Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

i've got a phase 1 1.4 diesel 106, which seems to have creaky front brakes - not sure if its the linkage from the pedal to the servo or the callipers. the car stops fine and doesn't pull at all, anyone else had the same problems?

Ok some silly questions
How do i work out what colour my car is? Its red but what shade? can the vin/chassis no tell me ? The vs just says red and I have seen a few differnet colour reds other then mine.

The car is a 99 1.9td estate, how does it differ from say a 1998 or a 2000 yr estate? eg is it a mk1 mk 2 etc or are all 406 estates the same...

If its a 1.9TD its a mk 1.Mk 2 s came with the HDI,honeycombe/mesh front grill & clear plastic headlamps.As far as i know,or seen,most panels & the rear lights look the same.Not sure about front wings. :)

What is it with me & airbag lights?? :evil: After all my troubles with my Xantia,now the airbag light is coming on on my 406 :x .Its only just over 3 yrs old!! :x .

The brakes seem very sharp (way sharper then my last car a pug 405 1.9td) and they feel like they are pulsing and the steering wheel shuders when breaking. Especially noticable when breaking hard but still present when breaking gently!
Im guessing its just the discs and pads need changing at the front any body any other possible causes?

Does sound like the disks are worn out or warped,hence the shudder.More noticable when braking hard as theresmore heat generated.My Xantia used to get through a set of disks every year,as they would get to hot & warp.Did`nt matter what make of disks i got,they all did it.

I don't know how, I am assuming something caught either the throttle cable or my feet, but I managed to red line my previously well respected 2.1td (in my 96 605). It decided to shut itself down, and eventually let me restart it! With clouds of what I assume was unburnt diesel covering the road!

does anybody have the routine for fault reading the codes on a 205 XU5 engine with Magneti Marelli ECU. I've tried one routine on AussieFrogs but it didnt work. Thanks.

Well found the blue and black connectors under the expansion bottle, and gave them a clean. The heater plug did have some corrosion on the terminals.

Left the battery off for 1/2 hour and connected the light was still on, 100 meters down the road out it went, so took for a 20 mile drive and its stayed off ... watch this space.....

Just trying to on line order an exhaust for my daughters 306. Now it gives me a choice of a couple of different systems.

The car is a 1999 306 LX hatch-back 1360cc

Chassis no VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

My question is, is it a TU2JP or TU3JP Engine??

Junior has stopped driving me up the wall. I have found her problem (I hope!)

She has very tight valve clearances, especially on the inlet side. The minimum clearanace should be 0.10mm and the tighest (cold) is 0.02mm and the best is 0.075mm.

A cam out job this but not as bad as it sounds. The BoL for once does the task quite well really and if you are careful you don't need to take the cambelt right off. Depending on the model, you can sometimes even escape the task of removing the cam sproket on the camshaft too. I pulled the 205 cam out complete with cam sprocket and PAS/vacuum pup...

Hi Gents

Mrs owns r reg 106 1.5diesel and her brakes seem spongy and need longer braking distance Garage at my request looked at em and said no problems with em, they seem to think brakes are designed for 1.1 106 and werent upgraded for the extra weight etc of the diesel.

Being a 106 Diesel owner the brakes seem to be classic cheap french.
Not brilliant but more than up to the job of pulling the thing up.
All the diesels use a 4 stud disk in either Vented or Soild, Ate or Girling (IIRC) Calipers. I seem to remember the disks are the same as the 1.4 petrol versions, but I'm not 100% sure, you'd need to look it up....

Hi, 1997 405 TD saloon. There is water in the front footwell when I park on my drive. Yes, water will find its lower level to that lowest point but where is it coming from?

Alright

2003 TU3JP Pug 206 with front disc / rear drum set up, Teves ABS, EBD & EBA system, Also with ATE brake servo.

Problem is, 99.9% of the time the brakes work fine.

Its that 0.1% of the time you press the pedal & its gone rock hard.

Got a call from a friend tonight who's having problems with her 405.....

Starts and runs fine, but as soon as you dip the clutch the revs drop and the engine dies.

Any ideas before i go and look at it tomorrow armed with code readers and the likes?!

All i know about it (at the moment) is it's a 1995 petrol model

Think it's sorted now.
Went down armed with autodata and the fault code readers.
Water level was proper low so i'm guessing the water wasn't reaching the ECT sensor and causing the revs to hunt.
Cleaned out the air filter which was choked with hay (horsey woman), cleaned the TB with some carb cleaner and all seems well.

