Taking up bobins last argument it seems to me that the main thing we need is a drastic reduction in population!! any volunteers?
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Nature may do its bit in that regard Mick., A couple of nice big volcanos and droughts might be enough.mickthemaverick wrote: ↑06 Mar 2024, 13:45 Taking up bobins last argument it seems to me that the main thing we need is a drastic reduction in population!! any volunteers?

Re: Energy Matters Global and Domestic
I've made the point before -
Mankind shuffled onto this planet roughly 6 million years ago - give or take a couple of years.
It's taken all that time to get the global population up to just over 8 billion people today.
If right now today we were to reduce the global population by a not inconsiderable half a billion people (around 1 in 16 people everywhere ceasing to be) then it'd turn the clock all the way back to........
.......
.......
.......
......
The years 2016 - 2017. Yep, 7 or 8 years ago.
Just have a think about those numbers for 30 seconds.
You might see why I have trouble believing that a 'dash for electrons' - even if it's a slow dash - will have any effect.
It's a numbers game in the end.

I wonder Bobins if you're counting things right, nothings been added to the world in all those six million years the stuff/elements quantities has just moved around from one model to another humankind lots of little animals dinosaurs and mammoths bigger but not so many. Maybe we should be counting the atoms and microbes.

I can definitely go along with that, GibboGibbo2286 wrote: ↑06 Mar 2024, 17:06 I wonder Bobins if you're counting things right, nothings been added to the world in all those six million years the stuff/elements quantities has just moved around from one model to another humankind lots of little animals dinosaurs and mammoths bigger but not so many. Climate change and all the hoo-ha that goes along with it doesn't actually matter. There's no need to force BEVs or heat pumps on to people, climate related taxation can be done away with, we can keep our gas boilers and cookers.
It gets my vote !
"......the law of conservation of mass or principle of mass conservation states that for any system closed to all transfers of matter and energy, the mass of the system must remain constant over time, as the system's mass cannot change, so the quantity can neither be added nor be removed. Therefore, the quantity of mass is conserved over time.
The law implies that mass can neither be created nor destroyed, although it may be rearranged in space, or the entities associated with it may be changed in form."

Re: Energy Matters Global and Domestic
I'm not a fan of the electric car theory as it still has many 'holes' in its plan. Firstly is the electricity coming from renewable sources? Probably not, we still use fossil fuel to produce electricity and the higher demand in electricity means higher demand on fossil fuels. Until renewable sources are in place like wind farms (but the blades still go to landfill as there not recyclable) are more widely producing electricity then it's a lose lose for everyone. I personally think Hydrogen power is the way to go but I doubt the government can tax that so will be put off for years.

Re: Energy Matters Global and Domestic
Great video, very informative. I think she went on to much about ground hole Hydrogen. What about obtaining Hydrogen from water, H2O? The planet is full of water so that should make it the best renewable source surely....

There is a previous article about just that, hydrogen as a by product from another process, look back a few pages.

Re: Energy Matters Global and Domestic
The problem is that the amount of energy required to separate it + storage and delivery and would be many times the cost of oil.

Re: Energy Matters Global and Domestic
I'm not a 'greenie' nor am I interested in the climate change story but I am a bit tight fisted. My interest in solar and battery storage is entirely financial.
The solar panels I bought in 2019 have already paid for themselves and the feed in tariff from them continues for 20 years, now adding a battery is an upfront expense that has immediately started to payback, unlike buying a motor car whose value would immediately start depreciating.

Re: Energy Matters Global and Domestic
Correct Peter and the cost of a supply infrastructure for supplying hydrogen to the car market is just never going to be met even if they can in the end produce it from renewables.

Whichever energy path our evolution takes us down, problems will always be ahead while the dichotomy of life versus luxury remains unresolved. Somewhat philosophically I believe that the Human race is inflicted with instinctive greed which will continue to prevent any such resolution to the day of extinction!

Without greed (or is it ambition) Mick we would still be living in caves.mickthemaverick wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 09:31 Whichever energy path our evolution takes us down, problems will always be ahead while the dichotomy of life versus luxury remains unresolved.
