Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

My RH cooling fan had been a bit intermittent lately. I suspected a dodgy connection/relay. Everything checked out fine. The fan would only start with a careful poke at the blades from a screwdriver through the grill (don't do this at home kids). Then after a week or so it stopped working...

Where in the rev range is the turbo set to kick in or is it there all the time?
On my 306 HDi you can feel the turbo from about 1300rpm, up to 3000rpm. It really gets going at 2000rpm, that seems to be the sweet spot.

I've got a 406, 2001model, the airbag light keeps flashing, diagnosis(pp2000) shows persistent problem--front passenger airbag explorder--open circuit , checked wire between ECU and passenger airbag, it's normally circulative. two side airbags no problem. now the garage can't be sure of the problem of airbag itself, ECU or seat belt...

Has someone checked the connection on the back of the airbag? Some airbags have a metal clip over the connector & if the connector comes slightly lose this clip shorts out & puts the warning light on.

Ive no idea if your airbag has this sort of safety clip on it though but it might be worth a look.

My car starts and idles fine but on about quarter acceleration and above the engine seems to hold back and revs fluctuate even on steady throttle. When this happens the exhaust has a bluish colour. Any suggestions gratefully accepted

fitted new gasket and set timing, problem was still there but to a lesser degree, went and got a gallon of diesel and put feed and return pipes direct into fuel can. engine now revs freely and no smoke, turned out to be fuel filter on end of pickup pipe in tank. thank you for all your suggestions which were greatly appreciated :D

406 2.0 petrol turbo.

During the hot weather on Friday, my turbo developed a loud howl, part way through a journey. No popping sounds, and no other signs of problems, just a howl around 1500 - 2000rpm.

When I get home and check things out I realise it's also got a backfire, when blipping the throttle from tick-over (it was always slightly...

Well, after replacement of the turbo, and a reset of the ECU everything is fine (almost).

The car starts easily, with the K warning light extinguishing immediately (much quicker than before), and everything runs just fine. Acceleration is now consistent too, which is a bonus, and the overheating seems to have stopped too, though ambient temps...

Hi. seems my BIL's 306 has blotted it's copybook yesterday by going and sheering it's main output pipe completely on the rear flange before it meets the centre box. Despite the fact the car has only actually covered 30k miles - I guess it's low usage has been worse than normal wear and tear.

GSF list one for £120 + vat but before I tell him to go...

Update!!

Well, it's all beeen done - the WHOLE system from the flange ahead of the cat backwards was renewed using BOSAL boxes and hangars/cat fitting kit and the necessary jointing bracket; all in for £152.

The quality seems good - the rear box nice and heavy. Southern Exhausts had everything off the shelf for this very reasonable outlay too....

I had assumed from reading various forums, that the pollen filter woudl be in the passenger footwell, under the glove box, behind the various switches.

However, when I got in there to look (having bought a replacement filter) I can't find anythign that matches the shap of the filter!

So 2 questions.

1: Just exactly where is the pollen filter? I...

The Bosch book says 10 minutes, but I had to spend an extra 5 minutes digging out all the leaves n other creepy crawly crap that had amassed over time.

My air con now actually blows air at me.. and it doesn't stink!

Thew only job left now is the lights for the climate control dials!

Ended up getting a new radiator for the 405 TD for £82. Scrabbled about looking for the old twist-off connectors, and finally have it back on the road and running at a sensible temp.

Thats the black box with the 2 locking cable connectors.
Apparently, its not behind the rear seat, as on the hatchback.

Hi,

I'm getting a wierd clunk when I change gears between 1st and 2nd on my '95 106 XN. It also happens if I pull away too sharply in first. However I've not yet noticed it in other gears, and it doesn't happen if I pull away really gently.

Any ideas if anything is wrong and if so, what?

Take a look at the geatrbox clutch housing - where the clutch cable attaches. Any means of manual adjustments here ?
If so then try get the clutch pedal higher. It should stay some 140mm over any carpetting - which is quite higher than the other pedals.

Hi,
The 406 - '96 with 90k on her. The rear tyres are wearing away on inner part of tread. The car also twitches when cornering and crossing bumps.

Has anyone experiece of this? Any info greatly appreciated.

For last MOT, the rear link bars were replaced. Pulling on lifted wheel no play obvious. Wheel off, inspecting things nothing is obviously...

Malcolm, the rear link bars CAN fail after less than 10,000 miles as I've recently found to my cost.

I bought two of these from different branches of a local factor. Both parts claiming to be manufactured by Motaquip.

One started to clonk in less than 7,000 miles (I had the same problem with ARB droplinks too).

