The brakes make pretty loud squealing noise most of the time - any pointers?

Re: squealing brakes
Remove and clean pads and discs. Might be worth putting a small chamfer on the leading edges of the pad material though there are some nay-sayers over that. Likewise with a light smear of copper-slip on the backs of the pads.

Re: squealing brakes
Thanks guys - I might have to annoy myself and other road users a bit longer as the garage space is currently occupied with a Nissan. With its interior and wiring being stripped, it might be a while...

Re: squealing brakes
Some older cars tend to squeal with the harder pad materials in use since asbestos was banned, newer designs have adapted to modern pads.
I don't recommend putting copper grease anywhere near the pads, as it melts and runs when the brakes get hot, potentially causing much more serious issues.
Check that any springs or shims that a supposed to be fitted around or behind the pads are actually fitted and in good condition.

Chamfering the leading edge of the shoe was always the way we did it in the olden days - assuming it has shoes, don't know what you do about discs, never had a problem.

R32 Skyline - not a GTR though. It certainly is "interesting" and fun, at least in my opinion - I'll try to find a photo.
Going back on topic, is there a consensus for the best quality brake pads for GSA? Should I look for NOS on leboncoin?

Textar pads were thought to be the best quaility, though they are hard to find now at sensible prices.

Re: squealing brakes
The thick Comma 'Copper Ease' grease* I use has a melting point of 1350degC. I have used it for years, and never seen it end up anywhere other than on the backs and edges of the pads where it was initially applied.xantia_v6 wrote:I don't recommend putting copper grease anywhere near the pads, as it melts and runs when the brakes get hot, potentially causing much more serious issues..
Right to check that all the anti-squeal shims are present (often lost) and in the correct position. Worth copper-greasing both sides of each of these too. The grease acoustically links the relatively lightweight pads to the heavier caliper, so deterring high-frequency vibration (squealing).
* Not to be confused with the much thinner "anti-seize" copper grease thread lubricant sold in tubes.

There are of course a good many products on the market specifically made for the purpose by Bosch, ATE etc.
