Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Spent all day on the ZX TD today.
Clutch job went without any snags at all, even the (always) siezed in roll pin on the clutch arm tapped out fine! Picked up a handy tip from Doug at Louis Barbour's. The ZX TD box is always tight to get out and the bottom RH diff housing (the bit that sticks out where the RH driveshaft and speedo drive live)always...

The aircon on my 2.1 Xantia works fine. When its switched on, it blows cold in just a few minutes and both radiator fans start up at low speed. But shouldn't the tickover speed also increase? It doesn't - it just stays the same. Also, even from a cold start, tick over is still only around 750rpm. Is there a fault?

I'm looking for a drivers door wing mirror for a CX, the type that wasn't squarish (leter models?). I actually need the black trim which has been knocked off by some car driving too close but will buy the entire mirror if someone doesn't want to split the item. Spheres a little flat?

Hi Guys,
Is it normal for XM to have a rather harsh ride over small and sharp bumps like speed strips, etc.
My 1990 XM 2.0i is comfortable, if a little floaty at high speed (I stick the suspension to soft mode permanently by adjusting the electrovalve) but over small bumps, it is noisy and rather harsh.
Any advice what can I do to rectify this...

It sounds like an oil pressure related problem, as the oil pressure switch is used to test all those lights at start up. With the lights on, pull the cable off the switch and then ground it, and they should go out. Without access to an oil pressure gauge you're going to have to change the switch to a known good one to eliminate that. If you still...

I did an LHM change/filter clean in the Xantia '94 VSX.
Everything went well until I reassembled and started. Car raised very quickly; I set it to the highest setting, then the lowest and then the highest again in quick succession.
When I set it back onto the highest, it started fluttering the warning lights at me and the buzzer was keeping time...

Without going through loads of hydraulic theory, change the the rear centre and front sphere on engine block. Do the citerobics, up down up down several times with the footy on the radio and see where you get with it. The car is the right age for the those two spheres to be more than ready for replacement. Caution with the rear centre sphere,...

but heres my tuppence worth. The clutch definetely sounds knackered
I would be inclined to get a new cable when you are changing the clutch. I had problem with clutch cables in my BX were the whole pedal area was cracking because of the pressure being exerted by wrecked clutch. Xantias operate differently...

My 94 Xantia has had a Hydraflush and new spheres, and new tyres. Yet its still uncomfortable (Most of the time).
When i go over a bump it seems to bounce all over rather than a smooth bump. The slightest small hole in the road and it handles it worse than normal spring cars.
Sometimes putting it into the 3rd up height setting then putting it back...

Rough guess is that the hydractive suspension is staying in fully soft mode for some reason; it should get gradually harder the faster you get. Perhaps one of the sensors which kicks it into soft mode is overridng something, or the speed sensor is misbehaving?

Your best bet is to visit a breakers yard and obtain a secondhand hub, from experience many so called mechanics go insane once they get their hands on an air wrench.

I was changing brake pads on my ZX when I discovered that one of the lug nuts of the right rear tyre has the thread damaged. I replaced it and found out that also the hole in the rear hub has a damaged thread. WIth the help of hand taps, I repaired the thread but apparently it's to damaged because it failed again.

Okay first thing is to admit I have no experience of the Activa, but I remeber a conversation with a mechanic who mentioned he frequently worked on lop-sided Activas so if this makes any sense:
It's possible that one of the rams is partially seized and a possible cure is simply to clean with WD40 the anchor point/bar. Apparently it should slide...

Yes, a heavy oil leak will fail the MOT (danger to other road users), but most garages will just draw your attention to it.

Are you using the TRX Metric wheels or the 14 standard ones?
The Metric Turbo wheels have 210/215 as standard but the 14 only use 195's I know people who have fitted 205 section on the 14's but any bigger i think will cause problems.

andyspares has different part numbers to the manufacurers (obviously)
the spheres you need are N45332 on the front and N45366 on the back. order through the links on the home page. you can also download the catalogue there.

I doubt the I on the v5 document has anything to do with the engine being carb'ed or injected.
Rather I think it may refer to the model series 1 (one) as being the first model/type XM.
If you're not technical minded, it's a bit hard to help you here, as you'd have to make some visual technical checks to be sure.

This may sound a bit obvious, but is there a circlip, a.k.a. bearing retaining clip or the remains of one, on the gearbox side? I don't know about the ZX, but there is on the BX, and on many other cars, too, and they are not always easy to see.

Got the hub off the car, put it in the press. Pressed out the hub itself, now still got the bearing inside the carrier. Put it in the press, and will it budge? Will it heck!! Im trying to press it out the 'back' of the hub, there look sto be a lip the other side preventing the...