Serviced engine last month

Hi all, i have a 1991 peugeot 405 Sri and next to the ECU is a small black box that holds 2 relay's are these the realys for Main/Dip beam ? as when i was tinkering under the bonnet my brother was messing with my lights and there was a clicking noise that appeared to come from the small black box. Any ideas ?

This has got me a little bit lost:

A 1994 Pug 306 1.6 with TU engine, and multi-point (but all injectors fire at the same time) injection.

While driving, as you accelerate through about 4-5k rpm, the engine cuts out, and the ECU warning lamp comes on. Take your foot off the accelerator, and it comes back to life. If you drive below 4k, then it's...

ECU's dont take kindly to sparky reconnections. I always try and reconnect the battery terminals short, sharp and firmly to avoid any likely glitches in the ECU.

Chaps, how hard would you say it is to replace Clutch Master and Slave Cylinders on a 406 V6?

I am thinking of buying one and the owner has been told this is whats wrong with his car.

If that Diagnosis is wrong, I guess the car may need a clutch.. that could be a big job.. (compared to my normal Xantia 1.8 Clutch) ?

Me again! :oops:

My friend has a 406 Exective 1998 S plate 2 ltr HDI (one of the first?)

His remote central locking seems to work when it feels like it.
Sometimes it will work when you are away from the car but not near it. Sometimes it wont work at all and sometimes it works for about 5 or 6 lock/unlocks.

Hi,
I know, it's me again! :roll:

Still trying to get an idle valve solenoid so no update yet.

another glitch has appeared.

When the air circulation is switched to outside air there is a very audible ticking coming from under the dash.
When on recirc (light on) it's fine.
Took pollen filter out and the flap is moving without a problem....

On my 1999 Mk2 406 hdi Executive I have the A/c on all the time and the fan on auto.

My question is:-

the fan in auto mode boosts occasionally . ie when you turn the heat up full and the cars been running a while.
However, in the sun and with the temp set to 16 (outside may be 16 also but in the car probably 30) the a/c blows cold but the auto...

Found it!

Exactly where you said in the overhead console.

The fan etc was working so I sprayed it with electrical contact cleaner (Seems to be a wire going across).

Went out in the car this morning and the fan boosted a treat (Just hope it keep's doing it!)

chaps, I am offered a 406 LPG 2 litre Turbo

should be a useful car? what are these engines like? I used to have a 605 SLi is this the same engine with a turbo bolted on? Should be reasonably powerful.. maybe same engine as Xantia turbo?

in the end, I did some research, and there was one major problem with the car. The tank had been fitted in Lithuania (seller was from there, had driven car back there to fit)
I was informed it 100% needed an LPGA certificate from a UK fitter.. He didnt have this and tried to get me to believe it was ok without. Not one insurer,...

The air con has stopped working and also the heater n my 206 hdi dturbo?

No fuses have blown and have swapped relays around but nothing?

When you turn the buttons the lights come on saying they are on but nothing.

Any ideas or is they a known fault with these.

The car is a 2000 W reg

your a/c will not work as thermostatic ecu need to see voltage to fan before compressor gets supply to cut in,needs to be on at least speed 1 for it to work.you shoul have supply at heater control panel on pin 5a which is ignition supply through fuse40,if ok check supply out of heater control panel on pins 2b,3b,4b and 5b this will change to each...

I hope somebody out there can help me,

I have a problem with my Peugeot 405 at the moment, all bulbs are ok as i have tried them in a friends car. I have side lights and main beam but dip only works every now and then, I was told it was the stalk on the steering column that was the problem but I have replaced it with a new one and its still no...

errr..... can't remember about a MK1 405.... I think they might possibly be part of the fuse box, or could be behind the headlamps. Been several years since I had a MK1!

You may of course be able to trace their location from the click when you switch the dip beams on...

HI guys
I think i need to change my plip as its working less and less well. i say less well it has started to be come intermittant. Sometimes it locks or unlocks the car some times it doesnt. And there is no ryhme or reason to it. The only thing that has made any difference is the way i press the button. kind of hard and rock it

I am in the process of swapping my cloth interior for a leather interior.

I have come across 2 major problems.

In my lovely 'base' spec 605 I had no headrests in the rear, and therefore no mounting brackets. Fortunately the owner of the donor vehicle has been VERY helpfull and will hopefully be supplying me with the brackets off the rear bulk...

I dont get it. Why does everyone say that about leather seats? My calibra had them and they were fine. The heated eliment ment that thay were not cold in the winter... and they never got too warm in the summer.

