped 2 new 69mm diameter rings into the post today so hopefully I should get them by the weekend and be able to tackle the job.

Will keep you up to date.

Kind regards,

Kevi

I was going to say count the number of segments on the front but then had a sudden moment thinking that maybe they're not. Hopefully someone will now for sure.

Hi Paul-R

Yeah, the Magnetic ABS Sensors on the front wheels are built into the actual Wheel Bearings as opposed to a separate metal ring hammered onto the hub at the rear.

Maybe someone will know the correct part number of the Magnetic ABS Sensor Ring and know where to get it.

Kind regards,

Kevi

I can't see why there wouldn't be the same number of segments. It's far easier for electronics to compare the pulses from all four corners, which should all be the same when going in a straight line, rather than having to apply a correction factor. It could be done but it's easier to not have to.

The segments are not visible on these sensors Paul, as they are magnetic, not toothed like earlier ones.

I looked on servicebox, but the part number you listed is the only one given, so no idea what is going on there! The two sizes I was thinking of are in fact for the later cars where there is no separate rear hub. I think you will have to pull the hub which may well wreck the bearing, so you may end up with a new hub (with ring!) anyway.

Very interesting that Richard. I was not aware of the change. Thanks.

The front ones are mag too - and built into the wheel bearings. If you install the bearing back to front, no ABS....

Re: Peugeot 307 Rear Magnetic ABS Rings

Post by SuperKev1969 »

Hi again,

Just thought I would update on my ABS problem.

I had to send back the ABS Sensor rings that were the wrong size. The seller has refunded me.

I purchased & installed 2 new 'old' hubs from eBay for the rear wheels that also had both ABS Sensors - (they come with a length of wire back to the first connection)

(It was interesting to note that whilst the ABS Rings on the original rear hubs were damaged by my aggressive cleaning, my car would not display any speed whilst driving, they must be connected somehow to the speedometer) - Thankfully, that is fixed now with the new 'old' hubs that came with ABS Rings & ABS Sensors.

I also replaced both front bearings (magnetic sensors built into bearing) as well as both ABS Sensors - (they also come with a length of wire back to the first connection)

Unfortunately I am still getting the problem.

The car feels great to drive but is frustrating this warning light never goes out.

I spoke to a mechanic friend with a view to getting a diagnostic computer to reset the codes but he said that as the ABS Unit was not part of the engine, his diagnostic computer would not work with ABS Unit, at least that's my memory of the conversation.

I am now completely lost.

I have also checked the fuses and all seem fine.

Thanks for your advice.

Regards,

Kevi

You need to get it on Diagbox to see what it is upset about - there are 2 users with the software listed in NI, but neither have been active recently (see https://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/ ... 19&t=29178) so you are probably left with taking it to the dealer, or buying your own kit (for around the same price as a code read at the dealer!).
