DW10B To change water pump or not.

Post by EDC5 »

My X7 2.0 hdi is getting it's cambelt changed this coming Thursday.

It's only done 63k miles but the 10 years will be up before long so I've decided to get it done now.

When I booked it in I asked for a full timing kit, water pump and aux belt changed.

Today I received a call from the service manager saying that they don't routinely change the water pumps on these engines, especially at such a low mileage.
He said that they would order the part and let me know mid job if it needed doing.

Should I just insist that it's changed? They want an extra £60 to change it but the way I see it is that I won't be changing the cambelt again so I might as well go all out now and have everything changed.

I should add that this is with an actual Citroen dealer.

Thoughts please, gentlemen.

Any time I change the timing belt I change the water pump.

If it fails it will cost the same price in labour when the timing belt is done.

This is normal practise at main stealers.

I've just done mine and total cost of my kit was £105 including pump, make: Gates.

Cheers :)

Thought as much, ideally I'd be doing this job myself but that's not practical whilst being at uni so the main dealers it is

Do you mean the dealers don't like changing the water pump?

I'll make sure to insist when I take it in on Thursday.

I'd check what that £60 covers, by the look of it that is just the price of the pump. There will be an additional hours labour, and 5 litres of coolant; I'd expect all up not much change out of an additional £150. TBH a dealer is an expensive way to go on a 10 year old car - can you not find an Indy locally; I'd expect them to do the lot for about the same price as the dealer without the pump.

I got a quote from an independent, they said £380. The dealership said that all in it would be £410 for the belt, pump and antifreeze. I will of course agree this before I hand my keys over.

As I say ideally I'd be doing it at home with the help of my dad but failing that this is the only way I can get it done with what I know to be genuine parts.

I changed lots of cambelts in the past without changing the water pump, then the head gasket on my XM went. I replaced the belt but not the pump as usual, about 3k miles later the pump went, so I always do it now.

Fair enough, the car is currently with the dealers now. Water pump will be changed.

I had to ring them and let them know that I wouldn't be taking up their kind offer of a coolant top up for £10 when the water pump would be changed later in the day!
