Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

If its making unhealthy knocking, and smokes heavilly when its doing it, it could be suffering from a stuck injector.
If its just intermittent stick some injector cleaner through it and see if it changes, otherwise its time for the diesel specialist to remove the injectors clean them and check their spray patterns.

Sound like worn clutch - perhaps previous owener rode it?
Test: Park where no vehicle in front of you (diffy in London), put handbrake full on, Put car in 4th and pick up clutch and accelrate as if you were moving off in first. (ensure seatbelt on).
If clutch worn engine will stall very slowly. if clutch good it will stall with a big judder trying...

Can you tell us which type of car this is? As a Xantia owner, I know that there are all sorts of Xantia-specific ways for water to get in (I've experienced most of them :-)), and I'm sure that there are for other models too.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the rev counter work on pulses from a sensor rather than a mechanical cable? If so then a fault in the wiring may have caused your instrument light to blow and affect the rev counter as well.

today my rev counter stopped working. Then it started again. Then it stopped. Then it started again.
Are there any reasons other than the cable becomming loose? (which I haven't checked yet)
It happened when I was doing about 3000 rpm, it just dropped dead.

DJ - have you tried uprating the bulbs?
Before i had all the problems with my ZX eating bulbs (now traced to a duff regulator) i upgraded mine to Ring Xenon Plus (same white light, but a lot brighter). cost £16 for a set and lasted over 12 months before bulb eating problem started, but much much better in the dark - E marked and legal 55W.

Now we all know the early ones are rubbish on dip and that the answer is to fit a later set. I've often given that advice, and even sold some later headlamps to a chap to do just that. But to be honest I've never actually fitted a later set to an early car myself!
The good lady is now the daily user of my Sept'1993 Xantia and will not put up with...

If you're looking for a good tow car, try to find a 2.1 Xantia. It pulls my 1200Kg Bailey like a dream.

I haven't tried it on my front windscreen.
I used to use it on my Xsara, it was great, but only was at its best for 2 weeks. You could drive in heavy rain on the motorway all day without using the wipers.
I haven't tried it on my C5 with auto wipers, but use it on the rear windscreen.

Has anyone used Rain-x or similar treatments on Xantias with the auto windscreen wipers? I've used it on other cars with good results, but don't know if it will confuse the rain sensor. I'm impressed with the auto wipers, but just don't like using wipers in the first place.

also, how long does everyone think it should take, I would say 5 mins to get belt off then 20 to remove pulley and refit new one then another 5mins to put the belt back on, is that fair? How much do you recon for it then?

Tried changing my crankshaft pulley on sunday - what a nightmare, that pulley bolt just wouldnt budge- I had took it on a 15 min run to get it warmed up as well. I think my problem could have been the length of my socket tool and not enough torque- as I was doing it on axle stands and not a ramp there wasnt much room so that was all I could use....

Just to answer my own question, I've fitted new handle & it wasn't too difficult! Removed door trim, then cut through the foamy adhesive stuff round edge of the lining - just the corner bit opposite the handle. Removed the torx screw & 10mm nut/bolt to take out bits of old handle, then re-used screw & bolt to fit new handle. A bit fiddly to get...

Unlocked car & lifted the handle - it came off in my hand (front drivers side). According to Haynes looks like a bit of a pig to replace - removing inner door trim/lining etc.Have got the new part, not sure whether to let the garage fit it. Give the tailgate a bash with the palm of your hand a few times while plipping it open a few times. This should get it open eventually.
Once you've opened it, check that the catch on the body, and more importantly on the tailgate is secure.
Mine have an occasional tendency to loosen off, needing a couple of turns on the 10mm nuts to stop it doing...

An annoying but hopefully not too serious problem happened earlier this week.
On activating the central locking on my ZX Dimension 1.4i, the doors unlocked as usual but the hatchback has stayed firmly locked. I've tried unlocking the back with the key but to no effect. Anybody got any ideas or tips to help rectify this problem, I can't cope...

Your car runs hotter than mine, but 90 degrees should be fine. The only time you should get fans kicking in is when the temp rises above 95 or so when stuck in traffic during summer.
Regarding the lack of a drain plug, you'll now have to drain your coolant by disconnecting the bottom hose. Just as easy, as long as you can get it off!

You need a good jack or hoist as you have to take off the top mount. 50mm M8 bolts for locking the sprockets - there is a hole in the engine flange behind the starter motor which lines up with a hole in the flywheel and can be a pig to get to without the right tool. My Xantia's power steering comes on and off when I start the car and run it for the first couple of miles. As this is the time I am pulling out of my drive etc it is more noticable I suppose. The steering becomes so heavy I cannot turn the wheel with one hand, it feels like it has lost all power.

I've often read about when you push the ZX hard round a bend, the rear suspension does it's thing, then it drift's gently - controlably round the bend.
Well the other day I managed to get my ZX to do it, it was round a 90 degree bend that was damp & a bit muddy, I turned in ok, gave it a welly full and the thing went round on rails then gently...

On the CD chnager there should be a manual CD casette eject button. Usualy under a piece of sticky paper or label. You'll need a small screw driver for this. Un plug the unit an lift the lable. Push down or along untill the casette ejects. Now refit the CD changer, power up the unit a fit the casette with a CD. It should now play.

No BX gearbox will fit a Xantia TD directly, as it uses the pull type clutch which was not fitted to BX's. You might be able to change the bell housing over, but I don't know if thr driveshafts are the same size, and many fittings may well be wrong.
When / how does your 'box jump out of 5th? Have you checked all the linkages are secure / not...

