Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

A gasket sealer wont help a new gasket.
The new gasket is designed to cope with the temperature differences and thus take up the shifting clearances over the engine's working temperature range.
Over time the gasket perishes, will be compressed and can no longer follow the clearance shifting - hence the leaking.
Just accept that nothing lasts...

My '93 Xantia seems generally fine in the hydraulic department but does not tick . Rather it makes a hissing sound for about 5 seconds in every 30 or so when idling. This hiss seems to be when the pump is supplying pressure as it is accompanied by a very slight loading on the engine. If I set the ride height to high the hiss goes on for about 20...

It could be the door seals!! The Picasso suffers with a similar problem. The rubber gets very dry then clicks when it rubs, more so when the car goes over un-even ground.
A drop of baby oil, or vaseline on the door seals should stop it. If it has inner and outer seals, only lube the outer ones. Could be a lot cheaper than Dealer fixes.

My 2003 C3 has started clicking recently in the area of the B pillars on both sides of the car when driving on poor road surfaces. To start with the TD used a different gearbox/final drive as well as disc brakes all round and different front suspension - struts and droplinks. Then you may need a bigger radiator, and so it goes on.
Its easier and probably cheaper to buy a TD and sell the one you've got.

Indicator stalk, a very common problem.
Wiggling the stalk lightly when it's clicking will confirm it. A new switch is the proper solution, not dear from the GSF shop.

While driving or sitting still there is a clicking sound from what I guess is the indicator relay. It sounds as if the indicator has been used but this happens intermitently and no indicator dash lights come on . Is the relay on its way out ?

The Visa engines does not have an ECU
- it's a fairly simple transistor-ignition module.
Same type as you find on all AX/BX/CX carburettor engines - and more : the ignition setup is exactly the same on these models.
Furthermore you can use ANY round ignition coil for testing. It's only for higher engine revs you need the special...

ok, you need to unbolt the inlet manigold and possibly the top engine mount, i will take a look at my spair one but i know its such a hard job people do cut corners and only replace 3 (not recomended obviously).

It probably will be the Lucas pump. I dont think the AX ever got a Bosch unit.
I have run my AX on 100% SVO (Ran but didnt like it - very gutless) And have also run it on a 50/50 mix (when I too was brassic). However if its a Lucas pump not soething I would recomend long term as the high acidity content will eat away at the seals. Depends if you...

The more common causes would also be present when taking off from start ?
#1 suspect would be engine mounts rubber.
#2 suspect is an oil contaminated clutch
#3 suspect would be loose/missing gearbox to engine mounting bolts
As a guess I'd say a broken spring in the friction plate could give worse clutch symptoms at speed.

I am experiencing a violent juddering when changing down and releasing the clutch. This juddering seems at it's worse at speed, perhaps changing down from above 40mph. No problem when starting from rest! Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.

The ZX uses the same engine as other Citroen models.
Is it the 1.9diesel (turbo ?)
- or what petrol size ?
In any case it is wrong just replacing the headgasket.
A headgasket does not wear
There is always a reason why it fails - like an overheated engine at some time which has caused the cylinder head to warp.

As you feared, the connectors on the rad are the bayonet type. Also the drain plug at the bottom of the rad is difficult to reach because of the compressor - at least it is on the 2.1. I find a pair of pliers best to give a half turn and pull outwards. Also the under-tray needs removing for better access.

On a carburettor engine you should have some kind of mechanical means to compensate for the A/C load at idle - on the carburettor.
Look for any linkage that could possibly alter the idle revs - other than the accelerator cable itself.
Most likely a vacuum actuator controlled by the solonoid in question.

The suspension on Xantias is different to other cars and so there isn't a lot of people who understand them, hence the questions need to be asked of people who understand oleopneumatic. The Xsara has standard springs and dampers, and everybody understands those.

I have had a constant knocking sound coming from the near side front suspension of my ZX TD. It happens at all speed, most noticably gong about 30 on slightly rough roads. It also crashed quite badly under rebound eg, coming off a speed hump. I think it is to do with the roll bar conection/bearing because the actual shock seems ok when I push on...

