Urgent 1.6 HDI exhaust smell in cabin

Post by Adam.007 »

Hi Guys

I'm a new member on this car forum :)

308 1.6 HDI 110
Year: 2009

Quite often i start to get an awful wiff of exhaust fumes sort of smell entering into the cabin. Some time the smell is not that noticeable but i do find it hard to breathe. i have to constantly drop the windows down. When driving for short or long periods you start to feel tired and sleepy.

recent work i have had done to the car is stated below:

1. Oil Change - Garage
2. Air/Fuel/Pollen Filter - Myself
3. Turbo replacement- Garage
4. EGR pipe, cooler, EGR valve removed. Cleaned out egr pipe, replaced EGR Cooler and EGR Valve - Myself

I really cant stand driving the car, i find it hard to breathe with the windows up.

Guys i would be forever grateful if you could advise me of what could be loose or require replacing to get rid of the exhaust fumed entering into the cabin.

Thanks

Adam :(

The usual cause is a leaking injector - the seals/copper washers burn through, especially if they have not been properly fitted.
With the bonnet open and engine idling you may be able to see smoke issuing from on of the injectors where it interfaces with the cylinder head and also hear a 'chuffing' noise - in severe cases you will see what looks like bits of coal around the injector.

This isn't as bad as it sounds usually, I've had it happen a couple of times and entrusted repair to my local Citroen specialist with excellent results.

It has been mentioned however that the 1.6 HDi can present special problems inasmuch as the injectors can snap off when attempting removal.

It could also be a leaking pipe considering the work recently undertaken.

Nah, Steve, the Turbo's been replaced - odds on they have not managed to get the joint between the turbo and the DPF gas tight. Been there done that.... look for soot on turbo centre and oil feed pipe. You have to make sure that you lift the DPF onto the turbo before you tighten the clamp up, otherwise it drops down and doesn't seal. Sadly this means taking the head shield off the turbo, which means taking the rad out again....

Many thanks guys for your replies :)

Apologies forgot to also mention that the injector copper seals were also replaced at the same time when the turbo was replaced. Work carried out by garage.

The EGR valve was also replaced with a Genuine peugeot part. Was wondering if the 2 bolts for the EGR valve were not tightened properly could this be the cause of fumes entering into the cabin or possibly because the clamp that connects between the Egr Cooler and EGR valve was not pushed in hard enough and tightened correctly.

The following work was carried out myself EGR PIPE, Cooler and EGR Valve, could i possible have missed something out or made an error or does the fault lie else where

Hi

Update:

Exhaust smell has NOW Gone....

Had it booked to the garage and told them to pay special attention around the turbo end. He came back and mentioned car drives fine but we cannot trace where and how the fumes are entering into the cabin.

On an interim service had checked to see if all injectors were tight. It turned out that the 3rd injector was loose. The fumes smell have now gone.... I'm guessing it was down to loose injector..... (Happy Days)

Thank you ever so much guys. Really appreciate it :)

I have the same symptom (exhaust fumes in the cabin not long after a turbo replacement) but this time it's RichardW who deserves the cigar.

Running the engine with the bonnet open you can see the odd whiff of smoke coming up from under the DPF heatshield.

Thanks RichardW! :)

Experienced all these issues at once on the work's 307SW.

The car never gets looked after, people just riding the arse off it and now it's on it's way out!

Had the DPF off and cleaned, the turbo is on it's last legs, it's had a new injector (this was the no.2 injector) - it was covered in the previously mentioned "coal" due to a squashed copper seal, new EGR valve (the position sensor was fried, and the manifold from the cooler into the throttle flap housing was totally blocked apart from a 3mm aperture in the carbon/gunk).

And the gaffer wonders why he can't sell the car on......

Hey , so Iv had this issue for some time also , I removed the heat shield tonight and there are no signs of soot around the turbo to dpf connections and Iv also replaced the injector seals some time ago as one was leaking , there is however some smoke/soot coming out the wastegate and when I sprayed some soapy water on it (cold engine) it bubbled a fair bit so I'd assume that's the issue , anyone else had this ?

I still have this on my Dispatch, the smell that is, after having the injectors re curbed with new seals and copper washers, due to one leaking. As it happens the injectors are totally gone, and need replacing, will get it done in a couple of weeks, apparently the smell can linger for a long time afterwards.
Cheers Rich

This reminded me of the day one of the mechanics got married and the bad boys, his workmates, wired a kipper to the exhaust pipe of the honeymoon car. :-D
