Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Some bone head had stripped the thread of one of the wheel bolts on the drivers side front, so the mechanic had to re-tap the thred, half way through, his Snap-on re-threading tool decided to Snap-off! leaving one half in the hub. That ment a strip of the hub to have it drilled out,...

It's not like the car will immediately be damaged by this, but the suspension components in general may be overstressed when driving the car for long in highest setting.
I'd say the car must have been a nuisance - and rather dangerous - to drive, as it gets rock solid like a truck.

Today my MOT tester lowered one of my Xantia's suspension to the lowest level and now can't get it to rise again. I've had this problem before on another vehicle and fixed it by pushing the lever to the highest position, then returning it to the normal ride position. However, this doesn't seem to work this time.

SM will (Not might) bankrupt you and doesn't feel fast because it works so well.
Spares-no chance.
CX will drive you mad because it is so seductive but flimsy in every part of its engineering. All the quick ones are expensive to keep and will be well used.
DS: you'll always get your money back if you buy the right one. A 21 or 23 with aircon would...

I think the 406 manual covers the HDi engine, so Haynes thinks the Xantia manual doesn't need to.

Just type vegetable oil into the search at top right of screen, and you will be reading all night......it's a huge subject and the web is full of links on this, and everyone has a different opinion!!
Basically, oil is oil, and it does work and shouldn't do any harm, but to do it properly and all year round you need to rig some kind of heating...

I found that as tight as you can go with out going mental on a long bar is about right, if you don't have a torque wrench. This based on 17 stone fatty with deep deep deep pockets. Never had any probelms.

Think it may be held in by just the usual way. Or if any thing only a couple of screws. I'm lead to belive thoe that on some of the newer (now older) AX's you have to remove the ends of the unit to reveal the fixings.

Not really sure, could be the linkages with play in them. The ones in my 16v are shot along with my clutch. Bite point is on the floor and i barely managed to get it into any gear at junctions coming into work today, had to do all the other changes without using the clutch. Going to see if theres any more adjustment left in the cable at lunch :)

I reckon they have pressed the first new one in not quite squarely, forced it in anyway, and thereby damaged the bearing housing in the hub carrier; its then worn out in double quick time as it won't be running straight;quickly followed by its replacements as none of them will now sit square.
What its got to do with the driveshaft failing, though,...

I'd guess that you've got an obstruction somewhere, either in the pedal set or the clutch lever arm assembly.

About once in every 30 or so gear changes, I go to press the clutch peddle down and I can't. I have to lift off and try again.

Clutch release / pressure bearing. My old Zx had this noise and it lasted for 152K no problems. If you want it changing then best to have the whole clutch changed as well in one go. Could be result of resting your foot on clutch pedal, slipping the clutch when pulling away or pulling away in the wrong gear.

In the hatchback, it's near the tailgate lock. Look for a small white plastic tube, with a steel ball inside. Cleaning the inside of the switch will probably help.

My guess would be that you need to replace the centre, anti-sink sphere. You can do that independantly of the rear wheel spheres. If you decide to change it, undo the pipe union at the back of the sphere, before spinning off the sphere itself. Fail to undo the pipe union first, and you'll end up sheering the hydraulic pipe. Presumably you've read...

I can tell you that the front ZX 16v hoses are much longer than the Volcane. At the back of the car there are no differences between the two.
I would thing that for the front hoses then 205 1.9 GTi with the Girling caliper would be about right.

Recently got a zx volcane and am looking at putting some braided brakes hoses on it. But I can only find them for the 16v. Are the hoses the same between or not?
If not would the Pug 205 Gti brake hoses be the same or is it the 309?

The alternator can not set off the STOP lamp -
Even the alternator charge (battery icon) lamp may come on - not setting the STOP.
You have a different problem on your engine.
Go check the oil dipstick ASAP, as this will set off the stop lamp, but may fail the oil warning lamp.
Also check your coolant level.
It's important you trust your warning...

Torsion bars at the back.
Trying to think on this one, can't see torsion bar going, too strong. Either damper has failed, or maybe rear arm bearings were so worn that the arms is collapsing in ?????

Workmate has just arrived at work, with his zx volcane looking very peculiar, drivers side rear is lower by about 2-3 inches than the passenger side, something has obviously collapsed but didn't have time to see what (12 hr nights do that i'm afraid (GIMME BEEEEEED)
Any ideas please, passenger rear wheel arch is just below top of tyre, Drivers...

Roughly 1 cat = 2 or 3 horses.
However 1 dog = 6 horses, 2 cows = 1 dog (unless its a poodle) and again it all depends on the type of cat, if its a tabby, manx or ginger tom as ginger toms are worth more.

I am sorry but i believe you are talking absolute codswallop there is no way upon this earthly place that you could use something like lard to run a motor on , I believe you have an overactive imagination , do you have a medical problem like a.d.d or something , are you on medication? if so stay well away from cars and from here!

I built a oiler that ran on lard once,only experimental though,it was started on conventional fuel and used heat exchangers from the coolant to raise the temparature of the lard where it then ran via tubing in close proximity to the exhaust before it was fed via a solenoid operated change over valve into the fuel pump,1 block of lard about 10...

