Heres a question, can I leave the injectors and glowplugs in the head if I have to have it skimmed? Given that I have a horrid feeling one glowplug might be stuck, and the injectors are f... Tight!

Wouldn't be my choice, given that the head will be machined and pressure-washed. They might ?? get in the way for the machining guys, too. If you can't shift them with the proper injector socket, just ask the machiners to whip them out. Might be worth getting them serviced/recalibrated while out; cost me about €70 the set here a few years ago.

That was my thought, the elder suggested I leave them in but can see them getting in the way. Another thing that should have come out when the head was still attached!!

Yet another daft question

So injectors, plugs, cam, buckets etc all out. Spoke to a local firm who will skim it for £60ish with a days turnaround.

Put the straightest edge I could find across the block corner to corner and didn't appear to be horribly warped (theres a smidgin of space in the middle, possibly straightens out when torqued)

However

Do the valves need to come out? Looking at it it'll need the lightest of skims (maybe even just enough to clean off the gasket imprint) and the chambers are ever so slightly inset into the head arent they?

Image

I've also been told that I should be storing the injectors wet so they don't sieze, but they've only been out for a couple of days and not hooked up to the pump for about a month?

If you have the head skimmed by your firm, they will probably also remove and lap-in the valves for you, if you ask them.
Injectors will be ok; just wrap them up in a bit of clingfilm to keep them clean. They will have fuel inside them, which will protect.

Cheers bud. I owe a few people on here a pint!

Didn't ask that of them tbh but if its a few quid more it's worth getting them to do it (or if its the same or cheaper than a spring compressor!)

Guys, i have an errant bolt I can't place. Its a torx t30, dome head about 2cm long, black. It's a bit oily so should have been somewhere south of the head but it's in the pile of bolts with the engine lift points/thermo housing so came out around those but I bloody can't figure it out.

Nevermind, think its one of the bolts for the expansion tank and it made it's way into a random box!

In other news, the heads on and tightened to 60nm, belts on and tensioners pump etc. Threw the towel in when I couldn't maneuver the exhaust mani because my arms were dead from trying to stop the tensioner plunger flying into the stratosphere every 5 seconds while battling the tensioner on!! But the engine mount is back on and mounted to the body so I can at least get at it underneath again for the turbo drains and feeds and then angle tighten the head bolts (220° )
