Considering buying a C5 X7 2010 Auto 64K on clock.

Post by falling-out-with-my-car »

Hello,

Can anyone help please with some pointers of what to check on a

Citroen C5 X7 Automatic as I am going to view it on Saturday 18th of November.

I have paid a refundable deposit of £500.00 for the Garage to hold the car for me.

They are LMC Citroen A Main dealers.

it is a 2.0l hdi Automatic estate exclusive Having done 64,000 miles. as I know very little about Autos

The vin number is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] if it helps.

I would very much appreciate any advice on this model as in things to check for when viewing please?

My Introduction into C5s with my Manual Mk2 which will be part exchanged if I buy this Car has been very positive

except for my driving abilities complicating things a little. hence the change to an Auto which will be adapted for me.

Could somebody enlighten me as to what it costs to tax please as I shall have to have this done when collecting the car.

I have to watch the figures as I am borrowing some money to cover the cost.

I will change my Monica soon as I have sold my 2cv to help round up some funds to buy an X7.

Many Thanks in advance.

Nigel.

Steering rack. Steering rack. Steering rack. Those would be the first three things I'd want to know about :) A rough idea of the rack pinion condition can be gauged by looking through the driver's side wheel with a torch....... if you know exactly where to look, but for a better idea it needs a look from the driver's footwell, and that needs a bit of trim to be removed. A 5 minute job if you've (they've !!) got tools to hand ! You need to know if the rack's been replaced at all / if the pinion is rusted at all / if any form of warranty they offer will DEFINTELY cover a replacement rack due to failure of the pinion seals due to rust. If they're not prepared to confirm anything then you might want to either getting a proper AA / RAC / independent inspection report of the car, or think again. It's not terminal if the rack goes in your ownership - recon racks can be fitted for around £400 if you find the right garages..... but I suspect you'd rather not have to pay for a replacement rack at all :-D I think Citroen charge well north of £1k to fit a new rack.
The only other thing I'd check for is if the front windows go up and down without too much noise. There have been an awful lot of failures of the window winder mechanism cables. It's not a particluarly costly or difficult job to replace them - but again, I'm assuming you'd rather not do the job at all !

You might also want to consider getting a partial oil change done on the auto box in due course. There's plenty of (recent) info about that on the forum. Citroen will tell you the oil won't need changing. Citroen tell lies  (tongue firmly in cheek)
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

Get it......great cars..

If you can get an extended warranty that cover Steering-Rack, Struts and Pump. Lower front suspension joints are a weak spot but an easy change. Budget for a 3x Gearbox oil change.
Apply lots of thick waterproof (boat grade) grease to the rack pinion seal area)

When did the 160 hp 2.0 HDi come in ? The one Nigel is looking at is a 138 - I thought they were all 160s by mid 2010 ??

I had a C5X7 tourer for a long time, 2.0 163 manual steel sprung, regret selling it but wife has difficulty with getting in and out of low seats and she much prefers the C4 Pic we now have.

Around town, slightly awkward, needs big parking space. Not exactly agile. Out of town simply the best long distance cruiser I have owned. (SAAB 9-5 was close second). 700 mile days with 4 adults and full load, no problem.

Two things went wrong (on top of the usual tyre and brake replacements) in my 50k miles with it (had 20k on when I bought it and 70 when it went): front electric windows - lift wire known to rust. Window fails "closed" so can wait till another day to fix. An awkward but do-able diy job and you can buy the wires for very little (£10 or so), plus the rear high level brake light but I found you can open up the unit and bypass a corrosion-prone terminal with a wire and spot of solder. Took a while but not too challenging.

Plus to my mind they look really good from almost any angle, I never came back to it in a car park thinking "I'd rather have the BMWmercedesAudi parked next to it"

As a fairly recent new owner of a '58' Auto X7, 138ps to be exact (57k miles on the clock when I got it) I'd second the gearbox oil change suggestion as mine was jet black when I changed it.

So far the only mechanical failure was a front suspension strut that I replaced myself, the part was ~£200, probably triple that to have a garage do it.

I haven't got the balls to inspect my steering rack yet :( . With the age of my X7 if its going to leak then it would have done by now I suspect.

How does the gearbox feel when changing gears? any clunks or delays? any rev flaring (sign of worn valve block).

Apart from that as long a the suspension goes up and down well then it should be fine.

Also, inspect the rear suspension pipes, roll bar and sphere block ....the only parts NOT protected by any anti-rust coatings. It is easy to cover it all it wax to protect it. The roll bar powder coating "splinters" as it enters the bush, clean it off, paint and wax it. All easy to do in a hour.

I agree its the best looking tourer out there. If I had the money, i'd go with the top of the range V6, but my 1.6 eHDI will do for now. I was nearly crying when they wrote it off as they are hard to get, especially up here in Scotland. Luckily it was only cosmetic damage and the bodyshop is fixing it, should be ready today.

I noted the LMC dealer name, that's the original supplier of the one I found in a field, I'm going to email them and see if they have some early history for it, what do you think the chances are?

well thanks everyone but family constraints got in the way again but I did manage to get some time away
last Saturday to go have a break from family worries and see some friends I haven't seen for 8 years in Portsmouth,.
I am so impressed with my Mk2 diesel hatch Ive decided to keep her, so sorry to waste your time everyone.

Im pondering now about clutches SMF or DMF as there is very little difference in price £5 more for the DMF.
and I am going to have the gear selection automated electronically, basically the car will be able to be driven manually or using a
semi auto gear change the pedal will travel in and out at the press of a button on the gear lever and I will still need to select the gears.

I did 330 miles last Saturday and it cost me £41.00 to fill up when I got home.

That's not to bad at all. and I was carrying four passengers around Portsmouth in the afternoon and gunning it on the way home
up the A34 at about 75. correct me if Im wrong but I make it about 42 to the gallon at £5.175 per gallon. £1.15 a litre. 7.9 gallons.

regards.
Nigel.