Are the cams themselves undamaged? camprofiles are carefully calculated to reduce acceleration of the cam / valve contact and to allow quiet running. Only a small amount of wear will change this and cause tapping. It may be possible to pinpoint the problem using a rod held to your ear.

2 factors to consider. The degree of elegance with which one dances across these vandalisms is very dependent on speed. Make sure that comparisons are done at same speed, and experiment to find the sweet speed for each type of speedbump.
Also, most cars will ride better when only one wheel crosses a speedbump. This is because only one wheel trying...

That's a tough one not having the car to check it out
My first suspect would be if the handbrake cables are correctly adjusted - or have dried out.
Next suspect would be the caliper/pistons themselves, but not likely on a '97.
Has the car received regular LHM fluid service ?

i have a 1997 1.9td estate (xantia)
the brakes seem to stick on when pedal is pressed (not fully but enough to stop two people from pushing car)
the pads and disos are no moe than 1/2 worn
they can release anywhere from 5 seconds upto about 2-3 mins
they are not fully applied
the calipers do not seem to be seized it's as if the pedal is being...

I reckon that this is the servo valve from your description. GSF do a rebuild kit but I think that it will be rack out for you my lad!

Right, i have a leak on the steering wheel side of the steering rack, or at least i think thats where its from. I understand that there are seals somewhere around this area, but its not something i've had problems with...

What's a Xantia then? If it is anything like a Xantia you'll find the pipes are a different size and have different fittings to 'conventional' cars.
The cheapest way is probably to get it from your nearest Citroen dealer; they ain't dear...

the brake pipe that runs from the drivers side front brake calliper to the abs unit on my xantia needs to be replaced, what i need to know is it the same pipe and ends as used on normal car brake pipes as i have a length of pipe and also a flaring tool.
anyone replaced this pipe as i am wondering whether to make a pipe myself or go to a cit dealer...

The GSF catalogue gives the part for all hatchbacks (except the 2.0 petrol turbo, V6, HDi and 2.1 TD) as N62316.
This is a 266mm disc, but its probably worth checking the diameter on your own car, because my 1997 1.9TD hatch inexplicably left the factory fitted with the discs/pads/calipers from the estate version!

The Andyspares (GSF) site lists many for Xantias but none for the 1.9TD hatch. I have been to the brembo site but the ones they recommend are solid and mine are vented.
Is there a definitive answer please as to what size/part number.

Could be the belt tensioner.My Xantia had exactly the same problem a 2 yrs ago.Sprayed it with wd 40 & it would go for a while,then come back again.I would presume its the same set up on yours but without the hydraulic pump.Have a look behind the alternator,follow the belt & you should see where the belt goes around the tensioner.Have a look at...

Personally I'd go for a late model Xantia HDi 110 SX, or Exclusive if you can find one. Its possibly a bit bigger car than you want though?

1) Reliable vehicle, diesel preferred capable of 800 mile weeks

3) Not too slow! Must be fairly enjoyable to drive.

Budget £5k ish.

first of hi,
there are no owner clubs or anything for xsara's which suks, so i guess this is the closest there will be!
got a couple of probs with my xsara.
its a 1.6 8v, '98.
brakes are pants, drums on the back i want a rear disc conversion - anyone know of any leads/contacts?

It may remove the colour, but the chemical tracers are still in the fuel and customs and excise will still detect that its red diesel and then your off to the pokey for a free holiday plus a large fine

I do'nt suppose anyone has tried this out yet,I found that passing red deisel through a circulating rig made up using a couple of old oil drums and a pond uv lamp removes the red color thus rendering it usable for road use.

Dirty LHM - give it a hydraflush cure (including filter clean) and then add new LHM oil to the hydraulics.

I have a '95 Xantia 2.0
Recently, the power steering felt slightly different.
On turning the steering wheel, it's like a momentary lack of assistance, then a slight surge as assistance returns to normal.
There are no obvious leaks.
Anyone had a similar experience ?

With a Xantia at idle, how many pipes should be returning a good flow of LHM?
I originally thought only one - from the regulator, but the car has a 6+2 pump without flow divider, so I'm guessing that there's one return from the regulator and one from the power steering.
That right?

As yours is 97, I presume it has an auto adjust cable - ie no threaded part on the end of the cable inner at the gearbox? These stupid clutches use the OUTER of the cable of operate the mechanism, so what you need to do is pull the outer of the cable forwards and the inner should appear inside the car Get your assistant to hold the cable at...

Just doing the dreaded clip. So far i have the pedal out but cant see how to get the cable back into the car, i have taken off the airfilter house and can see the clutch end of the cable but how do i make it go back into the car.

Pressure wash all the crud off ( you can use one at the local car-wash ) , have a good poke around with a screwdriver to make sure its all solid, then wire brush what you can get to and give it a coat of rust-convertor. Follow it with a coat of red primer and then some wax-based treatment;...

if its a dark mettalic green like a british racing green then there is quite a few variations to say the least the code should be stenciled on the top of one, of the suspension struts. my guess is its posiden green. i cant remember the code tho
