I thought there was a load of tat for a lot of money and I expect there will be quite few disappointed buyers wanting to pass their buys on in the next few months when they get down to the nitty gritty of what they bought.

There were six I was interested in, three seriously, and one I was having no matter what. I still don't know why I didn't bid on the two Corsair's although the Maestro Turbo was seriously over-priced but the brown Princess was mine all along. A grand if I was lucky, £1500 would be about right, £1800 would be pushing it - but £2200 is just plain daft. Add on commission and transport and we're at £2.5k before even starting to look at what really needs doing. Especially when I know a similar car is for sale by an Owners Club Member with all the documents, history and detailed work, in excellent condition for £3k!

The Corsair was I think one of Fords better models, I used one for a few months (a part exchange), the early one with the straight engine was good, the later V4 was a bit troublesome because they hadn't got the cooling system right and they tended to boil a lot. :(

Not sure I'd ever want a Princess other than a VandenPlas 3 Litre. or maybe a VP1300.

OMG, isn't that fabulous!

...but while there are some lovely prototypes in the British Motor Museum that P6 Estate is not one of them, doesn't it look ridiculous, they've got the end height of the roofline all wrong.

Out of interest, now that the hammer prices have been filled in, I copied the data into a spreadsheet.

The total taken in is £468,690.

Brightwell's add a 10% buyer's premium so they will have taken £46,869 that way. JLR will no doubt have negotiated a special seller's premium but let's assume that's also 10% so they will have trousered £93,738 from the sale.

You also had to buy a catalogue at £20 in order to bid. There were 298 lots so, assuming two people on average, that's another £11,920 making a total of £105,658. I'm sure there were considerable costs involved but it's an interesting insight I think.

Well done Eddie, nearly well done John, and could do better me :-D

Still you need a couple of false starts and you need to get a feel for the auctions before taking the plunge :-D

I know if I have beeen prepared, finances sorted out and limit in my head, that I would have been caught up in the bidding on the caravelle, and although it went for a price in the range I would consider to be acceptable before the sale, I reckon it would have gone higher, and I would have gone higher and either missed it as it went out of my range, or probably more likely ended up paying 20% more than I would have wanted to pay.

Bidding on-line at home wouldn't have carried that additional pressure of "i've travelled all this way, and need to come away with what I came for".

I know people do it on e-bay all the time spending £1000's on the basis of pictures and descriptions without actually viewing the items, but my biggest mistake was not organising the time off to actually go to the auction and view the car.

Wow things look like they've gone for a fair bit of money there...

Going on the photo's, I guess the s2 CX probably went for less because it isn't a runner at the moment, whereas the S1 is???
Plus, S1 Safari's/Familliale's are mega rare in comparison.

Neil, it's not the ones you miss that you have to worry about it's the ones you buy. There will be another one along soon.....maybe.

Sorry if you're under the assumption that I bought but I refused to pay the price of the one I really wanted.

I'm still a bit cheesed off with the Corsair's but the green Maestro Turbo looks like it could be a good one to miss. Been talking to a couple of guys who are big into Maestro's and Montego's and they have said the car needed a full restoration. It looked good on the outside but hid it's problems well. And no-one knows who bought it!

I should have made my final (?) post on this earlier but better late than never.

Brightwells have brought their web site up to date with the results of the auction. They say "With over 2,000 in attendance, 7,500 watching and bidding online, and over 75,000 individual views of the catalogue in the six weeks building up to the sale", so...

With 2000 odd there that would make a conservative estimate of £40,000 for the catalogues raked in. There were numerous bundles of unsold catalogues by the entrance as we left (I did consider asking for a pack but I felt disapproval on my elbow) so I would guess they had about 5000 printed.

Buying at the right price and selling on at a profit.

This was bought at the Brightwells Auction and turned around rapidly on E-bay

£1,100 Hammer Price at the Auction

1964 Austin J2 Paralanian Camper

Another one on e-bay for resale £1,500 Hammer Price

1980 AUSTIN ALLEGRO 3. 1.3HL. ONE LADY OWNER FOR 31 YEARS. ONLY 46K MILES

My Caravelle is up for sale too! and looks like the same person bought the Citroen Visa as well

The Allegro hasn't sold yet - that's an asking price. It'll be interesting to see how long it's left up for sale.

Because they were rotting as they rolled off the production line so good solid ones that have survived make good money. Most are within the various BL Owners' Club's or at least known to them.

..and if you mate an Allegro Estate with a Grand Vitara you do get a classic SUV (sort of! :-D ) at a touch under £4K.

Far too interesting/pretty to go in the I-Spy an Ugly SUV thread though!
