It could be worse. Here are some 1950s photos of IBM delivering 5MB hard drives;

That was still the case in the 1980s James... The 80Mb CDC cartridge drives I worked with for many years were as large as a decent domestic fridge...
And in those days 80Mb was a very respectable size.. As was the 256K Words (16 bit) of memory each mainframe they were attached to had...
How times have changed...

Re: Computer operating systems
Ubuntu online upgrade to 17.10 "Artful Aardvark".
I did wonder how they would cope with renaming it
40 minutes start to finish and was online the whole time without interruption other than a quick restart when all was done.
Online update is a bit slower* than a clean install but preserves almost everything - I did lose K3B and ClamTK but that is only a few minutes job to reinstall and would have happened with a clean install anyway.
There is now an (optional) night mode -alters the colour temperature of the display to a more subdued orangy-yellow with a blue cursor. Seems OK.
*no faffing with download/create bootableUSB/install from USB and no use of computer while it does it. Still quite quick and painless though.
Look and feel slightly different but they haven't stirred everything up so you can't find anything anymore, unlike some other well known software comany

Re: Computer operating systems
I can't cope with more than one type of OS Steve My poor old brain will not allow it...
I can just about manage the complete daily switch to Bill's Finest at work and then back to Mint at home - just...
But more than one OS at home would do for me

Oddly enough I am sufficiently familiar with them I can swap from one to another seamlessly.
It is a bit of a bind that I frequently forget which one I have dumped stuff in though

Re: Computer operating systems
'Mint Betsy', 'Mint Sarah' 'Artful Aardvark' - sounds like a cross between a sweet shop and Dr Zeuss
Anyway it all seems better than this Windows Creators Fall Update that is downloading - suffice it to say that it leaves a 30Gb installation footprint to clear up afterwards!

Re: Computer operating systems
My kids all loved Dr Seuss and had that too Marc.
Are you sure that isn't The Creator's Fail Update
As for clearing up it's own mess, Linux always does that admirably but does ask first as "It can take several hours"
Five minutes on mine.
I did find that Bleachbit and K3B were still there just not in the launcher.
Unfortunately the BleachBit root mode won't accept my root password.
No other bugs detected and this is the first in several years.
It is actually Mint Sonya now, my mistake.

Re: Computer operating systems
Windows updates are an evil, painful joke... Linux updates are seamless and slick. Mr. Gate's mob could learn a thing or two from Linux...
Never got into Dr Seuss as a kid... Still can't. Still don't get it... A bit like I don't get the cartoon strip with the big white dog in it who sits on his kennel most of the time making allegedly profound statements...
I think it's my general misunderstanding/dislike of Yankee so-called humour...
There are exceptions but not many...
Linux names show that their authors do have a sense of humour

Re: Computer operating systems
Best error message I've ever seen during boot on a Linux machine (Red Hat, circa 1999): "Memory parity error detected. Dazed and confused, but struggling to continue..."
...it did too, Windows just used to blue screen if that happened. Really do need to rebuild that poor old machine someday now I think about it.

Re: Computer operating systems
I am running Windows 8.1 on my Laptop. Once I used Windows 10 and it is not user friendly according to me. I prefer windows 8.1 over 10.
