Car won't crank after engine stopped mid drive

Post by M1tche1l »

Hi,

I have just changed the transmission in my Peugeot 407 1.6 sw, deisel, put it all back together.

Turned over first time , done 15 miles in it and whilst driving down a dual carriage way , the engine went off whilst fully accelerating and I rolled onto the hard shoulder.

I then tried to crank , nothing !!! Not even a relay click.

Spliced pin 2 and applied voltage and the starter turned the engine but wouldn't fire ???????

Please help !!!

Hi M1tche1 and welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you have upset something - first off check all the basic connections especially the ones you have come into contact with. Next do a bsi reset (do a search on this forum) for (bsi reset procedure)

Next get a diag done.

Make sure the diag kit is a decent DiagBox clone, and not a generic code reader. The PSA group uses their own proprietary protocols, and generic readers can struggle to make sense of the codes. A decent Diagbox clone will understand Peugeot and Citroen codes, and can do far more than just read error codes. The units from Easy Diagnostics have a good reputation.

My money's on something simple like a loose connection or a tripped crash switch. Not sure on where it's located on this car but the inertia switch was loose on our Xantia and caused the engine to just cut out.

One area I would look closely at is the main engine earth strap since you've had the gearbox off, and connections to/from the underbonnet fuse box as I imagine that'd have been disturbed too. Hopefully diagbox will help, but if a main supply for an ECU has gone west you may get no comms so I'd double check all wiring first off.

Hi ,

I plugged in a code reader and it was unable to link.

I haven't got access to Peugeot planet etc, does anyone know if there is anyone around the coventry area with Peugeot planet / diagnostic kit ?

I am at a complete stand still , 8 tried a bsi reset and that didn't improve my issue ☹️

If you're getting no communication at all then it's possible the ECU isn't powering up, have you checked all your wiring plugs/earth points etc (particularly any disturbed during the recent work & maybe not clipped fully home, which could have popped loose on the drive causing the problems you have)?
