Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Hi All,

I seem to be getting alot of ride noise in my 106. It seems to vary with speed, but its definately very noisy at 70. Below that it seems to change, hitting a high point at about 30-40. It also increases when I go around corners. It definately feels/sounds like noise from the front.

So I was suspecting wheel bearings possibly? Anyone...

Hi

I own a 1995 405 1905cc turbo diesel estate with around 240k on the clock.

A few weeks ago, it developed an oil leak. It wasn't there one day and it was the next. Overnight, it will leave a patch about 8 inches (20cms) across on the driveway after a 60 mile journey. I realise that little spilt oil goes a long way and I haven't had to top up...

Trouble is, it would be a right pain to replace it and find that it was OK after all. Go for an engine clean then. Its quite easy to see fresh oil traces afterwards :idea:

New to this forum and was wondering if any body would know what the small flat black module with four wires is and does that is on the back of the diesel pump on a 1999 306 turbo diesel, and if at all poss what the wires do?

Sounds like the immobiliser. This prevents somebody from easily hotwiring your stop solenoid and driving off. It is coded as a pair to your alarm/immobiliser. Can be bypassed if you are swapping injector pumps from one engine to another.

Few hours ago I changed two common rail injectors on my 306 Hdi with Bosch exchange at £173 inc VAT each. Am pleased to inform the forum that it has made the 2-3k rattle signifcantly quieter. Info on washers/pipes from the pug dealer: Apparently, the copper sealing washers will go either way up and the thicker repair washers is 1.9mm instead of the standard 1.6mm washer. Replacement high pressure pipes are bought as a set of four which are around £20 + VAT.

Can anyone help. I' fine with Citroen Rear arms, but I have purchased a 309 for my partner and the DRIVERS side rear wheel is leaning in quite a bit..

How much of a job is it to do these arms??? Or is it better to fit a COMPLETE rear subframe/axle unit??

Can anyone assist me.

Ref my previous thread re knocking the tickover on the 406 (1.9 TD) is set at 11 rpm.

I have read the Haynes regarding slowing down the tickover but cannot assertain which screw is fast idle and which is normal idle.

I have adjusted the one I thought (Furthest away from cambelt) and the front one appears to be fast...

my 306 decided all of a sudden to rev at 3000 instead of the normal 1000
all by itself but then goes to normal and fluctuates up and down again
we had a diagnostic done by independent garage free as he a friend and was told it is the steppo motor??
so we changed this and it is doing exactly the same as before and after talking...

I believe the immobiliser has a 30 second delay. If you should stall the car, the green light on the immobiliser stays on for quite a while (not timed it), so you can obviously get started again and on your way. Having to type in your code again would be a downright problem on roads in this day and age.

I found this out when trying to start away...

However, just as I was finishing off, I snapped one of the pipes off the little black widget which is between the leak-off pipes and the pipe from the filter housing. What is this widget...

Thank chuff for that. Just Peugeot's April Fool joke for those who manage to change all 4 plugs without a problem, then! Luckily managed to find a scrappy still open at 3.30 pm on a sat, then found a late ZX TD and swiped a leak-off pipe and banjo union to replace it all.

4 months ago i changed my pads/discs/shoes and drums and last month replaced the fluid. The brakes still dont feel 2 sharp. The pedal feels fine but its as if theres brake fade even when the brakes are cold

i was wondering if i should slacken the handbrake adjust up the shoes and then tighten the handbrake to get the best out of the rear brakes....

Adjust the handbrake with the auto adjuster on the brake shoes - not by simply tightening the handbrake cable, if this is what you've done.
If the shoes aren't properly adjusted so they're close to the drum, you'll have a longer pedal travel.

The poor brake feel may simply down to the pads you've got. I recently put Bendix pads on my Xsara, and...

This is a post on behalf of my dad.

He has a 306 Y plate hdi estate 50k and full dealer history.

This service though because of the wait at main dealer he took the car to very well known garage for a std service.

