Citroen C5 - Which gearbox?

Post by Cupi34 »

I have a Citroen C5 2006 2.0 petrol automatic 4 speed. Do I have the 4HP20 gearbox? I have read some topics about people with AL4 gearboxes. What is the difference?

I assume I have the exact same gearbox as a 2003 C5 auto with a 2.0 petrol engine.

One thing that can help here is your VIN. Then somebody with the ability to log into the Citroen systems can read off what your car had fitted when it left the factory.

VF****

If it is the same gearbox oil that is used for both units then this isn't needed checking.

You have the AL4 Gearbox.

The same oil is used in both the AL4 and the 4HP20 (Citroen part reference if you want it: 9730 AE)

Is the system or Lexia supposed to be reset after changing the oil? I don't want to have a warning light in the dash that I can't turn off. I don't have a Lexia. Bad in the MOT test that is soon. So then I of course wonder if I risk having this happen if I do an oil change.

There is a procedure for changing the oil on the AL4 on the C5 and yes the diagnostic tool is used to initialise the used oil counter.

You can only do a partial drain of about 3 litres at a time and the oil must be a minimum of 60 degrees C. There is also a procedure for topping it up and checking - let me know if you need the procedure.

I need a diagnostic tool for my car, to acces all the functions that I need. In this case it is to initialise the used oil counter after filling up with new gearbox oil.

Being new to this, I don't know which product I should go for.

Maybe this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Diagbox-V7-76- ... SwFmxadSjI

But it says it might not work so good for the C5?

Avoid any that say this because they are likely to be missing certain hardware components from the circuit board.

Try and find a revision C full chip kit.

If you don't mind paying a bit over the odds the Lexia clone from Easy Diagnostics is a full chipset unit, and they also provide good after care service. If you mention that you are a member of this forum (with the following code) they will give you a 15% discount.

Thanks for the replies.

I know that the diagnostic tool is used to reset the oil counter (electronic). And if you don't do this then you might have warning lights on the dashboard. And the gearbox paramaters isn't able to change to suit the new oil.

I personally don't believe that the four speed gearbox on a my car is so advanced that it is crucial to the operation of the gearbox. Must be much worse not changing the oil at all. The point of changing the oil is to make the gearbox last longer.

So when you change the oil without using a diagnostic tool will this in any way cause the gearbox not to function (I mean not being able to drive the car afterwards) ?

Please note that the code will only work once the item (s) for purchase have been added to the basket and the SHIPPING / DELIVERY information entered - then apply the code. It must be done in the correct order or the code will not apply - I have updated the thread with this info as some have been having problems.
