Todays POTD.... not that remarkable in itself but it does have one of our own in it, and I quite like the colourful "You are Here" map and the highlighting of the nearest cash machine.

You are here!

Spotted whilst out for a run this weekend...

being loaded onto a trailer...

Not sure if it's a class 25, 26 or 31... One for you to identify Neil ;)

Looks like it's off somewhere for work or it's been worked on at this location...

Location can be interpolated from a read of my blog ;)

I would plump for the one in the middle Jim, Class 26 at a guess...but there's no numbers on it! and the East Somerset Railway on their website/twitter doesn't have any such locos!

I have been trawling through photo's for a gathering of the clan (yesterday) as a 'surprise' birthday party for me.
Whilst doing that I found photo's of some of my previous cars.

This is the favourite and my first Citroen:

That's what my initial searched brought up - a big blank :(

I'm kicking myself now as the locomotive had a 'D' number very lightly chalked on it but it never came out in the pictures and I've no forgotten it

I was hoping your great skills at discovering these things would have nailed it's identity Neil ;)

We can't even ask Alasdair to go and look at it as it'll have moved away by now...

Steve, love your picture... Absolutely lovely :D

Neil, that's brilliant :D That's a brilliant bit of detective work, well done =D>

I now recall that indeed it was D5410 lightly chalked on the side...

Now, where is it off to now I wonder?

I was making a professional call at a client (who, amongst other things, has issues with pigeons) when another professional person made a visit with one of his tools of his trade. Meet Thor, a 40 week old Harris Hawk;

Just to finish off the story of D5410 Severn Valley railway has a wiki page on it. Sandwell Council own it as they wanted to preserve an example of a Birmingham Railway and Wagon Company BRWC locomotive. Currently on the stock list of the Severn Valley Railway.
SevernValley Railway wiki page D5410
No. D5410
Ex-British Railways
Designed by: Birmingham R C & W Ltd.
Built: 1961
Class: 27
Wheel arrangement: Bo-Bo
Horsepower: 1250
Owner: Sandwell Council
Notes: Moved offsite for bodywork overhaul: Nov 2015 to UKRail's facility in Leicester; then moved to Cranmore 23 Feb 2016.
Obviously its latest move hasn't been updated yet!

My next door neighbour has a buzzard and across the street they have hawks, owls and eagles.
Local pigeons are not intimidated.

Neil, thanks for the latest on D5410 :)

James, I just love Harris Hawks :D We could do with one around here as we too have issues with those verminous flying rats some call pigeons

I'd have been utterly delighted to have been in your shoes when you visited that client :D

Steve, I'm amazed your local pigeon population tolerate their neighbours!!!

Harris Hawks are used for pest control in a lot of London railway and tube stations...

The trick is to use the right raptor for the situation. In built up areas they use hawks, as they are (comparatively) slow and more agile than a falcon. A Harris Hawk flies at 50MPH, while a Peregrine Falcon (in a stoop) hits over 200MPH. Falcons are used in wide open areas for that reason.

Good gracious! That is amazing :o Never realised Falcons were that quick... Or Harris Hawks for that matter...

There would be on out-running them then... Once in their sights you're a goner I guess...

However, prey birds have learned that there are several ways to avoid becoming lunch. One way is to fly higher than the raptors, while another is to fly in large flocks. They have also learned how to tell the difference (to a degree) between harmless birds and dangerous ones. The BBC show "QI" showed how this happens. They had a silhouette that has a long thin section, then a pair of outstretched wings, then a short stubby bit. If the long thin bit is leading the rest of the shape it is probably a waterfowl, but id the short stubby bit is leading then it is likely to be a raptor.