My 307 has recently warned me of this Antipollution fault (and engine management light on) on 2 occasions now. On both occasions, the fault dissapeared after a few starts of the car. Currently the fault isnt appearing. The car didnt lose performance or anything. I couldnt find anything wrong with it. I have booked it in to the dealer.

Hi All, I am trying to do a favour to a friend by getting her 405 through its MOT (that is now done, but there is a very ominous knock from front drivers wheel area)

For the MOT I did,

2 x disks
Both Offside inner suspension arm bushes

that is all i have done in that area of car.

hi. i have a 2000 406 hdi, when accelerating hard there is a rattling noise coming from the engine (between 2000-3000 rpm) it seems to get quieter as the engine gets warmer, has anyone come across this before? any help would be gladly appreciated thanks.

Ive got A few random questions about a 405 glx if any one can help?

Would a 95 M reg 405 glx 1.9 td come with ABS as standard or was it an option? i sure the aircon was standard on this car at this time and i thought ABS was too.

When turning the engine on from cold on this car is the any reason for the water in the radiator to slowly rise ??...

Hi all

I had a 405 STdT, on a 1994 L reg. It had sunroof, air con AND ABS fitted, unfortunally the Air con never worked...

Shame.. oh, and no air bag.. That was fitted months later, as said above.

Hi All,

I seem to be getting alot of ride noise in my 106. It seems to vary with speed, but its definately very noisy at 70. Below that it seems to change, hitting a high point at about 30-40. It also increases when I go around corners. It definately feels/sounds like noise from the front.

So I was suspecting wheel bearings possibly? Anyone...

For future reference, the guy in the garage jacked the car, and then just span each wheel hard. It became bloody obvious which wheel wasn't working properly!

It now feels like I'm driving a magic carpet ;)

Hi

I own a 1995 405 1905cc turbo diesel estate with around 240k on the clock.

A few weeks ago, it developed an oil leak. It wasn't there one day and it was the next. Overnight, it will leave a patch about 8 inches (20cms) across on the driveway after a 60 mile journey. I realise that little spilt oil goes a long way and I haven't had to top up...

Trouble is, it would be a right pain to replace it and find that it was OK after all. Go for an engine clean then. Its quite easy to see fresh oil traces afterwards :idea:

New to this forum and was wondering if any body would know what the small flat black module with four wires is and does that is on the back of the diesel pump on a 1999 306 turbo diesel, and if at all poss what the wires do?

Sounds like the immobiliser. This prevents somebody from easily hotwiring your stop solenoid and driving off. It is coded as a pair to your alarm/immobiliser. Can be bypassed if you are swapping injector pumps from one engine to another.

Info on washers/pipes from the pug dealer: Apparently, the copper sealing washers will go either way up and the thicker repair washers is 1.9mm instead of the standard 1.6mm washer. Replacement high pressure pipes are bought as a set of four which are around £20 + VAT.

2.0 exec 406 has been running well just lately, no major problems to report, except a very annoying knocking kind of sound from the rear that's just started in the last few weeks.

Can anyone help. I' fine with Citroen Rear arms, but I have purchased a 309 for my partner and the DRIVERS side rear wheel is leaning in quite a bit..

How much of a job is it to do these arms??? Or is it better to fit a COMPLETE rear subframe/axle unit??

Can anyone assist me.

Ref my previous thread re knocking the tickover on the 406 (1.9 TD) is set at 11 rpm.

I have read the Haynes regarding slowing down the tickover but cannot assertain which screw is fast idle and which is normal idle.

I have adjusted the one I thought (Furthest away from cambelt) and the front one appears to be fast...

hi can anyone help
my 306 decided all of a sudden to rev at 3000 instead of the normal 1000
all by itself but then goes to normal and fluctuates up and down again
we had a diagnostic done by independent garage free as he a friend and was told it is the steppo motor??
so we changed this and it is doing exactly the same as before and after talking...

I believe the immobiliser has a 30 second delay. If you should stall the car, the green light on the immobiliser stays on for quite a while (not timed it), so you can obviously get started again and on your way. Having to type in your code again would be a downright problem on roads in this day and age.

I found this out when trying to start away...

I have been lurking for a while and found the forum nothing but helpful. Changed all 4 glow plugs today without any problem on my '93 405 Hunter TD. However, just as I was finishing off, I snapped one of the pipes off the little black widget which is between the leak-off pipes and the pipe from the filter housing. What is this widget...

Thank chuff for that. Just Peugeot's April Fool joke for those who manage to change all 4 plugs without a problem, then! Luckily managed to find a scrappy still open at 3.30 pm on a sat, then found a late ZX TD and swiped a leak-off pipe and banjo union to replace it all.
