Ah, OK... On the C5 the ram is bolted into the subframe. Not sure you can remove it with the sphere attached - not enough room to get the bolts out maybe. It may well be possible to replace the gaiter with the ram in situ if you have manged to free the ram from the arm (lucky bugger!) - and since you have the pin out, there is no need to remove the arm. I would go along with repairing the pipe, and then trying to get the sphere off - you just need a bigger lever and / or a bigger hammer

So the only thing left that I'm not clear on is the seals themselves I used to have a diagram which showed me where they went but I seem to have misplaced it while waiting for the gaitor to fail completely.
This is all very useful information I am very grateful to all who have contributed.

Oh and to add, I have just managed to replace gaitor while ram is in situ, it was difficult but all I had to do was unbolt the antiroll bar to allow the arm to move freely which allowed enough room to maneuver the gaitor around the end of the ram.

As a hopefully last post on this thread. I've just changed a leaking cylinder seal/edge for a dowty one, in situ, in about 2 hours, rather than the 2 weeks it took me in this thread.. instructions on the "Dowty seals work" thread viewtopic.php?f=3&t=46231&start=15#p570522
