Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Diesels run on the principal of suurplus air and therefore run as fast as the available fuel permits.
This means that at idle your car will burn all the fuel available. More fuel - runs faster . . .
If it smells or smokes its an indication that the fuel isn't atomising properly or (and unlikely unless its been tinkered with) the timing is...

Hi all,
I've got a 96 AX 1.5 Diesel. When you start it, there is quite a bit of black smoke that comes out the exhaust. Also if you leave it running you can smell the diesel from it. I think it's overfueling. Is there anyway to adjust/test/check whether it is?
Also I seem to be ablle to get about 300 miles from a tank of diesel, when it used to do...

Known issues
Rear Wheels leaning in at top...rear axle wear
Head gasket/cooling system problems..blocked radiators on TD models look for signs of rusty water under bonnet. pressurisation of cooling system means Head gasket needs replacement
Heater matrix is a PITA to replace, check operation and for dry mats inside/strange smells...

Hmmmph, well I told you to edit your post, but here goes... We put a new thermoswitch in (have I made you look silly?!?).... Ok, maybe a bit more complicated:- replaced the 3 pin thermoswitch for a 2 pin one out of a xantia (or petrol zx) and rewired the plug, and it all works fine. Dont know why a 3 pin one wont work, its had 3 different ones in.

First change the following in this order.
air filter, fuel filter, oil filter and oil.
Be aware that Diesels often look worse in headlamps.
Get a friend to follow you in daylight.
37 is not that bad for a Xantia, the steps outlined should take that back to 41 or 42 which at this time of year is ok.

However, the last thing I want to do is spend a fortune getting them reconditioned to find it is something else, such as the pump. Acadianamite! sounds as though it will work as long as you have plenty of slop in the rubber mountings for the silencer to stop it being stressed as it thrashes about. I wonder if a flexible joint would be a good idea.
It will go very smartly but it won't 'arf drink. Good way of using the bits, though.

I believe the service manual says 36 Kmiles for LHM replacement.
But if the colouor is brownish it would certainly need a replacement. Even old LHM should be rather fresh neon green in colour. I'd say you should go for a hydracleanse cure before you fill it with LHM again : LHM fluid service

The Time/Temp display on the XM is backlit by tiny tiny filament bulb that eventually wear out. It is quite possible to replace them with a steady hand and some some small tools. You can't get the lamps from Citroën - they only want to sell you the whole display - but if you check out Maplin, Radioshack etc för the smallest 12V lamps with wire...

Does anyone know if the LCD display on the XM is repairable/prone to faults or a throw away job?
I am thinking of the one on the right hand side that displays the clock and trip computer. Mine has started to fade from the clock end although when in low light mode with the sidelights on it is fine.

sounds like an air bleed line has dropped off and that a look under another BX would be instructive. The LHM weep probably means that a rear strut is on the way out.

If you have 2 plip keys do they both behave the same?

Anyone come accross this before?
I have a Zsara (2000 W)Mk1 with RF Remote locking. The Locking works fine with the key but is intermittent with the Plip. The Plip has been checked out by my local Citroen dealer as OK.(sending a signal, but is the signal corrupt? The weird thing is that the intermittent nature of the fault gets worse 12-24 hours...

Yes they should bolt straight on, providing you have at least 14 wheels. The caliper mounting is the carrier, you will need these too.

Inlet is 0.2mm, exhaust 0.4mm engine cold.
If the vales are set front/rear, they should correspond to the nearest manifold.
Your car is also unlikely to have a carb due to it's age (it must have a catalytic converter) so you'll notice you can't adjust the idle speed and mixture.
A good way to clear pipes is to hold your thumb over the end, tip...

Ok, took the rocker cover off and its full of gunk, main breather to air housing is clogged to hell. I think this may be the issue. I'm about to clear it all out and give it some fresh oil and filter but noticed the tappets seem quite loose so heres my question

Guys... the moment I start the car (XM 2.5 TD '97) I have my aircon blowing at highest speed.
A/C works fine, I can adjust temperature...everything except turn off or slow down blowing.

If it's what I think it is. The catches that pull the window onto the seal may have streched over time. Two ways to sort, 1) replace seal with new as this will be thicker and give the catch more to pull against, 2) if you can adjust the catch tighten it up slightly. I think they ain't adjustable so go for seal change. Most good motor factors sell...

I haven't made biodiesel, but I have used SVO (Straight vegetable Oil). (in a C15 (XUD7 engine)). I found that methanol was quite expensive in the UK, and that making biodiesel on a reasonable scale was something of a faff, whilst just modifying the engine to heat up veg oil was quite simple. It does depend on the type of driving you do - SVO only...

I want a K&N filter for my 97 td xant I was wondering is it the same as the 306 td one as I have been told the part numbers are the same.
I know it sounds very boy racer but it's not really, I had one on my old rover and was very immpressed with the durability of it, being able to wash etc.

