CO2 Nonsense
So what's with all this CO2 malarky then?
Can't believe the country is being held to ransom by CO2 factories all deciding they are going to undertake maintenance at the same time! Well done the management on that score
So out shopping yesterday and no fizzy water, no lemonade, no flipping meat (and who would of thought they put C02 in your Sunday roast anyway?), no cake and no bloody crumpets!
Well that's me stuffed as I won't drink tapwater, so will likely be overdosing on vitamin C now as I consume vast quantities of OJ.

I think it's a good-thing™
The food industry take the pee gassing food so they can maximise profits through so-called extended shelf-life. We should be eating fresh local produce, not old crap that's been transported half-way round the world.
And what's wrong with tap water?

Re: CO2 Nonsense
I didn’t know it was even put in all this type of food to be honest.
I haven’t drank tap water for the last 20 years (apart from boiled in coffee), I’ve seen some real nasty stuff come out from the taps over the years, globules of black oil and they are always doing something round here so that we often have brown muck coming out the taps when they’re at it. I just stick to bottled water and be done with it.

Re: CO2 Nonsense
The reason they use CO2 in fizzy drinks is that it dissolves well into the liquid, and comes out slowly. If you were to use nitrogen it is released very quickly from the liquids. To see how quickly it can occur try dropping a strong mint into a bottle of cola (and stand well back as you do so!; you HAVE been warned!).
CO2 is also used as a preservative. As (for example) Warburton pack their products the packaging is filled with CO2. This can add appreciably to the shelf life.

Re: CO2 Nonsense
Our village pub has its beer in barrels on a rack, with just taps and gravity involved in serving - no CO2 needed
A little google research tells me that the average person exhales about 1Kg CO2 a day, a very active person can be 8x that figure. That should be plenty to carbonate a few fizzy drinks and preserve a few crumpets: all I have to do now is collect it and work out a way to separate it from the Nitrogen and Oxygen in the mix...... back soon (or not) .....

Re: CO2 Nonsense
I believe that some of the plants producing CO2 are doing so as a waste product. The main products (according to what I have heard) of these plants are crop fertilizers. As the demand for fertilizers drop around this time of year it makes sense for the plants to close down for maintenance (although this time a few plants have had 'unexpected' equipment failures).

Is that likely to be Real Ale in your pub then Richard? In the 80s we had Young’s Real Ale from their Wandsworth brewery and that was hand pulled in the club, but was flat as a witches t*t. Give me a pint of Guinness any day

Re: CO2 Nonsense
Yes, had the water company out several times where I used to work and they ended up giving us 5 litre plastic water containers for a month - they couldn't find the cause and put it down to the pipes! Same thing happened again several times - but we left there. We're always getting asked by various utility / water vans where the pumping station and the treatment plant is round here - even by the water company vehicles! We're used to having to boil water though from living abroad so no loss there. I just avoid tap water if I can. Visions of 'Erin Brokovich' no doubt!

Re: CO2 Nonsense
You'd think so, but I was listening to some environmentalist group's spokesman on Radio 4 yesterday, and it's actually better for the environment to eat many things (mainly fruit and veg) that are produced abroad than growing the same things here, providing they are transported by road/rail/sea and not by air. This is simply because those things grow naturally outdoors in hotter climes, but here they require polytunnels/greenhouses/heating/light.. which, according to studies, use more energy and resources than simply letting the things grow naturally abroad and sticking them on a truck. If it was Mr. Asda or Mr. Sainsbury saying it, I'd not have believed it, but it was an environmentalist bloke.

Where did you live where that was necessary Marc? I think I've drank tap water in just about every country I've been too and never suffered any ill effects over the years. That includes Hong Kong, China and Sri Lanka more than 35 years ago when hygiene "wasn't the best"..

Well, I don't drink alcohol, I don't drink anything fizzy, I'm no fan of crumpets... and ... I can simply catch my own dinner as per this pic taken yesterday...
