Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Normally, the stop light DOES go out very quickly on a healthy hydraulic system - so there's no need to worry!

Sounds like theres a problem somewhere, I doubt that its normal practice to use block repairing goo unless theyre trying to seal a leak somewhere, did the same garage do the work?

There is no choke on a diesel for idle mix.
Instead you have the coldstart device which slightly offsets the injection timing at cold idle. This is the rather clumpsy cylindric device in thermostat housing with a bowden cable connecting to the roto pump.
With cold engine this cable attachment is adjusted against endstop. You can then mark up...

You will need to 'crack' (loosen) the rears (the ones on each suspension strut) with the system pressurised and the suspension on the highest setting. Obviously with something to prevent the car dropping on your head. If you try to do it with the system depresurised you run the risk of twisting the while suspension strut round and snapping the...

Sounds about right, would be easiest with complete rear of car securely supported, not just at one side.
Only tip I can think of for this job would be to WD40 both ends of the old pipe, then cut through old pipe with side cutters at either end where the nut is, you will then be able to hammer on an 8mm 1/4 drive socket (must be the type with...

Hi retic -
What's the mileage of this Xantia ? - as that would be a pointer to any clutch problems.
Bouncing suspension is a pointer to near-flat spheres.
The reluctance of height change on rear suspension is likely to be a missing (broken) plastic link to the HC - or might just have unhooked one end.
LHM level seems fine - the float is quite easy...

Get your yellow pages out and look for a Bosch electronic factors. Had the MAP sensor fail on my Xsara VTR and Citroen quoted me in the 100's for a new part but Bosch who made the part were charging only £65 inc vat. Other then that try to remove it and give it a clean. Not sure how they are on Xantia's but on the Xsara they were a unit about the...

I think I've got a dodgy MAP sensor on my '98 Xantia 1.8 16v. The engine runs fine, but every now and then it will just lose all power for a few seconds and then kick back in again.

What engine has your Xantia got? If the temp fluctuates between 70 and 80 then it's odds on the thermostat is knackered - it should sit at a steady 80°C, only rising when you work it hard or sit in traffic. If it falls below that, then the thermostat is not working properly. A coolant change...

There are only two ways;
1) Fit new bearings;
2) Press the old ones out and reuse them.
It is possible to press them out but there is a better than average chance the bearings will be fcuked by removal.
When I replaced my drums I bought bearings as well simply because I couldn't be bothered to risk finding out that the old bearings were knackered...

You need a new alternator belt.
Try remove the belt and run the engine shortly w/o alternator - to trace any other cause for the squeeling.

If the sender makes the gauge drop noticeable after just a few miles - then I'd suspect the sender unit.
The sender unit should be the same from a 1.4 petrol - can't see why these should be different for different fuel types.

Our R reg ZX1.9TD fuelsender is giving false readings. When the tank is filled to the brim it shows full for a few miles and then drops down to 3/4 mark.
Whats the best test for this?
If needed I have a K reg 1.4 petrol ZX which I assume has the same fuelsender in the tank?????????
I know that one is working so is it worth a swap???

It's a common problem on the bx I'm afraid. The struts are showing their age and have worn. The only proper solution is to rebuild or replace with new (or known good used) units. Some people claim to have extended the life of the struts by squirting LHM down the inspection hole but it did not work on my car. If its only just started you have some...

Coil packs, theres a coil for each plug on this version of the 16v. It doesn't have Ht leads.

I recently replaced a bulb on climate controls on my Xantia. It was 1.2 W, integrated plastic bulbholder with 6mm hexagonal head (didn't see this type before).

i think these cracks are normal on the xud and doubt that they would effect your cooling system. i think they are trying to milk more money out of you. Dave burns will know more about this than me.

Have just had the word from the engineers pressure testing my ZX1.9D head, who say that there are cracks in one or more of the pre-combustion chambers, and it was this that was causing my cooling system to be pressurised.
Being formerly a petrol-only DIY-er, this is new to me, but I'm advised it is fatal. Is this true? Could they be mistaken?...

Normally I'd say accumulator sphere and if thats ok then the non-return valve on the regulator needs re-seating. (I'm sure instructions are given somewhere for this operation.)
The normal behaviour on full heeight has me baffled. My initial reaction is height controllers or struts and I think it must be the height controller as the front struts...

I read this years ago. All thats needed is to pull the clips off at either side of the filter. Then replace the new filter. There is no bleeding required.

the ones i've seen are nothing more than a resistor that wires in to the temp sensor/air flow meter
to kid the management system into thinking the engine is running cooler than it is
20bhp is a stupid claim
maybe what it should read is
stupid mod for your car
upto 20mpg less than you are doing now
engine worn out in 2-3 weeks due to all...

