Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Hi, have an `89 205 diesel n/a diesel 5 door. Suspension clonks over bumps and pot holes, o/s/f seems the worse though it does sometimes seem like each side of the car is doing it almost like it`s the whole side of the car and not just the corners.
It`s been suggested that the drop links are the problem so can someone please explain (in layman`s...

Rear subframe mounts aren't technically difficult, but you've got to drop the rear suspension beam.
There should be loads on it in the archive, I remember RichardW wrote a load about it when he did a ZX.
Why not book your car in for an MoT test? For about £40 you'd get a full run down on the brakes and suspension, and you can take it from there....

My Stepsister has just brought a very tidy basic 306 n/a diesel.Going to give it a service next weekend for her,just the basic oil,oil air fuel filter.Just wondering if any one could tell me how much oil it takes.IIRC my TD A/C Xantia took just over 4 liters.Would just like to know as it takes out some off the guess work :) .

Taken in part exchange. Drove in. Ex owner reckons he has never used the keypad in starting it. It winds over quite OK but a bit on the slow side. I have checked the rubber ball to ensure there is fuel getting to the filter.

Hi guys

i seem to be having a problem sometimes when i start the car up. The engine seems to be revving up and down and sometimes just goes up so i have to switch off the engine quickly. Its quite random but switching the car on and off a few times cures the problem until it re-occurs

any ideas what the problem could be

The rear lights on my 1993 309 are unreliable. Sometimes one or other of them stops working (usually a brake light or reversing light). If I open the unit and move the bulb slightly it comes on again. I've tried new bulbs, and cleaning the bulbs and sockets with contact cleaner. These actions solve the problem, but after a few weeks it happens...

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked the wiring with a multimeter - all seems to be OK, but I did find a problem with the lamp sockets. The metal contacts which touch the ends of the bulbs looked OK, but when I put the meter on them there were some patches which didn't conduct - some kind of insulating oxide layer? Still got my 406 HDI 110hp 2001.Yesterday something on the engine started to rattle like a loud ticking noise.Took it to peugeot dealer who had a look at it outside and said probably the bottom crank pulley was the cause.They can't work on the car until next week because they are busy,however its going to cost £193 inc labour.I am not convinced...

1. Which pulley should be changed. What I mean is - is there just the one pulley to change - or is there more?

2. Also where to buy this from and how much would it be. Any idea on labour? Should the water pump be changed too?...

Hi gents

Ive just replaced coil pack as a previous post, now there is a smell of petrol in the car when stood in traffic. Whilst driving it isnt noticable. Its obviously coming through air vents. Just had a look under bonnet and there is a smell, but to me, nothing obvious.

Any help will be appreciated!!

Hi folks,

I have a 406 2.1td LX, and have a PAS fluid leak.

Managed to get the car on ramps at the weekend for an inspection. Fluid was gathering on the back of the subframe, the distributor ( whatever it is that the steering column goes into ) has dry connections, and the other end of these connections on the ram also appear to be fairly dry....

Hi guys

I read my previous post in this and it apeared a bit rushed. Tuesday night on mway slowed in queueing traffic when set off again it started kangarooing, then once in 3rd gear ok. So at 70 it was ok until we hit an incline and then it slowed and struggled. Got to work realised idle was a bit erratic and appeared to be missing.

We bought it as accident repaired. It should have a/c but some pipework is missing and we are waiting for the parts.

Girlfriends,1.5 diesel has developed an irritating fault;could do with some pointers.
From cold ,starts fine, but cuts out when revved/under load.Once warmed up everything is fine.

Sometimes the priming bulbs can split - allowing air in, and fuel then goes back to the tank - leaving you with only what's in the filter / lines.

One method I've read about is to use something like vaseline around the joins ( one at a time ) - if the problem goes away, then that's the join to fix.

On a trip back from london I was alarmed to have a warning light start to glimmer and fade, then come on intermittently with progressive regularity!

During this time I noticed that the temperature gauge was bouncing around between normal and 80ish, but NEVER going much above its normal 90odd degrees.

Thanks Jim. I Have stopped worrying a little now. I replace the fuel filter fairly regularly as I am naughty and run a mix of vegetable oil in the fuel! I will keep a closer eye on the coolant levels. I have been sat in traffic during the hot weather so I should have been more observant.