No fault codes registered...

Hi,
I have acquired a 306xsi which has failed it's MOT on emissions.

I want to get this going by myself, without resorting to a garage, so I need some advice.

Initially I intend to change the plugs, pour some injector cleaner in and take it for a thrash on a local private road, late at night.

If that doesn't help, what else should I look at?...

Ok. Been driving round in cicrles on full lock, and no oval wheels. There was no vibration, no knocking. The car is still vibrating at varying speeds around the 65 mph mark.

I am trying to tell and I think the vibratuion is constant once it starts. In that as I get quicker, other than reducing, the vibration doesn't get quicker with speed....

I will be looking at my mechanic for advice on the possible cause of vibration. I'll direct him to the inboard CVs first.

I have another recent topic regarding my vibration and tyre wear problem.

I have had all 4 tyres replaced and balanced. I have had 4 wheel lazer tracking (not the hangers on the rear wheels) which adjusted both the front AND REAR tracking.

Currently the front tyres, show no wear after 500+ miles. Rear tyres are new since monday and not showing...

Its taken a while to find the time and place to drive round in circles! But I managed it.. and my wheels all seem round! What I mean to say is that there was no knocking or vibration when on full lock, in either direction.

I noticed a little movement when just off lock, but I wasn't in a position to perform and larger circles.

I'm in the process of changing the engine on a 205 1.1 (TU Engine).

The Haynes book mentions disconnecting the fuel return pipe but there isn't one on the original engine or even on the car as far as I can tell. The original engine used an in line fuel filter with the output of the fuel pump direct to the carb.

Standard car mechanical fuel pumps dont deliver more than approx 0.25bar fuel pressure. Easy for the float needle valve to withstand.

You will find that the return fuel stud on the carb is directly connected to the fuel inlet stud on the carb. Only a small fine gauze mesh filter is found between the 2 pipe ports.

I want to check the Lucas injection pump on Junior is correctly timed.

To do this you need a Dial Test Indicator (DTI) and a special timing pin that slips into the pump and must rise a given distance on No.4 TDC. The actual distance can be found on a label on the pump.

I turned up the special pin to the dimensions shown in the BoL and then set...

hi all, a friends TD has a heater which is lukewarm at best ..
I had a quick look tonight and noticed the following

car full of coolant
heater control does make car go from cold - warm (not hot)
Pipe into center of bulkhead are very hot
bleed nipple situated near those pipes expels no air, just hot coolant.

Can someone help me with the removal of the Peugeot 307 hdi (2002) fuel filter. I find it very difficult to remove the top screwed section without damaging the bottom housing. The screwed top has to be removed to gain access to the filter inside.The complete unit is made of plastic and easily breaks with force. I dont want to be in a position...

It appears it was the matrix in the end.

A replacement has been ordered. I didn't realise they were so cheap at €60. Autodata shows the labour time to be 4.8 hours to get the dash off and back on again, so that's gonna be the expensive part.

If it was my van I'd get a BOL and have a bash at it myself, but it isn't mine...

Don't know if anybody can advise me but the instrument lights have stopped working on my 306xrdt, it's a 1996 and doesn't seem to have the rheostat that some pugs have, there are no lights at all so i can't see any of the guages in the dark--i've checked the fuses but don't know where to look next-any ideas?

My 96 605 2.1td is steadily drainign me of any money and interest in it! I have spent even more money on basic maintenance include £260 for a clutch replacement and a nice set of tyres for the front.

How ever, they tyres have been completely warn down on the out side circumferance of the tread. The tracking was done and found to be way out....

Ok time for an update.

Front tyres, no wear after 500+ miles. Rear tyres new and not showing any deterioration.

Had it tracked on a 4 wheel alignment machine, NOT the hangers on the back wheel machine! I want to get it done again, but it shouldn't have changed in the last week (unless there is somethign majorly wrong!)

Anybody have access to search the Peugeot dealer network? looking for an engine assembly 0139.11. XD2 engine. Wondering if there is any stock in the UK before I stick my neck out and think about ordering my 504 a new lump!

can anyone tell me where the coolant drain plug is on a 106 i have had a look round the radiator but cannot see it.
i need to drain coolant so that i can renew the antifreeze.