New cars must pass an MOT after 3 years, then they have to retested every year, regardless of mileage. The regs have got much tighter over the last few years, and we are promised (ha ha!) computerised systems any time soon, so testers will be able to see what it failed on before, and any advisories, so they can pay 'special attention' to...

How often do you guys in the U.K. require an MOT? I have 3 cars in N.Z. none of which do a very high mileage as I try to share the use among them. Regardless of miles travelled they must have a Warrant of Fitness (safety check - about $45 - 16 pounds in your money) every 6 months. My dad has a ZX (as do I) with a problem with the brake fluid light.
We know its the same light as for the hand brake, but when going down a steep hill (incidentally with a full load of adults in the back) the light would come on. At the bottom of the hill it would flicker on and off and then go out, which indicates to me a fluid sensor...

The clutch on 4-cylinder XM's can be changed without removing the gearbox completely, so it shouldn't cost more than any other car of a similar size.

Have they always been like that??Could the ride height be droping a bit at the back??
If not,somewhere behind/on top of the lights under the bonnet will be 2 screws.1 adjusts lights up/down,the other left/right.The best thing is to park on the level in front of a wall,or garage door,and just adjust them down.You will see the beams move on the wall...

The headlights on my xantia don't appear to give much illumination on the road. They appear to be aimmed too far in front of the car, but I'm not sure if its a simple job to adjust them, or its there's another way to realign then.....

hi, I would check the wiring where it connect to the switch, my front offside did the same and I pushed the connector back into the door switch, worked great after.

Double check the Heated rear window works, if not, it could be the ignition switch.Also could be the rheostat on the motor itself. Just another thought has it been leaking water into the NSF footwell at anytime? Its common for the scuttle panel to be split and water to enter the heater motor that way. Good luck

This isn't the first time I've come across nearly new Doseur failures. This is the fourth in a year. I suspect that the last ones were made on worn out tooling. Vexing, though isn't it?

After much tracing and diagnostic, I have to conclude that my brake doseur is the culprit for fast ticking. The return pipe is practically gushing LHM. I am under the impression that its the rear axle on some early production vehicles.Possible a new axle is needed but it depends when it was made.I belive that it also effects the front suspension set up, so a straight swop is not always possible. I have heard that they may put bigger wheels on to try and sort out this known problem on the early...

This might be of interest to anyone who owns a C8. Apparently there is a fault with the n/s rear tyre, as it wears unevenly, meaning it goes bald on the outside and stays nice and new on the inside.
They say they are still working on a fix which will may result in a recall or free modification during servicing, but the solution hasn’t yet been...

If the AX has the same inherant problems as the BX, could I suggest that you spray silicone release spray around the back of the speedo where the cable enters, use a screwdriver or similar to work it until it frees up properly and then secure the speedo cable so that it doesn't turn at right angles immediately after it leaves the speedo and...

I hope it's nothing serious - on our first Xantia (96 year), it kept falling out of gear and needed a new gearbox! I'm sure yours is nothing serious our 205 GTi's gear lever moves around like a spoon in some porridge!

I don't remember there being a box, just a knurled type connector. The cable comes from the back of the gearbox. Its quite a stiff cable and proper routing is essential or they flicker or break again. Sticky ISCV (Idle speed control valve) is the first bet; pull it off (not literally) and it'll probably be gunged up. Carburettor cleaner and a toothbrush will work wonders on it.

Does anyone know of a way to improve the rear lights on a Xantia. It's a '94 2.0 LX but the rear lights have that cloudy appearance. I don't know if there's a way to get them back to looking more respectable or if I'm gonna need to get some new lights to improve my back end (if you pardon the expression).

Sounds like you need a new hand primer as the non return valve on yours is not working. As for 'pot level' that I dont know..

bad starting in the morning, new heater plugs, still the same should the hand primer get hard after two or three pumps, mine stays soft all the time, return pipes from injectors the small plastic ones, one is leaking slightly, fuel filter housing when i took the top of this the fuel was only approximatley 1 third up the pot is this correct.

Leather was an option, and there are very few ZX's with it. The same goes for Aircon. You will probably have to search long and hard to find such a car.
You could try the retrofit route, some times specialist Citroen breakers like www.cit-ren.co.uk or www.edwardsandson.co.uk may have Leather interiors for sale. Aircon can also be retrofitted,...

Sump plug? Sump gasket? Rocker cover gasket? Leaking turbo oil feed pipe or oil return pipe? Headgasket? Cracked block or head?
Its most likely the sump gasket, you'll have to have a look at where the oil is actually coming from, bearing in mind that under bonnet air flow can move oil considerable distances...

After the obligatory glitch: (arrive home at midnight, run aircon electrics with the engine off to hear fans cut in before leaving at 6:30 to get gas. Zip. Nothing.)
A tweak on the pot mounting lugs where the slider wasn't being slid fixed that.