He got the car back and drove it for 1 week before he heard a knocking from the top end (that's where it sounds like it's coming...

Hi All,

I noticed last Friday that my Speedo wasn't working. So I assumed the cable had snapped.

Took the car to peugeot today to get the cable changed and they found that the cable was still intact, and that the worm drive in the gearbox had gone. To repair this they have quoted me about £240 cause they need to drop the gearbox out to do it....

Oops being a bit dense.

Its a 405 (1.9td estate), It looks from the quote that the main bit is only £2.64 it the driveshaft removal and refitting is the expensive bit at £99.75 plus another 60 odd for the rest of the labour.

The parts only come to about £40. Its all the labour that gonna eat the money.

As it's the labour that is the expensive...

Hey guys.. me again!

Anyone know where the alarm sounder on my xsi is? Its a P-reg, phase 2.

The alarm goes off (all the time!) but the lights flash and a relay clicks (immobiliser comes on)... no sound!

Also i need a new ultrasonic sensor.. as when my drivers side one is conencted the alarm always goes off. Any ideas on this too?

yeah bumper off,you can get bumper off without removing washer bottle.you may be able to loosen one side and bend it out enough to change lamp can be done like that.

I noticed the ignition light glowing today. I got home this evening and tried to start car but wouldn't crank over. Jumpstarted it and took jumpleads off. Voltage across battery was below 12 and heading south. Assume alternator has failed. It is a valeo with a 6 groove pulley. It is sat under the power steering pump and looks a pig to get...

Rather than curse and swear I got the alternator overhauled today by a specialist repairer. He charged £75 to take it off , recondition it ( the slip rings were the problem apparently) and refit it.I didn't think that was too bad with a year's warranty.

My car is running warm and is very slugish, it runs rough and the management light is on,

If i start the car and pull the brown connector off the pump there is no change in engine note, If i pull the tdc sensor off there is also no change, If i pull the injector lift sensor off the engine note changes and wants to stall

If its a Bosch pump I don't think your Haynes manual will cover the ecu controlled pump control. the advance corrector is applicable to pre ecu pumps.

I agree with you though. Your pump is certainly running at full advance.

Are you replacing the pump with one of exactly the same design ?

I replaced my Bosch pump (with imobiliser) with an older Bosch pump without imobiliser. I had a timing issue with the ecu controlled pump. But, to dissable the imobiliser on the Bosch looks like a tricky job to remove all those shear off security bolts.

My car Pug 405 glx td has had a knocking noise coming from the front passenger side area for a while and before i take it to the garage i'd like a few pointers.

Its worse over rough surfaces, a few people have said it sounds like a worn bush/ drop link. So ive started with the easy to change items and put on a new drop link and that has made it...

With or without the vacuum pipe connected, my car idles much better with the ignition at maximum advance. ie with the dizzy turned entirely one way.

Is it safe to run it like this, or should I set it to 8degrees BTDC and suffer a lumpy idle and judders at low speeds?

It has to be said that the car is fitted with a 280 degree duration camshaft....

You'll need to get it on a rolling road to get the ignition set properly as cam timing and ignition timing are linked, change one and another will need changing.
Best way to do it is advance it a bit at a time until it pinks when you accelerate and then back it off a bit to stop the pinking.

are the wires / sensors built into all 306`s to display the temp on a compatable display?

Easy one this and one I can answer as I've done it!
The loom is present as far as the passenger door. What you will need is a door loom from a model with the temp sensor in the wing mirror and the sensor itself. Simply plug all these into your car, plug in the clock\temp display and off you go!
I did this on my old DTurbo, worked a treat! :D

Just been looking on the Pug parts cd rom & the later 306 TU3 ( 1.4 litre petrol ) fuel filters do use clip on connections for the fuel filter.

It might be an idea to visit your Peugeot dealers parts department with the cars VIN number & ask about the filter.

Your car could be one that's a cross over between a change or modification that was...

