Citroen C5 2.0HDI 5th Gear Jumps Out

Post by howardaskew »

The car has covered 180,000 miles. It is a C5 2.0HDI VTR RHZ.
It developed a jump out of 5th gear that got worse.
I have finally tried to repair.
I removed end plate and all looks OK.

I checked cable by disconnecting and trying to shorten gear selector cable length.

Not sure I was able to do it.

Subsequent test ride and although I can select 5th gear it does not stay in and its fair to say that this gear is "crunchy"

Now what do I do?

1) Replace cable? (then find out I should have replaced gearbox?)
2) replace gearbox? (Then find out I should have replaced cable?)
3) Just drive car with 1-4 gears?

The car has a fault with the Air Con and Fan but I have had a new cambelt and gearbox within the last 30,000 miles.
I prefer cars to have 5 gears before attempting to complete all repairs.
Engine drives nicely.

Often caused by the locking nut on the shaft coming loose and unwinding but at the mileage could be just well worn gear/hub.
If all the other gears are ok and the shaft nut isn't loose you might get away with replacing the fifth gear and synchro hub instead of the whole box.
Check first that the outer cable hasn't come un-crimped at one end.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

A good few 5-speed transverse boxes suffer 5th gear issues - vibration, poor engagement, jumping out - because the 5th gear cluster "hangs" on the outboard end of the shaft, and, unlike the other gears, is unsupported on both sides. Replacing the 5th gear parts often sorts it, and can often be done by simply removing the box end cover - no need for engine or box out. Has afflicted both ZF and Toyota.

Thanks for suggestions.

Which parts do I replace? Do I buy a second hand box around £100 or buy new parts?

Apologies this car is no more. Unfortunately I made a mistake on Sunday 21st January on the A26 at night when raining. I thought the road went straight on but I was wrong. Only doing 40-50 mph but I hit a tree hard. So I won't be repairing the gearbox!

It proves the safety of the C5 in a heavy collision. I had broken ribs but all the doors opened and all the injuries were seatbelt or airbag related. Please make sure you use your seatbelt!

Broken ribs? Glad you were ok, that looked like a hell of an impact! I'm curious as to how your ribs got broken, though I'm assuming it was the seat belt pre-tensioners pulling you back, against the sudden lunging forward resulting from stopping through force of the impact?

I've only ever had an air bag go off on me once - from a brand new Renault Clio - a loan car whilst my XM was being repaired! A lady of some later years pulled out onto the main road from a hidden entrance without stopping and sliced me side on.

I was deafened by the airbag and lost the skin off my nose, and at the time had my hand on the gearstick as it was a steep hill - so that caved my wrist in - but recovered ok after a few months! I must say those airbags are deafening and my hearing was shot for a good few hours after and I suspect a contributory cause of tinnitus! The smoke is acrid too. I never allow any loose things lying about on seats or the floor or the dash for this reason as objects can soon become lethal projectiles in such an incident.

Absolutely well done on getting out of that one and great to see that despite the injuries, you were kept safe!

Marc,
I was a bit disorientated as the car was full of smoke. Regarding projectiles I had a boot full of tools and equipment including some 1 litre tins of paint that did not need to be in the car. Thankfully only the paint came out and covered the interior. But it makes me think about carrying even a tin of beans in the boot. Some plastic toolboxes were destroyed.

I think the airbag and the seatbelt gave me my injuries. My right thigh was badly bruised at the top and even my John Thomas was bruised in the collision! I had a CT scan and an ECG and they stitched up a small hole in my forearm and kicked me out at 01.48.

The car electrics were disconnected in the collision and consequently people just drove past me until a RAC patrol stopped when I was waving my hand out of the open passenger door.

I think the consensus was that I was very lucky.

Thank you for your kind thoughts.

Fascinating account Howard. I still can't get over those impact pictures and it is hard to see that it is a C5 from the pics!

Sounds like you went through the wars on that one, but again, very pleased to hear you (and JT) are on the mend!
