Up date on my Relay / Jumper van, changed starter charged battery 36 hours started it a few times then took it fo a short run and started again all OK out in bitter cold temps for 3 days tried it ....... started on the button, took it for just over an hours trip loaded up van and it started on the button so hopefully case solved.

I had replacement starter leads etc made for mine and a friend's V6 XM a few years ago. Took my failing one to a local auto electrician and the next day I picked up new leads. I think the well used term "bespoke" could be applied here. They fitted perfectly and as an added bonus the starter turned with more grunt and other niggly electrical problems went away - no doubt as various systems were not being degraded by lack of supply.

Problem here in Blighty Craig, is that specialist Auto Sparks who could and might do such a job are rarer than honest politicians... :(

Generally speaking if it doesn't arrive in a box all nicely ready-made we're lost in this land. We as a country have lost our initiative and ability to fabricate all sorts of things sadly...

Sadly it's getting that way here, but they can still be found if you look.

I've always used Rees & Alan Aylesbury ( 01296 483586 ) for Auto sparks, they do custom anything you want @ fair price.

I go there sometimes just for a chat and see what exotic motors they have in for work at the time.

Wouldn't consider going anywhere else or online for Alternator, starter recon, they do it using Original parts only!!

Simon even offered to do my Xantia heater matrix for £400 reckons it's a doddle :-D

I doscovered I had a very hot positive cable on my Expert when cranking back in october when I had a starting problem: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... =4&t=41729" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I couldn't find anyone that would make up a Y-cable like the original and peugeot/citroen wanted £43 which seemed a bit steep so I used a nice fat spare out of one of my boxes of 'useful items'. The van is 15 years old.

What you can do for leads is take a piece of string down to where it ends ie starter? then follow back to battery lok at the route to see if you can improve it so less flexing plus add a bit as OEM's are never known for being generous with wires (Frauds are one of the worse our lorry had it where you needed say 3 meters to run correctly so bean counters had it made 2.9 or less to save pennies but cost them with recalls as chaffed on chassis)
For cables have a look at one for welders they can also come in (Red) but the strands are finer. also look at the square which is how cable is sized it's the inner cable not across outer.
All you need is someone with large crimpers(there is a way you can do in a vice with a jaw piece for it)but as been said we don't make much anymore so could be hard to find that jaw block?.they also use for crimping multistrand cables winch/gym equipment.
You can tidy them up with the plumbers kit ie torch and pipe solder(try to get non lead free)
Lead free solder migrates across components (grows whiskers)hence many of the electrical component failure these day's but it's kept quite from all.
It's hard finding the good terminals these days one good thing found on fords when had flat terminals was that they had a plate that bolted to positive terminal then all your secondary cables bolted to that so main ones had good contact.

If anyone needs bits give me a shout and i'l have a look for you plus have a good auto leccy shop near by that does many parts inc trucks.
One lead end i did do was to find a crimp that looked like a tube with a flared end slid over end of cable then crimped that then slid into clamp then it bolted down with 2 bolts so was nice and secure.
Got myself a multi meter of fleabay while back that one can find a live without contact and two comes with a wire/probe that gives you the temperature of anything that you touch with probe very handy esp when testing pc parts.

May I just mention that there was a bit on the radio a couple of weeks back that local councils are to be allowing traffic wardens to use their own decression when awarding tickets to drivers who park to far from the kerb if you have an auto park vechicle like the ford Focus and it parks to far azway from the kerb it could cost you more in fines in the long term if the vechicle doesnt get close enough to the kerb. and they were talking about a mere 6 inches distance, apparently they are to be clamping down on people who park two wheels on the pavements as well. This was on radio 4 so I assume it was a national thing not local.

Hi just replaced my Negative terminal as the lead one was a bit flaffing around with square end of bolt chopped it off/split it open wire outer was brittle there but what ive done now is the nickel/brass hole was quite large for wires but slid a piece of 16mm copper pipe over wires then pushed into hole then screwed the two fixing screws hard down onto tube so crimped by it. any one like a picture?

Saw that on the Beebs website. They should make a fortune if what we see on this site is any indication. YPLAC!

That website is quite amusing if you imagine it being read out by Derek and Clive.

Amusing but surely no need to use those rude words as frequently as he/she/it does. It's all a bit juvenile really. Thing is that you can see equally inconsiderate parking anywhere you care to look. It would appear to be the norm sadly.
