2002 Citroen C5 Estate clanking sound from rear.

Post by sparkyuiop »

I hope someone can help me with this as the problem is getting worse now and nobody can tell me what is wrong with the damn thing.

You really can't see anything by looking and I'm not a professional mechanic so I don't know what it is I am looking for anyway!

I have been told that it is the anti-rolll bar, drop links and some sort of bearing by different professional mechanics but all while scratching their heads. Even the bloke at Kwik Fit who MOT'd it said he didn't know what it was but to drive it untill it broke. Well to be fair he doesn't know what it is or what will happen if it breaks at 60MPH with my kids in the car so I don't fancy that option!

On a flat road the car drives great and the suspension works fine but as soon as I turn sharply or there is a pot hole the clunk / clank noise it makes is embarrasingly loud.

I uploaded a video to YouTube to see if any of you fine people have had this issue before and may be able to advise me?

Thank you for taking the time to help me.

Without listening to the video, this will almost certainly be the rear trailing arm bearings. A common problem. Fix is to remove the arm and fit new bearings - can take anywhere from 2 hours a side upwards depending on whether it wants to come apart or not....

Sorry I can't help with diagnosis but just wanted to say that was a brilliant video! How did you mount the camera? I'm always concerned of it dropping off and getting damaged when considering external mounting.

p.s. I consider that more a catching clicking sound than clanking. As if a bit of tin is getting caught as the suspension extends and retracts

I recorded it on my GoPro Hero 4 literally by cable tieing it to the heat shield. I have a remote for the GoPro so I didn't have to get under the car to hit the record button.

The noise you hear is automatically lowered by the GoPro to record it with less distortion. In reality it is 20 times louder than that!

What would happen if you just took the sway bar thing off?

The Anti-Roll bar provides additional stability for cornering and reduces body roll - quite an important part as it connects opposite sides of the wheels together. If you didn't have them it would be worse than jelly on a plate.

Indeed! :-D

It's bad enough riding in a car where the front drop links have gone - feeling the car 'give way' under you on cornering is not a nice feeling.

There's no drop links on the rear of a C5, the roll bar is bolted directly to the trailing arms. I have watched the video - can't believe that is anything other than the rear arm bearings; you need to find a Cit indy down there that knows what they are talking about and will be able to change them.

Sod Citroen. I'm not taking it to them, it'll cost more than the car is worth just for them to look at it!
Besides I can do it myself but it seems you can only get these bearings / bushes through Citroen or on eBay. I have phoned several auto parts places here which I know are good and none of them can get those parts from their suppliers.
eBay it is! Thank you for your advise though.

I notice this kit is out of stock but you could make an enquiry, as it is cheaper. http://www.eurocarcare.net/rear-suspens ... r-kit.html