This is the injector needle lift sensor, it tells the ECU when the injector has opened, the ECU uses this so that it knows where the timing of the injection pump is so that it can adjust it to a specific value. The other sensor the ECU has is the TDC sensor (on the flywheel?), using a combination of the two sensors it can calculate what the timing...

If this is the situation : - where item 4 is the balljoint,
- then it seems to me there should be 3 bolts with self-locking nuts - not just 1.
Try lock the nuts with a threadlock fluid (like LockTite hard). Works only on dry & clean threads.

I had a ball joint go on n/s/f - rattle. As I had changed the wishbones about a year previously with replacments for local motor factors, was unhappy as n/s/f ball joint knocking/rattle. The ball joints were riveted on - so could not change the ball joint itself. Suspected cheap parts - so I opted to change both wishbones with ball joints from gsf...

Well in regard to the air filter housing...it really depends if your a dwarf which would come to reason why you would find it difficult to clip it back on.....Im not a dwarf but am weak....It takes a bit of force to get the clips on....if its exact type then you dont need to worry....unless you have been given the wrong one....they do tend to need...

I'll whole heartedly second that! Finding this forum while I was looking for another car was one of the reasons I stayed with Citroen and brought the Xantia. I wanted a Xantia but I have to admit I was put off by the thought of the hydro suspension - everybody knows it's unreliability and expense to repair.

I did the throttle cable on my 97 TD recently and it's an easy job. If you buy the full kit it's about 30 quid, though, which is a bit offputting if all you want is the inner. May be worth your replacing the outer anyway, if it's routed like mine was then it goes through a pretty sharp right-angle bend just above the radiator and wears out at that...

As the proud owner of a 94 1.9td xantia with 153k on the clock,I have this evening become the proud owner of another with 142k on it. Drove it for a test drive and it was mint, no oil leaks, suspension great and all the electrics work including all dash lights. The only fault I can find is that the accelerator cable is a little frayed at the end....

I'm sure most of us xant owners become accustomed to our cars and take the ride and handling for granted, -I'm pretty sure I'd be glad to get mine back after a few weeks driving a normal car . I'm also glad you seem to be pleased with your garage... they get a bad press generally!!

After nearly 4 weeks,i have my Xantia back .No more a/bag light(nearly a yr)no more abs light(2 mths) & a new hydractive unit(the long wait ).Seems to ride better than i remember.So much nicer & much more power that the Fiesta 1.1 i`ve been driving .But the a/c has packed up in the 4 weeks .
Still,at least the garage washed it .I dont know what...

could as well be a weak (corroded or chafed) connection burned out. But not unheard of a burnt motor as well - but rarely happens. Not a known weakness.

Xantia 1.9 TD N reg: Driving home tonight in the rain the wipers suddenly stopped in the upright position and stayed there. Moments later a strong burning smell. Pulled in and invesigated as much as I could in the rain but no fire so waited for the rain to ease and continued on. Anyone with similar experience and if so what did it turn out to be?...

Its not too bad a job to do but have a good read through a Haynes manual as the twin camshafts do make it a little more complicated due to having to 'reset' the sprockets onto the camshaft.

Is impossible not the answer you're looking for?
The skin will be held on by a combination of crimping and welding so you might be able to unpick it but then again you might not. The silencers are good quality on the Xantia and made from relatively heavy steel so they could be difficult. Set to with a hammer and chisel and you'll find out the hard...

The price is about right if he's getting it in for you-he's put his margin on, but take a look in the online shop and you could buy it for him, even if you can't fit it, which would save a bit.
£40 fitting is probably about right, maybe a little on the cheap side as its about an hours job time.

Hi, some scumbag has tried to razzle the locks on my zx so I have now resorted to the remote plip but its very hit and miss. I just need a decent case. Have tried ebay but no luck!

I dont really know as I am a XM man, but there have been several other posts on the subject recently. I wouldn't worry about the extra fuel, at tickover this would be negligible.

