Exhaust parts

Post by Stonehopper »

The centre, long pipe, on my '75 GS Pallas has a torpedo type section made up of a folded seam. I suspect it acts as a resonator, or sound absorption device. Well the seam has given out, roaring like a good'un. 8-)
I opted for a straight pipe without the intermediate silencer to replace same, but shipping restrictions from Germany to UK meant that it was cut into two for the passage. It's back together now, but the end of the old pipe is well and truly stuck in the female joint on the back box. I cut it off, leaving enough pipe to get some grip on, but heat, and various fluids faile to shift it. So, off with the end silencer, and I'm glad I did as it was thin as tissue at the blind end. This has brought on a search to replace without giving resources a heart attack.

The high end for the back box is £122, with shipping from Germany a fair lump of it.
The low end seems to be distributed from Coventry, but sourced in Lyon, France, and at £45 discounted from £53, is it a no brainer?
Well, the page states Out of Stock, but the same seller has them listed on Ebay for £81, with shipping to the UK for £8.50.

If you are in France, there is a supplier through yakarouler.com who can offer two manufacturers silencers; Veneporte, or IMASAF, one around half the price of the other! But they do not ship to the UK.

I have yet to place an order, awaiting a reply from Mister Auto, seemingly, but not exclusively, in Coventry.

After some bumping of message, Mr. Auto states his end silencer does not fit the GS - according to 'his' data, though they appear the same (generic images are misleading). The Walker parts catalogue show the GSA as (their numbering) 01155. That silencer is for the GSA from June 1980 - July 1986.
The GS Walker number is 01132 from August 1972, right through to 1980 for all engine sizes, but with an anomaly of a 1.1 engine(? Could be the 1,129cc, but the dates don't match) from June 1980 - December 1983.

I'm wondering if there is any difference at all, and that parts numbering has changed over the years in some stock recording - or - for some reason pipe diameters were changed. The latter hardly seems practical from a manufacturing point of view, but will see if Walker can supply more information.

You will have to pop the relative Walker numbers in the box for "Walker No."

Just an update.
Having been 'put off' from ordering from 'Mr. Auto' (parts allegedly slow in arriving, and any refunds likewise), I ordered from Chevronics. The only difference between the GS and the GSA rear box is the final bends in the tail pipe. GSA and GS are the same other than that, and will fit. No difference in pipe diameters. Walkers only response was that my online email reached their depot in the States (USA) and that they could not help with European supplies.
