Posted that up yesterday so it was on 9.00 Monday on the 'normal' TV.

Its on the i-player now http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... family-car

They did go on about the Allegro predictably, and how it could have been so much better with a hatchback. Got me thinking and I have to admit I dont know for sure without looking it up.....did the Maxi have a hatchback?

Could it have been BL's first hatchback?

The maxi was a hatchback. I always thought the princess should have been a hatch too. My dad had one and it was the car i passed my driving test in. It was very comfortable and roomy with a good ride on its hydragas suspension. A bit like a c5!

Yes, the Maxi most definitely did have a hatchback but it was beaten to it by the R16 with was it's nearest competitor...

No contest. The Maxi could have been excellent but the R16 was always better in every way...

I believe it was Chris...

The first really ought to have been the ADO16 Austin.Morris 1100 and the Landcrabs but yet another set of opportunities were missed...

In fact, the original Mini lent itself to being one when you look at the rear layout...

Thanks for confirming my suspicions about the Maxi. No I can't guarantee that I didn't fall alseep during the programme (not through any possible boringness factor its just what I do!), but I think the story they wanted to tell was that the Allegro cocked-up by not being a hatchback, and in came the invasion from "the Continent". If you watch the programme, did the Maxi get a fair airing? After all it came on the scene in 1969 well in advance of the Golf etc in the mid-1970's.

Regards Neil

PS. As an incidental looking back there was something moderately pleasing about the lines of the first VW Passats, as for the Golf....not for me, not then, not now.

By and large my own self-imposed TV watching exile has continued but I do make an exception for one of my old favourites "University Challenge"! Final tonight and in summary Goldman who was Trimble-esque in his buzzing and answering, wiped the floor with Monkman, who had previously wiped the floor with the over-enthusiastic but strangely likable Seagull in the semi's. Stephen Hawking presented the prizes!

Now all of that will mean nothing to anyone who isn't a "fan"..but for me...great stuff!

Watched it too. Great stuff, and good to see the two team captains really on the ball!
Paxman's considerable interviewing and presentation skills quite challenged by Stephen Hawking...

Enjoyed the Timeshift family car programme too. Really quite disturbing looking at all that footage of motorways without crash barriers, car seats without head restraints, rigid steering columns, and seat belts hanging and unworn.

Down here, there is currently another sizeable road safety campaign to enforce the wearing of seat belts. Ironically, the biggest offenders in this regard are . . . the police themselves. Seat belt wearing by them seems to me to be about 30% at best. Presumably, they are immune to accidents and collisions - but not to running up the huge hospital costs of patching them up afterwards. Idiots.

Some class bits in this which has just been on Channel 5 tonight....should be available on-line somewhere.

"The cars that made Britain Great"
Host Rufus Hound and his guests go in search of the top car for rural living. Naturalist Nick Baker test drives the first Land Rover ever made to get a better idea of its legendary status. The vehicle became an icon of British motoring, despite having its roots in America. Plus, Tim Shaw suggests the Triumph Spitfire as ideal for summery country lanes and John Burton extols the virtues of the roomy Jaguar Mk 2. Rufus also considers the Ford Granada. With loads of room and plenty of power, it has everything a person would need in a country motor - and all with a bit of '70s style
...and there's the Range Rover too at the end.
I liked the Land Rover advert with of it winching itself up a concrete dam, and the clip from Rising Damp of Rigsby trying to woo Miss Jones with his Triumph Spitfire :-D

This coming Monday (22nd May) at 21:00 the BBC is showing the next series of "15 Billion Pound Railway", about the Cross Rail project. I saw the previous series, and it was very interesting.
