Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Um, yes, a few thoughts.
1) The rears discs are actually Xantia ones, and not BX ones sold as Xantia by some Motor factors? The Bx ones are slightly smaller but fit!!
2) The rear pads. Most folk including our own Dave Burns would swear by Bendix or Textar for the rears to prevent squealing.
What I do when doing Xantia rear brakes is to deglaze the...

About 3 months ago I changed the rear discs and pads on the Xantia - the other discs were paper thin and heavily corroded on the edge, and the pads were slightly unevenly worn around the top edge.
Did the job as per Haynes but the workshop I used didn't have any Copper Ease so being in a rush I put them back in without and drove round for a few...

Cant really say could be the head gasket leaking oil, camshaft oil seal, crank oil seal, rocker cover gasket. Depends where about it is on the back of the engine.

2nd hand engine probably about £200 - £300 - condition will be unknown. It's about 8-10 hours work to change it, so that's at least £160 even at a cheapo place. Add in a new clutch (£100 parts, minimal fitting if the engine is out), timing belt, various fluids (say £50) and the Government's share, and you're going to be lucky to get any change out...

If you can, have the engine running, as this will provide vacuum for the brake servo - otherwise you will need new underpants the first time you try to stop!!
Now, you (the rear car) need to provide most of the braking for the train - so you might need to arrange a signal with your mate he can give you when he wants you to slow down - I...

Try have a look where the throttle cable attaches to the throttle axle - it may have started to split/unwind - causing it to bind. Which means you should expect it to snap soon - leaving you w/o any throttle/power

What about when you go round a corner, does it get worse in one direction that the other.
Is it a constant knock when it appears or is it a bit hit and miss.
I would have said it was a goosed wheel bearing and it probably is, the doubt if any comes about when you say it dissapears under breaking, thats a bit odd beacuse braking ought to produce...

My 94 Xantia TD has developed a knocking noise localised to the front passenger side wheel area. The knocking noise frequency increases with road speed, however disappears on acceleration, and reappears when i back off. It also disappears under braking.
Do these symptoms ring any bells?

Anybody out there have a clue what the doseur valve leakage should be when new? Mine has still a slight leakback to the reservoir when engine idling, despite being only 500 miles old so I would assume that it is ok but I'm a little puzzled because I would have expected to see no leakage at all. I'd guess it is about 5cc per minute at present.

Well there is a section on this Forum called Common problems and fixes . Some time ago myself and Alan S collected the best of the most common problems and placed them in this section. Problem was that people started posting queries as to why their car would not start etc etc in this section so I ended up moving/deleting the posts then locking...

I believe there are 3 separate faults here:
1. Rear sinking on engine start is usually down to the rear anti-sink sphere being flat. This sphere is located in the centre at the rear of the car.
2. Suspension running at max is usually down to the plastic link between the anti-roll bar and height corrector failing. It may be possible to re-locate...

What is a LDV Pilot ?
My Citroen BX19 diesel is powered by a XUD9 - and this model is also available with a ZF4hp autobox - but for front wheel drive only.

Its worht remmebering the VTR is a lot lighter than the car u just got, diferent gear ratios etc. not sure about the clutch

ZX 2.0 16v that is. I sold a Saxo VTR (Black,lowered, Magnex, PiperX low mileage, etc.) to Citroen, got absolutely ripped off by the Citroen Dealer they gave me £4000 put it on the forecourt for £6295 , this was after the salesperson told me he'd put it up for about £5000-£5495.They have to make a profit, but £2295!!!! Thats over a third more....

On the BX PAS pinion control valve - there are 2 simple O-rings internally - and 2 lipped oilseals.
The one lipped oilseal is just under the dust cover on the splined stubaxle. Both this oilseal and the nearest O-ring seal must be leaking to your description.
The other lipped oilseal is located in the bottom of the valve - and seals...

You are indeed in the right area m'lud, it faces the front and is below and rearward of the clutch release arm, and yes the plastic tray does obscure it.

I have been looking for the reverse lamp switch on the gearbox on my 96 Xantia VSX 16v 2.0i manual box, without success; could anyone confirm the location of this switch, am I correct in assuming it lurks beneath the plastic shroud on the top of the gearbox or am I looking in totally the wrong place?

New spheres + hard ride = suspect air in suspension - try Citaerobics.
No ABS + seemingly ABS function on pedal = suspect air in the brake lines too - try bleed the brakes.
With continuing air problems - suspect leaking pump's feed hose from reservoir.

I've recently bought a 95/M Xantia 1.9TD LX to replace a 94/M 2.0i SX for commuting. Unfortunately I've hit problems almost immediately - and not the same ones as the other car!
First, the coolant teperature. The needle seems to vary between 70 and 90 degrees depending on operating conditions - I see 90 in traffic jams, but usually around 75 to 80...

this is usually likely to mean that the bolt is corroded in but you have only recently had them fitted. If they are not new bolts, (And that is not a reccommendation, that's a necessity) then the job has been bodged. The bolts are designed to stretch when correctly torqued down. I won't speculate on damage, but there ought to be washers under the...

