Groaning at low revs - Xantia HDi
At low revs under load, say below 1500rpm, I have a groaning noise which seems to come from the left hand side front wheel area. The wheel bearing has been changed which helped a bit. Any ideas?
Hi,
When you say groaning, do you mean a steady tone or more of a grumble/chatter? If the latter, might be worth a look at the brake pads - I get this increasingly as the pads get worn down (Xsara HDI) and renewing the pads cures it . I've heard that modified pads are available which are supposed to deal with the issue, but haven't enquired at Citroen yet myself.
Regards
Greg

The source of the noise is almost certainly due to the brake pads rattling around in the calipers. Citroën issued a "Info Rapid" (service bulletin in English) on this very subject. The remedy is to fit a brace (available from dealers) to the caliper that applies pressure to the caliper/pads to keep them quiet.
I've had to do this to both my HDi (110) and V6 as they are fitted with the same calipers. The previous owner of my HDi "Bernie" (remember him?) changed drop links, track rod ends etc trying to find the source of the rattle without success.
As "Marslek" states try pulling up the handbrake to see if the rattle goes away, if it does you need to fit the brace kit. I'll try to dig out the part number for the kit.
