They probably need completely changing. If they have dual filament bulbs, the bulb holder will be at the wrong angle.

The lenses would also need to be changed, I got away with only changing the lenses on my Xantia, the tester said that the pattern was strange but did not fail them.

On the other hand, if you are lucky you can get French registration without a CT test, as the prefecture should accept a valid MOT instead of a CT (I did not manage that).

Have you got (can you even get?) a certificate of conformity for that vehicle?

Shouldn't be too difficult to get the other headlamp from a French scrappie. They're a doddle to change - once you've sussed out those strange kiltpin clips.

If you've posted this on the Visa forum, one of the French members might offer you one.

Sadly, my experience is that everything to with cars is more expensive in France than in the UK.

The cars themselves are more expensive new and retain a higher price second hand. new spares are way more expensive than in the UK although, to be fair' I don't have the same access to spares as in the UK. And finally second hand spares are two to four times the price you'd expect to pay in the UK.

You may have been the victim of "English prices" when you were there.

Don't think that's going to be the answer for the panels I want, though.

I've done both my cars. The BX in 2005 and the 406 in 2009. First job are headlights, by us in 36 lights are 35 each now. If you go to a 'recup auto' and don't speak decent French take a French mate with you. It's the same as house prices, one price for locals and another for foreigners or Parisiennes. Luckily for me, after being here for 12 years and integrating I'm now a 'local'. I then needed a cert. of conformity for both my French built cars. I think it was about 125 euros. it's a way of grabbing a couple quid. I remember I also had to make a trip to the 'Hotel des Impots' to confirm that I didn't need to pay any import duty. If the car is over a few years old you're OK with that. It's to stop people buying the car in Belgium or Luxembourg. Then you need a CT. Once you've got the paperwork in order, send it to the Prefecture who will issue you with your Carte Grise, for a fee. In France you have to buy this. Which is why people don't change their cars very often. On the up side, there's no road tax, but insurance is more expensive (but it comes with roadside assistance.
On a similar note, if you decide to buy a French registered car, make sure the GR is up to date. I.E. in the name of the current owner, and that the CT is less than 6mths old and is also in the same name. If the CR isn't up to date the purchaser has to pay for the previous owner(s) CR(s) that weren't done which can substantially up the total price of the vehicle. I did the last importation in 2009 and hope that what I've said is still current. If not I'd be interested to hear about the changes.
The reason for the conformity cert is to give the BHP fiscally for insurance reasons. A 100 406 I think is 7 CV. (The reason for the 2CV name) I've never heard of a UK MOT being accepted, the systems are quite different.
It seems like a lot of work but as long as the car isn't a Jap import is quite straight forward.
Best of luck
Pete
Notice the BX is still top the list but sadly gone
