Esp fault 3008

Post by Jonesy1704 »

So my 2011 1.6 hdi Peugeot 3008 had a diesel smell coming into car when driving. On inspection seen a large build up of carbon around the injectors so figured there could be one leaking, also noticed a leak from the egr where it bolts onto to back of the cylinder head. So took off the egr valve and found a missing gasket, replaced that and cleaned the injectors up and replaced all washers and seals. Job seems a good one, however on test drive the orange esp light and orange electric handbrake light are on the dash and vehicle is in limp mode. Switch off and restart all goes out and vehicle drives good for few moments and again. Same faults. Ran diagnostic and got the following codes, U1208 and c1391. Can anyone help. What have I done to cause this??

It's possible you've dislodged / damaged / pulled / disconnected a wiring connector whilst undertaking the EGR work.

These all have CAN data networks throughout the engine bay to the sensors and equipment and therefore if you disrupt these it can nave a knock-on effect on the data communications with other systems.

The engine ECU relies on the information from the ESP system via the wheel speed sensors. As you have ESP issues, I'd be checking that there's no oil or contamination on any of the wiring connectors and trace your steps back where you were working to see if there is anything that has been disconnected or damaged wiring or connection wise. Make sure you haven't disconnected anything from the engine ECU and that all the connections are secure.
Fault Code: C1391
Description of Fault: Non-acknowledgement of the engine torque fault: Not characterised. The time for recording the fault code is 500 milliseconds.
Absence of the frame coming from the engine management ECU.
Conditions for Fault to clear:
  • Presence of frames coming from the engine ECU
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • The stability control regulation (ESP) and the traction control function (ASR) end. Once it is finished, cutting of all ESP-ASR operations.
    The other sub-functions remain active
  • Switching on of the warning lamp and/or warning message: ESP/ASR system warning lamp
Symptoms:
  • Lighting of the ABS and ESP warning lamps
Suspect Areas:
  • Faults in the engine management ECU
  • Connectors
  • CAN network

Fault Code: U1208
Description of Fault: No communication with the engine management ECU fault: Data invalid

- The time for recording the fault code is 500 milliseconds
- The clutch pedal sensor values sent by the engine management ECU are not coherent with those of the ESP ECU
Possibility 2
- The time for recording the fault code is 500 milliseconds
- The datastreams from the engine management ECU are not valid
Possibility 3
- The time for recording the fault code is 500 milliseconds
- The accelerator pedal sensor values sent by the engine management ECU are not valid
Conditions for Fault to clear: Possibility 1
- Clutch pedal sensor values sent by the engine ECU coherent with those of the ESP ECU
Possibility 2
- The datastreams from the engine management ECU are valid
Possibility 3
- The accelerator pedal sensor values sent by the engine management ECU are valid
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: Possibility 1
- The anti-lock braking system (ABS) function switches to down-grade mode
- Immediate cutting of all the speed control functions (Electronic stability control (ESP))
Possibility 2
- The anti-lock braking system (ABS) function switches to down-grade mode
- Immediate cutting of all the speed control functions (Electronic stability control (ESP))
- Hill start assistance function inactive
- Switching of the electric parking brake to manual mode
Possibility 3
- The regulation functions remain active
- Hill start assistance function inactive
- Switching of the electric parking brake to manual mode

Switching on of the warning lamp and/or warning message
Possibility 1
-
Possibility 2
- Warning lamp ESP/ASR
Possibility 3
- Warning lamp ESP/ASR
- Electric parking brake automatic functions deactivation warning lamp
- "SERVICE" warning lamp
Symptoms:
  • Lighting of the ABS and ESP warning lamps

Thank you Marc for your reply. I've tried double checking all the connections that I've worked near and all seems ok. To my understanding it would appear that the esp ECU isn't communicating with the main ECU. For what reason I don't know yet. The battery was very low when I went to start again after I rebuilt it the first time and I jump started it off another car. Is it possible I've damaged the esp module or even blown a fuse? Is there a way to test the esp module and is there a fuse for it or a wiring diagram? Where is the esp module on a 3008 MK1? Again I appreciate the help.

You'll need to provide your VIN if you want a diagram as they are specific to each vehicle and options. Please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff.

With the exception of the wiring codes, most of the component codes are indexed here:

PSA Electrical Diagrams - Wiring & Symbols Codes Index

I've put up the injection and the ESP diagrams, as according to the fault it seems more likely to be engine ECU related. As you have no codes for the wheel speed sensors, we can assume those are all working correctly. So as may CAN wiring / communication fault between the ESP ECU and the Engine ECU.

On inspection I'm considering the possibility it's the fuse box voltage module. Mines a Delphi 28236841. Is there details on how to test it properly? Thanks