In morning startups or anytime really with startups the Idle tends to approx 900...but when engine warm the idle goes up to 1000rpm exactly. Any ideas...its costing me a fortune in wasted diesel

I thought all newer type MAF's / AFM's were now the hot wire type? The older vane system was too inaccurate and prone to failure with moving parts.

No, but there could be savings in less combustion thereby creating a less dense hyperbole explosion, in the nether regions of the piston circumnavigational pressure module? I suggest you may achieve the effect by ripping off a couple of teeth off the cam belt? However I do suggest you take the 'precortion' ( in the interest of work and safety)...

the offset of the wheels should be the same (or with in the acceptable band for fitment - 15 - 22) the j rating is the width of the wheel so a 5 1/2j is 5 1/2 wide and the 8j is 8 wide and so on, the wheels should bolt straight on without any problems!

My dad's Xantia is struggling to start at the moment and ran on today as if he still had the key in it.
Sounds like a dodgy stop solenoid to me. I will check the wiring but I need to know whether it is replacable on this model and how easy it is. It has had the damned immobiliser immobilised!

The answer is:
Turbos are cheap and plentiful, the job is torturous!
Realistically, you need a day to change the turbo. Its difficult due to its location and the fact you have to remove the inlet manifold to get to it. Make sure you take the turbo out on the manifold, and get the new one on th manifold as well as the 3 bolts holding it on are...

I have finally come to the conclusion that the burning smell my car makes under load is coming from oil leaking out of the turbo when it is hot and is being cooked and the smell is then creeping into the cabin.
It always does this when travelling uphill and under load. I had a look under the car and could see the sump and back of the head were...

You need to remove the boot and clean the grease away so you can see what you are doing, the securing circlip is inside the CV joint, so you cant get at it, but if you smartly hit the CV joint outwards, as close to the shaft as possible, you should be able to spring it off. You will need to hit is hard and square, if you can find a bit of 1/2...

DO GSF do the engine clips for HDi xsara . Also has anyone noticed the Coolant pipes at back of engine rub against rocker cover/head and start to wear , also the engine cover rubs same pipe from top . Any idea what to use to stop the rubbing . (looks like the pipes from heater matrix.

Hi folks,
I have just taken delivery of a 2nd hand 6 CD multichanger for my car and I'm hoping to fit it at the weekend. It's a Clarion CDC634 with the round DIN plug lead. My head unit has the CD button on it which just says 'connect' every time I press it. Hopefully the changer lead will be the right one. If not, do I need some kind of cable...

Up to intermediate-fine
Back to low-fine
BUT..going from low to auto back refuses to rise.

If you've got access to a mig welder you could baffle up your sump yourself, they aren't difficult to do. Have you considered going for the ultimate fully dry sump?
That GTI-6 sump only has 1 baffle and it's not like the baffled sumps I've seen people producing for things like Caterhams or Westfields...

Does anyone know if a sump from a gti-6 will fit onto a earlier 1.9 ally block from a bx/405 16v. They are both XU series are they not even though theres different capacity and ally/iron? I ask as I could do with baffling the sump on my visa and I spotted this on ebay which would be cheaper than having one made or buying a kit from peugeot sport...

Hi, just take one out and pop into the store (it only takes a few mins to remove one), The ones in my ZX were a standard size (I forget exactly) and I got some Alpine replacements which were good. I did go back in and tell them that they weren't any better than the ones I had, but apparently speakers take a while to bed in , and sure enough they...

But how do you measure what speakers are in your car to find replacements, like the fronts in a ZX.
Do you measure the outside diameter, the PCD of the screw fixings or the Diameter of the hole. Are the standard fronts 100 or 125 or 130 mm diameter and what do you reckon...

For the BX the torque for the front sensors is quoted in Haynes at 7.2 lb ft.
So - have fun buying a torque wrench that will read this low!
The answer is that this is not particularily tight and the bolt isn't very large. With experience you can judge the tightness of bolts as they yield and stretch slightly at the correct torque.
