C4 Grand Picasso problems?

Post by sparksie »

Hi all
Given my good experience with my Xantia, I'm in the right frame of mind to rescue another Citroen.
This one is a C4 Grand Picasso, with the 1.6HDI, from 2009.
I've never seen one in the flesh, much less worked on one, so I'd be interested in your opinions/experiences.
The one I'm considering has a seized engine, so I'm not hugely bothered about the well documented turbo issues.
Are there any other known pitfalls to watch out for?
What should I look for as a donor vehicle, to supply the replacement engine?
This one's an automatic, but I don't know whether thats a conventional auto, with torque converter and three/four gears, or an automated mechanical box. Also don't know how the engine died, nor under what conditions. Taking worst case scenario, what harm might have befallen the transmission when the engine locked up?
Cheers, all

If it's the EGS Controlled manual, give it a wide berth, they can be a sod to fix - if you don't have the VIN, let me know the reg number and I'll be able to confirm what transmission it has.

As Marc said, if it is the EGS gearbox walk away from it. Daviemck2006 had a C2 with one, the gearbox stopped working, it cost him around £1,000 to get it fixed, and (because he lost faith with the car) he then sold it on. About a year later he saw the same car up for sale as "spares or repairs".

It'll be EGS if it's a 1.6 of that age. Leave well alone.

EGS or the so called 'improved' EGS6 version are the same type - both simulate driving a manual, but the actuators / clutch mechanism are notoriously bad and ultimately cost big time to fix and are complex to work on. Stick to a manual if you can. The newer versions have fully auto EAT gearboxes.

Hi Marc, hi all.
VIN is not something I can reasonably ask the vendor for and the reg will be an Irish one, which won't work on your system.
I may be able to access an Irish spec TecDoc, which should give me the VIN, but given the other responses, is there any point?
If it was a decade older, I'd consider a full transaxle swap, for a 2.0 manual, but not nowadays. I'd need a complete car to take everything from and, if I had that, why would I bother with this?
Oh well.
Maybe someone else will take it on...
Cheers, guys
