ABS CONTROL MODULE

Post by Keir »

hello eeveryone

so I have a C4 Grand Picasso. i was having trouble with the right hand speed/ABS sensor. it was fixed up until the other day when it decided to light up my dash like a christmas tree once again..
Ok So I pluged in the diagnostics and and cleared the faults. however after 20 yards driving it popped back on again,
anyway it tells me my ABS control module is shot ans its permantly shot. Ive not done much on Citroen but have no fear in going at it,
question is, where is the ABS module located, as I am going collect 1 this very day.
I can do the work myself, its no biggy for me so long as its not located in some ridiculous place :rofl2:

Anyway if there is aanyone on here who can advise me of anything that may crop up to make my life evem more complicated, please feel free to let me know :rofl2:

Thanks Keir

Are you sure it is the block? A wiring communication can cause issues.

The ABS / ESP hydraulic block contains the block and the ECU as a unit. A replacement will need to be coded to the vehicle and the correct options configured, so you'll need Diagbox for that.

If you want specific part numbers, post up your VIN - they are not all the same.

hi Marc thanks for the quick reply,

I did a continuity test at the plug where the sensor plugs in this morning as we did have an issue there before, but I Have continuity there, it used to only do this in wet weather,
I have checked the wiring up at the battery for signs or rotting wire insulation but There are no signs
also i put my meter on the blue wire that supplies the power to the module at the fuse box, I have full power there, although that doesnt say its not gone further along the line
Also i have a guy to encode and set the correct configuration

its hurting my head now at this point

ThankS Keir

You haven't put your VIN up - I'll need this to locate the module for your specific vehicle as you haven't specified engine code or year. (Your VIN will be masked automatically - only staff can read it).

Right, you had a digit short - missed an '8' out.

So you have a C4 PICASSO ESTATE - LEISURE 1.6 HDI 115 (DV6C) piloted manual gearbox 6.

So the correct Part Number for your Picasso is: 4541WP, item (1) below:
C4 Picasso ABS.PNG
You'll need to remove the front left hand (passenger side) wheel, and splash guard to access it:
C4 Picasso ABS Block A.PNG
C4 Picasso ABS Block B.PNG
A word of warning - make sure you record or take a screenshot of all the existing parameters in the ABS / ESP ECU before replacing the unit! There are several options when reconfiguring - if you get the wrong ones, it will not function. This mist be done before removing the old unit.

I've got all that from your VIN Keir- that's why I asked for it :-D

It's not an automatic by the way. It uses a standard manual gearbox and clutch as used on any manual, the exception that the gear changes and clutching system are controlled by electro hydraulic actuators. In other words it does not have a torque converter like a proper automatic.

Sorry yeah I know it’s not a proper automatic so to speak, thanks for your help. I’m on the way to get the ABS Module now but I will check the number with what you said to me. Thanks Keir

There are 2 different systems -
An ESP System and ESP with ASR+ which is a later traction control, so the unit must be correct. 4541WP is the correct one - but unfortunately as is common with ebay sellers they tend to rope together the part numbers as they haven't got a real clue what the differences are and why they are different parts. So I can't give you an alternative number - but if you can take a picture of the label on your unit, it will have the correct long number on it starting '96**** etc'

The modules changed several times and the one you need is from build date 12383 (4th October 2010). If you get the long number beginning '96******' then that will help ensure you get the correct replacement.

Then the ones he has are definitely of no use to me as they are 2008. 😢😢. I haven’t taken mine out yet. However this evening when I get back to the yard, I will do some further investigations.
Thanks Marc

No worries - using the diagram you may be able to get a photo of the label without touching the unit with a bit of luck. Once we have that, it should be a lot easier to get the exact one.

At the end of the day, you really don't want to be messing with all the hassle of replacing these and the bleeding procedure to have to do it all again if it's not right. Best to get the correct one before you start. I just hope it's that and not a connection to one of the wheel sensors that is causing a wobbly.

Also, it's worth noting that the front wiring harness on these can be poor quality. They bundle so many wires in that the thin wiring can crack and break - this can cause intermittent dash lights to come on and off like a Christmas tree.

Let me see if I can dig out the video that highlights this.... worth a look.

Ok, this is the first video he does - showing the wiring.

He then does another video in a bit more detail - he thinks the wires get eaten by battery acid causing shorts and other issues:

I appreciate you've said that you checked the blue power wire to the ABS module at some part - but the power may be getting cut further along the circuit as you mentioned and this would explain any non-communication with a diagnostic tool.