As far as I can remember you do indeed pull off the bottom hose. Drain plugs can easily get damaged, especially if they are mounted in plastic. Also any large sludge gets stuck in the hole.

If your doing a complete drain and refill, be sure to use a header tank attachment. I would use ready mixed 'green' coloured coolant too like Coma Coldstream,...

I've just bought a '98 406 1.8L Estate, and I have a few questions.

It's making a knocking (almost certainly from the back end) as I go over bumps, i've had the front and back up in the air and I can't see anything loose or worn. Any ideas? If it is the rear tie bars, what's the best way the check this?

Our 205D has been difficult to start in the cold although as soon as it is warmer it is fine. Glowplugs are what is causing it...

The engine has a set of known good 1.9TD glowplugs in it. I note that GSF specify two entirely different BERU part numbers for the 1.7D and 1.9TD glowplugs.

Just a little update..

I put a set of GV636 plugs in and all is now OK. I did a silly thing though. In reconnecting No.1 glowplug, the termainal got a little close to the body of the waxstat and over the course of a few days the insulation on it chafed through and caused a short-circuit. :oops:

Starts on the button now...

I am starting to look at new tyres for the 405, looking at National tyres website, they reckon that I should be using either 175/70 or 185/65. When I got the car it had a mix of 175/75s and 180/60s ( I think) I replaced them with 185/65s as it says on the door.

Hi - having fixed a leaky rubber hose to the heater matrix, the water pump is now continually leaking. Water is coming from behind the cog/pulley, so I wonder if it is the bearing seal that has gone.

At £18 for a new pump I guess replacement is the best fix = BUT it is driven by the timing belt!

My 1994 L reg Peugeot 205 Junior Auto with the 1580cc carb engine and slugomatic box has what I think is an electrical fault. The low coolant light stays on all the time. It does go dim and brighter in time with the indicators. The coolant level is correct and it hasnt used any, the rad gets hot all over and the electric cooling fans kick in ok....

been tinkering all day with the little pug. Got the cable off the sensor and connected so it shorted, and on came another light....the low coolant light. The ol' girl has hit the 107k mark and is feeling floaty she had new rear bushes about 6 months ago all i could afford at the time.

The original shox arent leaking but should they be changed due to the mileage? Any other advice on components that require changing would be welcome.

The fronts are harder than the rears.You would have to femove the suspension strut,which meens disconecting the brakes,driveshafts & anti roll bars etc.Its not a major job,proberly an hour to remove the whole lot if it all comes off ok.The hardest part is commpressing the springs,to be able to undo & remove the shocks.Most spring compressor tools...

Well,had my car re-mapped today.What a difference :D :lol: :o
Its so much more responsive,faster through the gears,& acording to the fuel computer,average mpg went from 38.8 mpg on the way there,to 44.6 mpg on the way home,even with a heavy right foot :lol: .
Even managed to get the front wheels to screech when changing into 2nd gear,in the dry...

Another question my 205, as this is the first auto I have owned. Its got 64k on the clock with FSH. I changed the tranny fluid as it was rather brown looking with the rest of the service, filling with Dexron II as per handbook. Everything is ok, but the bright red new fluid is dull already. I read in the book of lies that it takes over 6L to fill...

thanks pazz. I will change the fluid again soon, it was an easy job. My box works well, there is sometimes a little clonk/snatch as it drops in to I think first if you pull up quick to a junction, not all the time though. Perhaps the next couple of fluid changes will sort it.

If this is the same as some of the older models, then dealers use two thin metal hooks which slide in between the radio and facia. These unlock the clips and slide it out. I called in to a dealer who nipped out and did it free on a 106.

Posting this on the Citroen section as the part I'm asking about is stamped Citroen/Peugeot/Talbot, and you Cit folk seem very helpfull!

The part is on my 205 Auto (1580cc 1993 RHD), and sits under the passenger wing in front of the wheel. Its a cylinder canister with two pipes going in to it, with what looks like a smaller plastic filter inline...

Hi -

I believe its the charcoal canister - which is part of the antipollution system fitted to later cars.
I have no idea if these systems are shared on certain cross-PSA models being an original Citroen part number.
However its wellknown that BX16/19 and 205-16/19 shares the same engine parts.
Good to know before you enter the breakyards.