The locks on the XM are of known poor quality. It is possible to refurbish them, but its a mucky and picky business and only puts off a complete replacement which is finally inevitable. A set of replacement locks from Citroën is not that expensive.
The remote on the Series 2 is radio while the Series 1 is infrared, so they dont communicate at all....

It sounds as if the piston has been pushed out of the caliper. If so you need to make sure that the rubber seal around the piston is seated correctly as the piston is pushed/screwed back in.
If this is the problem and you cannot get the piston to seat correctly then it might be easier/cheaper to get a replacement/secondhand caliper.

Lots of cars have h/lights where the dip remains on when main beam is on, xantia and zx for instance as these cars (not all zx) have the twin H1 setup, one bulb one fillament.
Any twin fillament bulb will have the dip switched off when main beam is used, I would have thought a Xsara vtr would have twin H1's too, has it got H4's or something more...

Had the wifes car this morning Reno Megane Convertible (2001 mod) any how when going from dipped to main beam I noticed that the dipped stayed on. Now my Xsara I have noticed that going from dipped to main beam, the dipped turns off and I have this very faint dark area in front of the car. No big problem but just wondered. Is this the Xsara's old...

I have a 1 litre AX, 95/96 model with single carb. Anyway it keeps having little jumpy fits when driving and sometimes just loses all power. Doesnt actually stall, it just wont rev or accelerate. I checked the plugs and they are clean and sparking well, the air filter is clear, the oil seems fine and coolant is OK so can rule out compression...

Oil filter is a normal thread, So anti clockwise should undo it.
Sometimes its easier to remove the filter with the engine warm, But dont burn yourself.

I fitted a cheap induction kit to my 1.4 zx, my main worry is the filter hangs down behind the engine, leaving the open end exposed to water etc. I was going to make up a bit of pipework but haven't got round to it yet.

I've recently bought another ZX Estate. My old one had dim-dip headlights (when set to the sidelight position and ignition on) but this newer one does not (R reg SX)

My car has failed its mot on (n/s/r brake pipe to caliper) I have just had a look and the pipe has a coil in it, question is can I just have a pipe made up at an indipendent citroen garage or will I have to pay a fortune at the dealers for an orginal pipe, I presume it has a coil in it for a reason.

I had this with a TD Xantia. Putting on a new belt didn't stop it, in the end swopping the crankshaft pulley stopped it. It was no longer gripping the belt. (£75 from Citroen, Breakers visit was somewhat cheaper)

I think you mean EGR- Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, normally found on/near the exhaust manifold.
Its purpose is to reduce exhaust emissions by redirecting gases back into the engine.
Gaining access is normally the problem with these because they are normally situated at the back of the engine on HDI's. I would look at ours but the wife is...

Try pulling the fuse/fuses out.Sometimes mine just stops working,if i pull the main power fuse back out,it usally starts working again.Or,disconnect the main battery for 10mins or so.Make sure you have the stereo code though.You may find that the alarm activates as soon as you connect the battery again.

Only one way, drain box of oil, remove drive shafts, prize seals out, knock seals in, replace drive shafts, fill box with oil.
Omitting the obvious like jacking the car up, do you need it in any more detail than that.

On the throttle housing on my Xant 16v 2 ltr,97, there is a hose which is fitted to housing, under stepper motor. It then goes along front of cat and dis-appears into left hand wing, into a box of some sort. When idling, one can hear like a chuffing noise coming from the wing where this box is fitted. If it is on the drivers or O/S check the fuel flap lock. That one siezes very easliy and just buzzes instead of operating. Lots of WD40 is usually a cure with a few operatons and then grease it well. R

So you think Haynes should issue a new updated manual every year to cover the last possible model changes
If the '00 model is covered in a Saxo manual, this manual cant be that old - say a '01-'02 issue.
I believe you have to wait at least a couple of years more to get an updated issue.

Good idea about the aux light. The sensor itself will have varying resistances at different temperatures, and it wouldn't take much to use a multimeter ( if you can't get the specs ) to figure out roughly where you want to be.
Of course, you'd need to find out where the circuit is to light the bulb in given circumstances. Might be just as well to...

I had a similar problem whilst trying to find a hydraulic fault after stitching off ignition whilst still moving and steering. PAS developed the same symptoms as yours, especially RHD steer. Symptoms would come and go like yours.

Just a few things to check,
Any play in the track rod bushes on the rack or the ends
Open the bonnet and check the top strut mounts, give the car a good bounce there should be no appreciable movement.
Other than that it's the lower wishbone bushes (usually the rear one) there cheap and easy to change.
Just remember MOT testers do miss things,...

A couple of things to consider and offer options;
VSX Xantias have a lever to adjust the angle of the passenger seat base which may help if you can source one and swop the base/frame, otherwise swap the whole interior for a VSX.
The most comfortable seats seem to be leather electric ones because they have a multitude of extra adjustments.
