The Citroen recommendation is Total 9000 Quartz /Futur.
Dealers have it at reasonable prices.
Total stations don't :(

I always get my oil from the dealer, so Total oil. Its actually a better price than you might think, certainly cheaper than Halfords.

Do you have the earlier 8v or the later 16v 2.0HDI? As both require different oil.

The HDI 2.0 16v has a 20k mile service interval with the specified oil. You can use a lesser oil (i.e. a 15w40 / 10w40 / 5w40 oil that meets API CF-4) but that will reduce the service interval to 10k miles.

I'm working to a 5k mile service interval using a fairly basic API CF-4 oil.

Later 16v engines should have a sepcifit oil regardless of milage, or so i believe. A low sulphur oil should be used. Small oil pipework and the FAp filter has something to do with its oil grade/type.

Citroen changed the oil grade it should have a couple of years ago.

I use Fuchs Titan XTR semi synthetic in my 2.2 Hdi. It seems ideal and a good price.
Cheers, Kev

Used to have:- Xantia 1.9 TurboD SX. 1996 Blue & 1998 Silver Activa. + 1992 BX TZD Turbo.

Have a read of this: http://www.c5club.cz/files/navody/2005-C5_C8.pdf

There is a comment on page 9 saying that it is essential to use the specified Total oil for the 20k service interval. It then goes on to say that failing using the specified oil you must follow the "severe" maintenance schedule i.e. oil changes at 12k miles.

The regeneration cycle for the particle filter gets the engine and turbo quite hot so you need a reasonably good oil. The particle filters are susceptible to being blocked by ash, so a low ash / low SAPS oil would be best too.

PSA B71 2296 is the specification for the oil as an educated guess a VW 507.00 or MB 229.51 spec oil would be suitable / equivalent to the Total Oil. Total Quartz 9000 meets the lesser VW 505.00 and MB 229.3 specs, the PSA spec may be higher than these.

This site: http://oilspecifications.org has quite a bit of information about various manufacturers oil specifications. The Ford oil specification where they use PSA engines are of interest, presumably these oils can be substituted for PSA specified oils since the engines are the same.

Im just going by what the dealer told me, and its oil does seem to have changed but i cant remember what the specific grade is now.

I always get it from the dealers so i know im getting the right stuff and always change oil every 6K miles. Id rather not buy a car which has done the 20K miles services. Luckily our 16v and other C5s have been done atleast every 10K since new.

20K servicing might be ok, but id rather have a car which has been serviced sooner and i always service my cars sooner than they need.

It seems to be ACEA C2, which is a grade I hadn't heard of until I looked up the oil grade for my C5!