No it wont have an ECU at that age, plus the ECU model has three electrical connetions to the injection pump, these being the immobiliser (black), electronic timing control (brown) and throttle lever position potentiometer (blue).
The bit you are looking at sounds like the ABS unit.

The new (to me) Xantia VSX TD doesn't have the fast idle cable i'm used to, but the pump (Bosch, I think) has 2 electrical connections. ONe will be the shut-off solenoid; is the other one the ECU'able bit? There's a ECU-looking thing behind the engine bay relays (under the cover) - is this it?

I have the same stereo as yours. Clarion 2030. As the other units are manufactured by Blaupunkt it has a different way of CODE entry.

Hi
I'd start by checking the radiator. If you ZX hasn't had a new rad already, its probably due for one! Check for leaks/corrosion along the bottom of the rad. Also, with the car hot, ensure that all of the rad gets hot, if its cold along the bottom then its silted up and needs replacing or very severe flushing.
If all checks out OK, then drain...

If its not dampers the other thing it could be is bottom balljoints, when these go they usually lead to vagueness, particularly over bumps, white lines, etc....jack the front end so they aren't under load and check for play with a crowbar.

Hydractive 2 (HA2) systems was introduced with the arrival of the Xantia models - which is later than your XM. So your system is HA1.
The main difference between these 2 generations of the sophisticated hydraulic suspension - is how/when the computer controls the sport (hard) mode.
I suspect you have the common problem with the rear height...

Errrhh... how old is the car - year model ?
- as you can have both aging & wear related problems.
It bleeding the fuel system seems to make it a fine hot starter - then this is quite sure the clue to the problem - very common problem on diesels.

I've had very good results from Duckhams Diesel QXR. My ZX runs the same on that as it does on Duckhams Fully synthetic, both give a much smoother feeling engine than running on mineral oils. I bought a LOT of mis-priced 1l bottles of both (£1.88 a litre for either), but if I was paying retail, I don't think the fully synthetic is worth double the...

Apparently the stretch type bolts can be used twice, and should be pop marked to indicate when they have, considering the price of a set I have never found this worthwhile, its best to follow the tightening sequence from BOL but make sure ist a late version not involving running the engine between steps.

Well, I've read a couple of other threads on the board relating to odd-sized head bolts being found in ZX engines, and with the luck I've had with my ZX I guess I shouldn't be surprised to find that the ones in mine bear no relation at all to the two types which Haynes list.
The bolts sit on 3mm washers - no spacers, and are just 112mm in length....

I'd definately first try the accumulator sphere - down on front of engine block.
If that does not cure the fast ticking - then we're facing serious talks with your Xantia.
In some cases the acc. sphere also affects the hydractive suspension - a further reason to take it step by step.

Any body know if the ZX front bumper should have a chrome or silver strip in it?. My rear bumper has a chrome strip (plastic) but the front dosen't. It's the Avantage TD model. I've seen this stick on strip in some auto factors but was wondering is this the right thing?

Still no oil leaks. Gave it a jet wash at work the other day under the engine where all the old s**t had gathered. Washed off all the old oil it's bone dry no leaks at all. Is some thing wrong????

It's been three whole weeks since fitting the new oil filler and there's still NO OIL LEAKS under the ZX td. I may even leave parked on the drive for the first time since August 03. Even the wifes happy. So far all is good and calm in the ZX house. No problems all quite.

Just because the oil is fine doesn't mean that the head gasket is fine...
Could be a number of things; leaking radiator/expansion cap, even cracked/porous head!
You could have a fine split somewhere such that it only leaks when hot; by the time it's all cooled down the leak has evaporated!
How much coolant are you losing? A litre per week, or a...

As I understand it the stepper motor got at least 2 stator windings & a rotor winding.
If not - it would'nt be a stepper motor - but simply a motor.
I'd expect in the vicinity of (maybe a couple) 100 ohms. Obviously not shorted or disrupted.
I suspect these motors fails by dirt in their mechanicals - making them stick.

Not all the diesels are turbocharged, in fact most ZX's aren't. They are all 1.9's though.
The ZX comes in both 3 and 5 door versions (as well as a 5 door estate).
Not all comes with ABS; don't know about Airbags.
Some of the ZX owners can be more helpful here; for common faults I think there's problems with the rear beam bushes and brake hoses,...

Hi Foxy,
I suggest you take the carpet out and dry it.
Wipe the whole area with an old towel to get it dry, and look for any areas that seem indicated.
Put down some dry newspaper.
Use the garden hose or a watering can to pour some water over the roof near the back for a couple of mins.
Check for leaks.
Spray water at the back
Check for leaks....
