Cruise control

Post by goldfinche »

Hi all please can you help, I need a few pointers about cruise control, the car is a 1997 V6 Xantia. It has stopped working, fuse No 6 is supposed to be the one and it is OK. The switch on the dash lights up. I have never had anything with CC before so am a bit lost as I dont know what to look for. Could anyone give me a run down on how it works?
I dont know if it makes any difference but attatched to the quadrant that the throttle cable turns (AFM end) there is a push rod that goes to a rubber "bellows" about 2" diameter with a tube that dissapears to ??? This may well be a red herring but I thought I would mention it.
Any pointers would be great.
Cheers.

It could be the brake sensor. On the brake pedal there is a sensor which is known not to last long and the cruise control will not turn on if this is not working. Its not working on my V6 either but not got round to changing this. Somebody else might know more detail

Yep a common problem... most Cit Specialists stock a quantity of brake pedal switches/sensors. Got fed up of changing mine so don't use cruise control anymore.

Hi Well since the last post had a quick look at the brake pedal switch, it has only two wires coming from it so I take it that it is a single switch, the brake lights work as does the gear lever release solenoid. ( when in "park" the lever can not be moved unless the brake pedal is pushed.) So any more ideas chaps, some body must know,Haynes ignore the whole sobject as usual!!

The brake pedal may be the wrong type if it onle has two wires. The V6 pedal has two switches inside, one normally open the other normally closed. The normally closed one is the one which the cruise control uses to know when you're braking and switch off. The contacts on these corrode and so the switch appears to be open all the time making the cruise control unable to operate. I have dismantled the pedal and cleaned the contacts on mine twice since I have had it, a bit of fine wet and dry does the trick.

The other problem I know of is the vacuum hose which leads from the pump to the bellows can perish. The pump is located behind the front nearside bumper, below where the headlamp is.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

Thank you this is most interesting, the pedal/switch has not been changed and the CC simply stopped working. The bellows I cannot make any sense of at all. The rod goes into the plastic tube / rubber bellows unit, if the throttle quadrant is moved to the max throttle position the rod does not move far enough into the tube and move/contact the stop at the inner end of the plastic tube at all, so it (the rod) does not actually do anything. I am sorry it would be a lot simpler if I could draw it, but I havnt worked out how to do that yet.
Thanks again.
Cheers.

I agree that the brake pedal switch should have 3 wires. I thought that all Xantias had the three wire switch whether CC fitted or not.

The other common cause of CC not activating is the vacuum hose from the manifold to the CC control valve splits where it is pushed onto the valve, beause it is a 3mm hose on a 5mm spigot. cut 25mm off the hose and refit... Mine has gone there 3 times in 2 years. I will make a permanent repair next time...

To access the valve you should remove the front bumper, although after the first time (when you know where the hose goes and ca do the job one handed), you can access it by loosening the mudshield in the LH wheel arch.

Righty oh then thank you, I will investigate all the points so far raised after the MOT next week !!! Will report back with findings, dependent on weather and hopefully not getting run over by passing traffic.

Hi all well some news not sure if it's of any use though. While being MOTed it was put on the Elite and the answer was Sensor missing ??? But it didnt indicate which one, J'm going to chase the vacuum pipe and have a look at the brake pedal switch tomorrow.
Having a quick look around tonight, on the bottom face of the AFM there is a rectangular "box" with what apears to be a vacuum pipe attatched to it and also a yellow plug. has this anything to do with it?
Is there anywhere I can look to find out how the CC works? At least then it would give me some idea what the heck I was looking at/for.
