Fitting electrics with Towbar (Xsara Picasso 2004)

Post by rmunns »

I am buying a towbar for my August 2004 Xsara Picasso Exclusive and am unsure about what I need to do regarding the electrics.

I have read that I might need a special fitting in order to cope with multiplex wiring. Can anyone please confirm? I have seen that it's needed for post 2003 cars, but on another website it says post 2005. If it's any help, my VIN number is *********39773222.

service.citroen says:

MULTIPLEXING: MULTIPLEXING ASSEMBLY CAN VAN

Check the ends of the indicator / wiper stalks - if they are smoth with rounded egg shaped dome ends, then it is fully multiplexed (it should be, as service.citroen shows a COM2000 unit for it).

There is much misinformation regarding Citroen electrics. There is no complication in the wiring of the lights on these vehicles. Even though the switch may be multiplexed the feeds to the individual lamps are straight forward 12V on 12V off switched by good old fashioned electromechanical relays. The vehicles likely to cause complications use systems such as dual voltage LED tail/brake lamps, bulb failure warning systems etc. However on ALLvehicles it is a very good idea to use a bypass relay available from most auto factors. These make the towbar wiring invisible to the BSI, GEM, body computer or whatever your favourite vehicle manufacturer calls their BSI. Using the bypass relay ensures that trailer wiring faults will not knock out the vehicle lights by blowing a fuse, making the indicators act as hazzard flashers or whatever. Power is best supplied by a fused line straight from the battery. The following link is just to give an example of what you want

Hi there BX I know this reply is pretty old now. I have an xsara picasso 05 ,obviously multiplex. I am going to use a by pass relay. But I am still a little confused. Ok, I connect the 7 pin wires to the by pass relay. That part is easy, Now I have 8 coloured wires on the left side and 6 colours on the right.
I can give you the colours if it helps. So Even if I work out which colours do which. Do I still need to connnect over to the right side. So does this mean if the red cable on the left side is brake light, Then I have to connect the red wire on the relay to that wire, and do I also have to run a third wire from the red over to the other side, So 3 red connected , see what I mean. Marc in Admin just sent me a big Diagram from wiki , I have no clue how to understand that diagram what so ever. Complicated as s**t. I know about running a 15 amp fuse from the battery to power the relay. Appreciate if you can help me understand this simply. Regards Kevin

HI DISCV,
I can not access the link , because I have tried to register with that Damn Citroen Picasso club for over a week. It is like a ghost site. Tried email admin, no reply after days tried to get in and join for over a week now. That guide is exactly what I was trying to look at. Is there any other way, you could get me to see it. ??? I would put my email on here but they will say not allowed.

Their Captcha is pretty defunct and they probably haven't updated their software - it's a known bug that they probably are not even aware of. It won't accept any answer, so I wouldn't bother with it at present.