But It wasn't a radiator on the light, so the water/fuel...

Right, since flushing the radiator out on my 405, I have noticed it has been losing water when running, normally only a problem if the temperature creeps up a bit far.
It is fine when standing, however the system doesn't really seem to pressurise at all. Any ideas?

Also, had the car in garage this morning for them to look at on of the injectors,...

The water pump normally shows it is beginning to leak by growing a little mound of white corrosion near the shaft. This is impossible to see without removing the camblet covers though. First you usually know about it is a little drop of blue water hanging from the lowest point of that end of the engine or from the bottom of the cam belt cover....

Hi,

Can anyone here comment on how easy/hard it is to do a clutch on a 405 1.9TD GTX Estate? I'm not bad with the spanners and did the cambelt, tensioners, waterpump, etc last autumn. I intend to change the cable too..... :(

I think I've persueded to wife move over from the darkside (VW Polo) and have my old Pug. It's not as bad as it sounds,...

I'm changing the clutch on my 405TD with a BE3 gearbox. GSF don't do a clutch cable and a local car spares has quoted me £31. Can anyone let me know if this is over the odds and if so where I should get one from? I've also checked Europarts but they don't do one either. Google's drawn a blank too.

my 306 dturbo engine races after a warm start up never from cold i then have to blip the throttle and it returns to idle.

Is this a air in the fuel problem as previously answered for the guy with the 2.1td and if so are the same checks valid

We have had 205 diesels since '91, and have concluded for my wife at least that power steering is essential.

However can anyone confirm how light a 1100 petrol 205 car is in comparison, as the MOT is due and I'm taking nothing for granted, and am keeping eyes open for another just in case.

Recently bought the Partner Combi Escapade 2nd hand and have a query re the central locking (not remote).

Can anyone tell me if it should operate fully from both front doors? At present I can turn the key in the driver door to both lock and unlock all the doors.

Hi - just getting all my problems solved today hopefully (see my other posts on oil on coolant and engine check light).

Car is a 1998 806 1.9 SLDT with 97,000 miles. The car has started to shake between 45 and 55 mph. It is the whole car which shakes and not detectable in the steering - so I had assummed it was the balance of the rear wheels....

I will bet good money that this is a knackered driveshaft tri-axe (inner) joint.

get under the car, and then try to lift the shaft (radial movement rather than axial) while it's in position. Any movement at all indicates it's knackered.

Right gents, new turbo is workign a treat on my 406, and almost everything is hunky-dorey.

The snag is that after a couple of starts following an ECU reset, the K warning light has begun to stay on for a second or two after starting the engine.

The remote keyfob for my 306 is the two-button high-frequency type and recently stopped working. On inspection I found a split in one of the rubber buttons so I opened it up and all the joints looked dry so I reckon water had gotten in and knackered it :cry:

I've bought a replacement plip from Peugeot and the guy at the parts counter told me...

Provided the needle doesn't go too far towards the red section you've no worries. On a hot day, or when towing, it might go a bit further but if it stays out of the red you need't worry. If you think it's getting a bit too close to the red section put the heater on full with the booster motor on full, because the heater acts like a second radiator.

Over time an intermittent fault on my 1996 106 1.5 XLD has got worse and now the indicator relay constantly does a high sped click (as though a bulb has blown) when the indicators are turned off. Whilst clicking neither the dashboard bulb or the actual indicators flash. When operated from the indicator lever all of the indicators operate...

Ive recently bought a 306 hdi and serviced this last week. When i come to do the fuel filter this cap was very stiff and i was careful not to split the housing or the cap. I ensured that the o ring and metal ring was replaced but it didnt feel nice when i replaced the cap. It was really tough and wouldnt seat right at first.

ok, so my old rover isnt technically a peugeot, but the engine is....

the waxstat has stuck in the cold position on my XUD. i'm draining the coolant in a few weeks to change the waterpump, so i'll take care of it properly then. until then, am i ok to just disconnect the cable? i dont mind having to increase the idle with my foot in the mornings...

