Well, my C5 has (for some time now) been dropping me an obvious hint that the starter motor was getting tired. It never failed to start, it just took some time. Eventually I got said hint, and now she has a Bosch refurbished starter motor (from GSF, £118.80 paid, but £54 returned when I took in the old one). The new motor spins so fast I half expected the car to turn over, not just the engine. Took me about 1.5 hours, but not bad.

I am going to take a second go at a bit. The old motor used a ring connector for the solenoid, while the new one has a spade connector. I made up a wire suitable for the connections, but it looks slightly thinner than the loom wire. I will make a thicker one, but it will be fun fitting it.

The headlights now look a LOT better, as BenC5HDi had a polishing kit (which he had already used on "The Flying Tomato"). The offside indicator area is not great (but that is NOT due to Ben, but what looks like fizzing in the plastic), but it is scary as to how much more light they emit!

It was a Mitsubushi. It now is a factory refurbished Bosch, 1.7KW unit. She seems to like it, and it did fit into place (although it is slightly longer than the original motor).

OK, well, I have fitted the Cruise Control stalk to my C5, and got it enabled in the Injection section, but I cannot get it to work. Using the Lexia to watch it in the Driver Switch section, I can see that the On/Off switch works, but nothing happens on the others. Can anybody let me know what I have missed or done wrong? Thanks.

Can anybody let me know what I have missed (or if Diagbox v7.15 has an important function missing, that stops me from completing the job)?

Under Lexia - there is an option under Vehicle Definition - Equipment - Driving Information, that has 'Vehicle Speed Regulation Present and Type' and the also the 'Reference Tolerance - vehicle speed limitation / regulation (km/h)' - which must be set to 3 - which is the allowed variation between the set speed and the actual. There's also another option 'Engine Management ECU response time to the BSI when the cruise control is switched on (sec) which is set to 0.6 on my X7. This is from a printout I had at the garage that was using 'Lexia' not Diagbox as the interface - so the wording may be different - but at least you can see there are at least 3 places that information needs to be entered James.

Some of the wording may be differ between the Lexia versions / but will be similar.

OK, well, I have made some progress.

First, as the CC stalk is fitted to a wide range of COM2000 units (each with differing mouldings and contact positioning), the CC stalk may require a spacer to line these up. When I got the stalk off a scrap C5 it had this spacer fitted, and I though nothing of it. I did notice (but did not think as to why) that it seemed a bit loose when I popped it into my C5. It turns out that the mouldings on her COM2000 are different, and so, with the spacer fitted, it was not latching into place, and the contacts were not all lining up. I removed the spacer (it just clips into place), and now that stalk would latch.

Unfortunately that is not the end of the saga. Using the Lexia I could see that the on/off switch action was being detected, but only occasionally was the ref+ and ref- being detected, and the other button was not being picked up at all. I have now got a replacement stalk from the scrapyard, and this also had the spacer fitted. Removed it, fitted the stalk, and now all functions are picked up straight away.

However, I do not yet know if that is all I need to do. According to my Lexia, in order to activate Cruise Control all I need to do is to fit said stalk, and then tell the C5 it is present. Well, we shall see what happens next time I take her out.

Marc, I did look for the settings you described, but I could not find them anywhere. As your C5 is much more current than mine, is it possible that yours has more information to be input before it will accept the Cruise Control is available? Failing that, could it be my Lexia software (version 7.15) is doing the complete configuration when it activates the CC stalk?

Reading elsewhere, it may be that Cruise Control has a minimum speed before it will be 'available' so I need to do a quick motorway run, and see if it happens then.

Hi James - seems you are making good progress! The document I referred to was indeed for an X7 BSI, so may well be configured differently on an earlier model / BSI. In fact, having done a bit more research tonight - it could well be that you just need to activate it once on yours. But - have you also fitted the secondary switch for the brake pedal ( to go open circuit when brake pedal is pressed to disengage)? Here's a link to the article for another chap who fitted his OK an an earlier C5 that shows this - however, his was quite a high spec C5 and he had the wiring in place to connect the switch - another couldn't get it configured, but it may help....

Hope it helps

Thanks Marc. My C5 has the later switch already fitted (4 wires), and in a section on the Lexia it did see a secondary brake switch.

OK - well worth a shot - incidentally, the cruise will not kick in under 30 MPH as a rule and also needs to be in 4th, 5th or 6th gear to work.

On the C3, I've also noticed that as well as making sure the barrel switch is changed from speed limiter to cruise function, it won't engage whilst driving if I switch the cruise on and then try setting the speed. It seems I have got to enable this before driving off and have my foot on the brake at least once.... If I do this then it seems to work fine whilst driving. Maybe this was because I switch it off (barrel switch to the middle position) as my mother 'doesn't do technology', so I make sure she doesn't activate it accidentally and wonder what the hell's going on! :-D

OK, so I need to be at speed, and in a cruising gear for Cruise Control to become available. I will need to look through the handbook to see how to engage it.

Press the upper button at the back to engage it. Then you can use that button and the lower one to vary the speed while it's active. The end button cancels and resumes the last speed you set.

Well, my C5 now has a new trick up her sleeve. The Cruise Control is working! I can now confirm that fitting Cruise Control to a C5 Mk1 is very easy.