Hi,

I have a 1997 R reg 306 D turbo that smokes quite alot on start up (only when its been stood all day or night) and spluuters as well (a bit like a misfire on a petrol engine).
When thew glow plugs were replaced I used none genuine ones as they were cheaper.
Do you think that these might not be giving out a high enough temperature or is it...

Check for air leaks in the system.....have you 'messed' with the fuel filter or leak off pipes recently. Sounds like air in the system to me, try using the priming bulb before starting and see if it improves,

For the MOT inspection...
should they check the condition of the driveshaft bearings/joints

or just visually check the condition of the gaitors?

What does the egr valve do? can it stick open and is there any solenoids go to it?

My peugeot 406dt r reg is makeing a loud suction noise from the egr valve are and strugleing to start when the brown wire on the pump is connected.

If i pull the brown wire off the suction noise is not there and it starts a little better.

Worth doing a search on this - the general consensus among forum members is they're better off disabled.
I've disconnected the vacuum pipe to the EGR on my Xsara, which means it can't open.
EGRs cause carbon build-up in the inlet manifold etc over time.

I usually use my uncles tools, a i cannot afford my own (student)... he is currently away and need to purchase a rachet and the correct socket for it...

Anyone know what causes the wipers to jerk as they park?

Doesnt happen if they are on constant, as soon as they are coming to park they seem to jump down the screen.

I can also hear a clicking coming from the relay.

I'm new here & in a lot of trouble I've broken HER beloved pug & promised to fix it.........

The question is can anybody tell me how to get the cam box cover off ? its a 306 2.0xsi with the early 8v XU series lump ?

After removing all the bolts, hoses etc I expected to be able to just lift it off but there is not enough room at the...

The bugger came off just as you explained

But now its all got a lot worse..........

Whilst tinkering I droped the oil & found it was quite milky (1st horror) so did a quick pressure test & it was S**t on 1 & 2 cyls (2nd horror).

I stripped the inlet manifold out & discovered the oil leak which I thought was coming from the cam box...

Could someone tell me the whereabouts of the alarm siren in a 405 GLX, (headlights flash as though the alarm is going off, but there is no noise).

Bonnet sensor getting water in it & tripping the alarm.

Ultrasonic sensors setting the alarm off all the time.

Battery back up sirens going quite & then killing the battery.

They can cause problesm with the fag lighter socket.

Hi all,

After a recent theft of an aftermarket unit, I refitted my g/f's original radio cassette in the car. At the time I didn't have the code - it was written down in the docs or on the spare key.

Anyway, I return to the stereo later to find that the g/f has been messing with it and it is now displaying ERROR 2 .

Any idea how to get back to...

error 4 useally means how many times wrong code has been entered,try holding band button to see if it clears to allow you to enter correct code if not leave radio on without touching igntion untill it say code in or 4 dashes this can take up to 2 hrs

Just thinking of getting a 2L 406 coupe circa 97/98... Was just wondering if anyone could tell me what sort of MPG i could expect from this and whether there is a significant differnce in the MPG obtained from the revised 2L engine that came in I think in 99 or 2000.

Got a small prob with my window switches, only the switch in the drivers door that operates the passenger door window lights up when the ignition is on, i have tried changing switches with ones from a scrapyard but they still don't illuminate, could there be any other reason or have i just replaced duff switches with more duff switches? as...

Hi All
Can anyone tell me the fuse position for the cigar lighter on a 98 406 TD?
I have scanned the fuse box and all look ok. Absolutely everything else but the cigar lighter works. There is no power to the plug on the bottom of the lighter and none to the bulb holder. Is this a common problem?
If not how does the centre console come out? I will...

did you know there are industry standards being rolled out for automotive technicians? Its a bit like corgi register for our plumber but for cars.Each technician will be assesed for skils at 3 posible levels,service,diagnostic and master technicians.with modern day cars getting more complex i see this is a good idea as far too man people work on...

Got a problem with my brothers 306 '94 td. The heater blower motor and rear demister does not turn on. I have searched for the problem on the forum, and changed the barrel / switch - but it still won't work. It had worked intermititantly, but when it stops working does so for ages.