If the waxstat doesn't work, disconnecting the cable won't alter anything. Back in the early 80's when Ford didn't have their own diesel engines, they used a Peugeot one. I had one in an old Sierra. When the waxstat broke, Ford spares didn't have a clue what I wanted. In the end I disconnected the wire and fitted up a choke cable to the dash board.

I have tested the tdc sensor by unplugging the injector sensor and the tacho works.

How can i test the speed sensor????????????????????????

Also does anyone know what sensors the car uses to feed the ecu with information as it appears to not be adjusting the timeing????????????

Car is a 806 from 1998 SLDT 1.9 turbo diesel, with 97,000 miles. Occasionally the orange check engine light warning light has been coming on - usually when the car is warmed up and when slowing down - foot on the brake and the revs have fallen back. The second you then put your foot on the accelerator and increase the revs then the light goes out....

Sounds like a sensor is getting groggy, ( or could be tied in with your oil problem).
from my understanding of engine computors; when a reading from a sensor is out of range, the EC often substitutes a reading to keep things going, and the EC light on the dash comes on to advise that something's not 100%

I wouldn't be too worried about it, but...

Im not sure if the 406 is a cable all the way from the dash to the gearbox or electronic. It could be a number of things like its coming loose from its socket etc or a split in it if its like the old Visa gti ones that were half electronic.
Do you have a Haynes manual as that might show it? if not hopefully somoene else will answer here who has...

I have the same speedo problem with a 96 605. I have been advised to take the sender unit off the gear box and either clean it up or replace it! Apparently it could be dirt in the 'reader' or a looe, faulty connection from the sender.

Mine seems to be effected by moisture and cold starts!

Would be interesting to know how it is effecting the mpg?...

I've recently fitted a Nokia CARK-91 handsfree kit to my 2002 406. I bought it on Ebay and it came without instructions. I've looked up the Nokia web site but it was no help. All connections have been made except for one yellow wire which is a stereo mute, intended to mute the radio upon answering a call.

Car is 1998 806 1.9TD with 97,000 miles. It needed a new radiator about 6 months ago. I did notice after a while there were a few globs of oil in the new coolant. But now it is pretty oily all through. It is also consuming some coolant, the low level light came on the other day so topped it up. There is some really thick gloop under the coolant...

Sounds like it is the head gasket to me. However, there is another possibility which, although less likely, is a lot cheaper to eliminate.

On the 405 1.9td engine there is an oil cooler and may be the same on the 806 version. Behind where the oil filter screws in, there is a small block with 2 water pipes attached. It is possible that the cooler...

The rain sensor appears to have stopped working on my 306. When I put switch the wiper stalk to the auto position, the wipers do work, but with the same intermitent delay, irrespective of squirting water directly on the sensor.

When looking at the sensor through the windscreen, there is a orange light on the left hand side which I guess means the...

check where sensor fits the screen,if it defaults every 4.5 seconds this could be the problem,if screen is cracked across sensor the light prism bounce off the crack default is then 4.5 sec ,also check on sensor should be 2 gel pads in sensor,if had screen change these can stick on the old screen

Hi,

My 306 makes a noise (clonk) when a brake.
It only does it when moving (will not make the noise when pressing the brake pedal whilst stationary).
I have checked for play in the ball joints etc but cant find any, the brake calipers appear to be secure as well.
Does any one know if this is one of the many common problems and if so what could be...

I'd start by checking the wiring behind the door switch, unless this is a multiplex car, in which case, I'd trace the wiring anyway and you'll probably find it goes into an ecu - check this for water ingress.

Going up in the world, just bought a P reg 406 LX 2.1TD with Aircon ( just ready for winter :lol: ). However, it does have a PAS leak, but then what's new, my current 405 does !

Hello.

Basically the car isn't running right at all. It takes ages for it to boost and when it does it doesn't exactly pull like it should!

Tonight on the way home I had my foot flat to the floor in 2nd gear and it took like 10 seconds to get to 45mph!

Any ideas?

The BE3 was used in most BXs and Xantias and to my knowledge also in 405s and 205s (and possibly 406 as well?).
There is also a BE1, which is easily distinguished from the 3 due to the location of reverse. Reverse on the BE3 is across to the right and down directly below 5th gear whilst the BE1 is across to the left, lift the ring under the knob...