Intermittant problem-
The cabin fan sometimes does not operate- Sometimes it will run on the battery, sometimes not. Sometimes it will run when engine running sometimes not. Once started the fan invariably stays running unless the igniton switch is turned to either start or shut off the engine. Linked into this is the rear demist which i suspect...

With diesels, the most common cause of gasket failure appears to be overheating by whatever means. The diesel combustion process generates a lot of heat and if cooling is insufficient the head suffers (driver's head and cylinder head).

Glowplug circuit I would think. Control unit or maybe even a fuse. Without the glowplugs connecting, the starter would turn faster and the fact that if the engine is warm then all is normal suggests that power is not reaching the plugs. Intermittant fault- As the key is turned to start the pre heater light does not come on. On engaging the starter the engine turns over faster than normal. If the engine has been previously started during the day then she kicks into life and idles normally. If not then it just continues to turn on the starter.

Hi Richard,
I very much doubt if it is the crankshaft oil seal.
Idealy you need to clean that area with a preasure washer, then run the engine and with the aid of a strong light, you will then locate the source.
My guess it will be the camshaft oil seal...

Aye aye, what's that big wet patch under the car outside work last night. Hmm, engine oil. With it up on the ramps at home, there is oil everywhere underneath the car, but eventually find the oil dripping off the back O/S corner of the sump - looks like the front crank oil seal has let go

Its more than likely to be coming from the rear calipers due to aluminium corrosion on the caliper itself. Basically the caliper body corrodes on its mounting face where its attached to the suspension arm. This then causes the caliper mounting to no longer be at the correct angle causing the pads to vibrate and in turn squeal. Take a look at the...

If you have aircon the speed controller is built into the fan. It sounds like this is your car. The models without aircon used a resistor pack.
Fan only works with engine running = normal.
Fan speed changes with a short pause = normal.
A fan that is slow to start can be due to build up of crap in the motor and if cleaned restored to like new...

I have a 1.9 J Reg ZX Volcane. Can anyone tell me what the units on the rear brake pipes are ?
There is one on each of the rear brake pipes, they are about 4 inches long hexagonal cylinder units. They apear to be some kind of valve.
They are located on the pipes under the rear just in front of the spare wheel.

For once, all the bulbs had the same life expectancy! (could also be due to an over enthusiastic voltage regulator in the alternator - check that you havn't got more than max 14V across the battery terminal with the engine running).

I noticed that my petrol gauge was dark at night and it looks as if the light has failed, I then noticed my dash light to show that my headlamps are on has failed and now today my clock display has gone off.

Could it simply be a low LHM fluid level ?
Most sure way checking it's topped up correctly :
set suspension to LOWEST - then check the reservoir level is approx 2 down at most (your finger is a perfect gauge )
The only consequence overfilling is a greasy mess from spilling excess fluid.

1. i would put the control box up behind the glovebox,there will be plenty of room.
2. you dont need the mounting bracket,just cable tie the box to secure it somewhere.
3. yes,i would wire it into the power leads.

Are you sure 15 wheels will fit? I tried some 16v 15 wheels on my 1.9i volcane and the rear was scrubbing without anyone in. It looked miles better though.
There was a bloke breaking a ZX TD Volcane on ebay. Might be looking on there.

It doesn't sound to me like it just needs adjusting, dragging but with a high bite point probably means your release bearing is up the spout.
If it was just dragging, or just slipping (too high bite point) it could be adjusted, anything else is box off time.

The behaviour of the clutch in the Xantia appears to be changing.... it has always come in near the top of the pedal travel, but now appears to 'catch' quite low down, such that I can't engage or disengage gears unless I am careful to push it right to the floor. The 3 or so of pedal travel between the first engagement and full drive don't appear...

When you say 'high revs' do you mean when the car is stationary and in neutral at high revs or when you are driving? If it is in neutral it is quite possibly noise from the gear train which is nothing to worry about. Some boxes do this at low revs too. There will be some slackness developed over 11 years after all.

The gearbox on my '93 ZX is making a noise, basically at high revs there's a wierd noise, like a cog that's only just catching or sort of a loose vibration type noise, as I say only at high revs and is cured (well the noise stops )by simply putting the lightest pressure on either side of the gearstick????

Later 4HP20's are apparently designed as sealed for life . If you really have to change the fluid, the level is checked via a plug on the side of the box but it's well tricky as it's under the car, so without a ramp the car won't be level!. Also it's close to the very hot exhaust pipe.
To fill, you remove the plastic breather then the tubular...

If you have drum brakes the torque for teh hub nut is 200Nm / 148lbf ft
If you have discs its 180 Nm / 133 lbf ft.
Sounds like the needle bearings in the torsion bar shaft are knackered on one side. Try jacking the offending wheel up and seeing if there is any play at the point where the swinging arm pivots.

Well, This is a bit of a tricky one and even worse to advise on. THe right way to do it is to remove the whole dashboard which is a bit of a job (two hours) and then you can at least SEE the valve which is to the left of the clutch pedal.
the gate valve can usually be gently forced after soaking them with your preferred loosenin' juice and...

According the the Haynes manual i need to remove the oil filter to remove the started motor as access is poor on the GTI.
If i remove the oil filter, do i need to drain the oil? Bearing in mind i changed the oil and filter about 2000 miles ago.

Having completly messed up the replacement of the centre rear sphere on a Xantia i can tell you it shouldn't be effecting your suspension as i its there for your rear brakes in the event of a stall. (correct me if i'm wrong!)
I blanked off this sphere to drive the car to a garage and the suspension operated fine.