I am having a huge problem removing the headbolts form my zx volcane td. The last owner has made a bad job of a headgasket change - exhaust and inlet manifolds were both leaking at the gaskets, but the worst is the sheer force that holds these headbolts in!!!
I have so far snapped 3 torq bits, one ratchet and one chrome vanadium extension...

No matter what the problem actually might be - have it digged into ASAP.
It's well known that cooling problems are the most sure killers to the PSA type XU diesel engines (like yours).
Alarming indications are the short time engine temp warning light - and the fact that imposing extra cooling by turning up the heat - helps on the...

My ’98 Xantia 1.9TD has a problem, I believe, with the cooling system. The temperature gauge rises to normal operating temp just under 80. Sometimes at this temperature or even prior to it, the cooling fan can kick in. Usually this can be accompanied by the warning light in the temp gauge and the STOP light illuminating.

All engines have some means of venting the oil sump into the air intake. It's an environmental issue - and also to prevent the bypass combustion pressure building up pressure in the sump - making the oil-dipstick hole an oil geyser.
This may also happen if oil/water fume mix (mayonnaise) freeze during wintertime.

I've read of complaints that the oil vapour dirties the air intake hoses and intercooler into the turbo, rendering them less effective. I guess it's not normal behaviour - but may be common to a lesser extent on most cars.
The reason is that with engine running - the alternator is also running & charging - providing a higher operating battery voltage.

Neil -
If you have done hundreds of brake pads on other cars - I'm sure you'll find the Xantia a no-problem to service. It's very straightforward.
The handbrake construction is made such that no service adjustment is necessary - and does not affect the brake service.
In fact the construction may be seen as an extra means moving the front brakes...

Have you checked the thermostat in a pan of water? Is the rad cap OK? Have you bled the system correctly of air? Is the ignition timing spot on?

Hi Guys ,
Need some serious help here. Have the above car which keeps on running very hot and sometimes overheats if you dont keep an eye on the water.
Have no leaks whatsoever , new water pump , new head gasket , new rad , cannot find any blockages in the water system . Electric fan works and stays on constant once on . Thermostat ok....

Your XM 2.1 is probably the same as my 2.1 Xantia. If you've done any XUD cambelt, you'll find the 2.1 similar. There's a bit more to remove on the top mounting - all the support from the inner wing has to come off otherwise you won't get the front cover off. I don't know about the '97 model, but on my 94 and 95 cars you don't have to unscrew the 4 screws on the heater control box - the bulbs can be replaced with the box in situ. Just carefully prise the black cover off with a small screwdriver.

youll probably find it needs a new glass or switch,it just opens in the same way as the tailgate by pressing the black switch under the wiper arm.take it back to the dealer for them to check out.

My BX 16V has developed a very similar fault - most of the time it's fine, other times it'll just click at you until after repeated attempts it'll usually turn over. Seems to be worse when the engine is hot through heat soak after standing a short time.

the wiring goes via a multiway connector under the passenger footwell carpet. My interior lights started behaving v. badly when the footwell flooded. I doubt thats your problem with all the recent dry weather but it is a common fault with the windscreen scuttle seal.

I could be wrong, but I'm not convinced a fog light is an MOT failure point.
Do you mean front or rear?
If you want, I can find out but not until Monday when I get back to work. Surely the MOT checks obligatory lights. Front fogs are optional, not obligatory!

I've had a VSX since 1995 which came with alloys. The handling will be better as you will have to fit low profile tyres to get the same rolling radius. I've driven a couple and they're a real rocket of a car. Best in Mk2 form with wider track and stiffer suspension. They do need to pushed along though, like most 16v engines they don't come alive until 3500RPM.

Top up your LHM........
Its running low on LHM and under braking and cornering it will slosh around in the reservoir causing the level to fall around the sensor. Give it 1/2 litre into the reservoir and the flickering will go away.

afaik the catted 1.9 ally bx 16v engine put out 148bhp, non-cat was 160. The 405 mi16 was never sold with the 1.9 cat, it went to the 2 litre iron block in 1993.
the 1998 in the zx 16v/306 s16/mk2 405 mi16's puts out 155 with a cat. You would expect it to maybe be low 160's decatted but I dont know if the ecu would need remapping etc. It is a far...

Oil level low warning. Known not to work very well, so use the good old fashioned dip stick and ignore the light! Mine does this also and I was wondering about disconnecting the sensor, but do not know if that will just bring it on permanently - anybody else?

Might be the throttle body - or throttle potientiometer. A flat device at end of the butterfly/throttle axle. Similar in function to your stereo's volume control - the older species.
When these wear out - the ECU gets a wrong signal - but still reacts to it as being a working signal - hence no fault codes.

Thanks to all who replied to my last post regarding the trouble i was having with the hot starting of my 110k mile ZX diesel. Now its developed, after replacing the fuel filter, checking all the lines, replacing the battery (it wouldnt have lasted winter anyway) its developed!
