Go Faster Exhausts

Post by sooty »

On my way home this evening from work, I pulled up behind a pug 306td with my ZX td and I noticed it had a Twin Big Bore exhaust. I thought that looks nice and it must sound nice.
The pug pulled away and I thought, had I gone deaf. The sound was Naff, no bloody difference to a Std. exhaust. I thought that was a complete waste of money and effort, where he was no quicker than me.
Are there such exhausts for (ZX)diesels (or any other Citroen), to make them sound sporty like the Petrol heads.

I could be very wrong here, but I'm sure the sporty note of a petrol has a lot to do with the way the car is fuelled. The petrol car has the ability to overfuel on demand by simply increasing the throttle, this can lead to an increase in unburnt fuel which ignites in the exhaust manifold giving greater resonance/sound. With the addition of a sporty exhaust back box that sound can be less muffled, hence the pleasing BARP!! A diesel on the other hand has no throttle, and yes you can put your foot to the floor and it will accelerate faster but it won't overfuel in the same way, and diesel doesn't readilly ignite in the exhaust like a petrol would, you just get more smoke. You may get better performance by fitting a sporty back box, but not the increased tail note. It will just look nice. Like I said, I may be way off the mark. I'm open to being corrected

When I was a kid we used to strap bits of carboard on the forks to hit on the spokes so it sounded like a motor bike -
Maybe that'll work

Since I removed the intermediate box from my XM TD12, the exhaust note has just assumed a slightly louder "WHOOSH" level, however, the turbo spins up much faster and the sound level inside the car is unchanged. So, I believe Gareth is on the right track, though if you get close to some of these overpowered trucks, their exhaust note is definitley a "bark" (could be due to the V-8 cylinder formation?)

I agree with what Gareth has said as I had an old Nova 1.5 TD that had a complete sports exhaust system. The note the exhaust made was only slightly louder and deeper than standard. The biggest difference was that because of the larger diameter pipe throughout the amount of crap that came out the back every time it was started from cold was enough to form its own hole in the oxone layer!!!!!