There also seems to be a clicking from the relays - again...

OK as my 405 has just passed its MOT with minimal work required I think it is time to sort out a few niggling little things, Starting with the stereo remote.

Something in the switch broke not long after I got the car (previous owner was a bit heavy handed I think) and now the stalk hangs limp, and doesn't change anything on the radio.

Hi,

I had the same problem with my 306 so bought a replacement stalk,
However when I removed the steering column trim I found that the plastic lugs that the screws for the stalk go into were broken, hence the whole stalk was moving.
Might be worth checking before going and getting a replacement stalk.

It's a bit of a bodge but i fixed the problem!

Checked all wires, connections, fuses etc that I could find and still it wouldn't find.

Checked the voltage on the stop solonoid and there was nothing so I stripped back some of the wire going into it and soldered a wire onto it with a crocodile clip onto the battery.

It started first go!

Would I be able to fit a gearbox from a non turbo diesel 306, onto a 405 turbo diesel, and would I have to change anything. The gearbox in my 405 at the moment is very notchy and is sometimes hard to get into reverse, does it sound like its on its way out, or could it be the clutch which is very heavy, I have only just got the car and judging by...

get clutch working properly. then if car appears to have been neglected.. change gearbox oil. existing oil may be wrong type, old and contaminated or low level.

If service history is unknown.. I would change all oils, coolant, brake fluid and filters

My Petrol 405 1.8 GL 119,000 miles, has developed a whine when driving. It only happens when in second or third gear. Its quite loud in second but very loud in third. Sounds a bit like straight cut gear sounds or even the whine sound when an electric window operates. Its definatley the gear box because if you dip the clutch it goes away and...

I'd suggest getting a couple of quotes to fit a gearbox, whilst it is apart you really should consider changing the clutch, and I would change the rear main oil seal as well. It all depends on how confident you feel about doing it yourself, but a day should be enough time but it depends on what snags you might encounter along the way.

Hi everyone,
I have broken 2 of the 4 pins on the lock wheel bolt adapter and thus am left with wheels that won't come off.! Any suggestions as to how I can undo them would be appreciated as I need to replace brake discs and struts for MOT.

I suppose the Impact Driver idea makes sense, as you can actually hold the adaptor into the bolt itself. I found the problem of getting them undone was exacerbated by the tommy-bar/wheel brace pulling the adaptor off the bolt as I tried to turn it. This is where damage to the holes in the bolts occurs and...

Hello.

I have a 205 with the 1124cc TU series engine. I would like to replace the valve stem oil seals. I would expect to remove the head to do this. I've read the Haynes book and it describes that great care is needed in removing the cylinder head to avoid disturbing the wet liners.

I have removed the head from my 205xs many times and no particular special care is needed, just don't turn the engine with the head off.

I personally wouldn't bother trying to replace the seals with the head in place, you may as well replace the head gasket, decoke it and get a few thou skimmed off the head at the same time. That doesn't cost...

Hi -I have a 1996 /N 106 1.5 diesel with 118,000 miles. Had it for two years and changed the coolant when I got it and changed the thermostat at the same time.

Radiator recently was looking past its best and never really heated up, still had cold parts even after long drives.

So bought a new radiator and have just fitted it along with a change...

This is very true. The 106 1.4D I had the misfortune to drive for a while could actually keep the engine cold with the heater. The rad for these is massively over-specified, as I believe it's similar on all models, and has to be able to cool a 1.6 petrol engine.

Can someone please enlighten me as to the location of the outside temp sensor on a 406.

My one is reading a constant 17 degree's whatever the outside temp is.

Had the timing belt and water pump replaced on my 406 HDi,about October last year,by a guy local to me that I had never used before,as I normally use another local about a mile away,but they couldn't get me in.

He also did the rear brake discs,handbrake shoes,and pads which I supplied,and the total bill was only £180.

Very reasonable I thought....
