NOTE the change of day to SATURDAY 19th SEPTEMBER

19th September – Wingrove Motors Dealer Meet, Newcastle upon Tyne

We have agreed to Wingrove’s request to change the day of our event to Saturday as Sunday is the Whitley Bay Classic Car Show at which they have a large presence. They didn’t want to short change us by not being able to do everything they had intended so we were very happy to agree. Wingrove has apparently always been a keen supporter of local car shows and family events for many years and as the Whitley Bay Classic Show is only in its 2nd year back after a long absence it’s understandable they want to attend.

In terms of what’s in store for us, there will be a range of cars available for Members to test drive with sales staff on hand to answer any questions (and of course sell you a car!), workshop technicians and a ramp available for a bit of poking around if you’re brave enough plus refreshments when you need a bit of break and a chat. The DS 60th Anniversary models will also be on show. Wingrove are going to invite some of their older customers along as well so are keen for us to have as many of the older, more classic models attending as possible. If you intend to come along and have an older car, can you let me know a week or so in advance (contact details at the back of Citroenian) to enable me to advise the garage.

This is a special year for Wingrove Motors as they are celebrating 90 years in the motor trade, almost 50 years of which have been as a Citroen dealer. They have always been at the forefront of motoring in the North East, initially as general repairers and motorcycle specialists before moving over to cars. Virtually from the outset, motor sport has been a huge part of the owners, the Dalkin family’s, life. Motorcycle and motocross racing in the first instance before changing to cars in 1954 and an entry into the Monte Carlo Rally the following year. This motorsport passion eventually spawned a specialist tuning division in the early 1960s, Perdal Performance Centre that gained an international reputation for the quality of its work.

After a short spell as Standard Triumph agents, they changed to Citroen agents for the North East area and immediately began using Double Chevrons in their motorsport activities to great effect. Several years of competing in the RAC Rally, first in a DS and then a GS through the 1970s, 2CV Cross throughout the UK and Europe and from the 1980s autocross, rally cross and grass track in various Visa, LN and Saxos. The company even entered a car in the 2nd Paris – Dakar Rally in the early ‘80s.

Everything I’ve heard about Wingrove, comments made to me by Members and certainly my own experience in setting up the event suggests we are going to have a great day with a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable company.

We will be visiting their Wingrove Newcastle East outlet in Wallsend, on a purpose built retail park with a number of other car retailers, between 12.00noon and 5.00pm. The address is Kittywake Close, Silverlink Retail Park, Wallsand, Tyne & Wear, NE28 9ND.

Directions: from the A1 south of Newcastle take the A194(M) Tyne Tunnel, join the A19 through the tunnel to the junction with the A1058; take the 3rd exit on to the Silverlink Retail Park; at the 3rd roundabout take the 3rd exit and follow the road round where the garage is on the left.

From the A19 north, take 1st exit at the roundabout with A1058 then as above on Retail Park.

From Newcastle City Centre, take the A1058 to A19 junction; take 2nd exit onto Retail Park and then as above.

One thing to be aware of is that Newcastle United are playing Watford at home that day so there will be a lot traffic about in the area generally and on the A1, particularly at the end of the day.

With the Whitley Bay Classic Car Show being the following day there is the opportunity for those from further afield to stay over and sample Newcastle’s famous nightlife. You won’t be disappointed!!!
