3008 - No FM/AM signal

Post by Keoun »

Hi,

I've recently purchased a 3008 hybrid - very happy with it except I soon realised that there was no FM/AM signal. Zero, not even the odd station with poor quality.
Everything else on the radio works, so can play CDs, sat nav works etc..

I've had a look at fuse F37 for the hi-fi amplifier and weirdly it had a 3a fuse in place and looked intact, I've replaced with the correct 20a fuse just in case it had blown but made no difference.

I've also replaced the aerial amplifier at the top of the boot in case this failed, part 9664378080, sadly still no signal. Although I am a little confused as this says FM2, is there another for FM1/AM?

Are there any other common faults / parts / areas to check?

Yes on some models there are 2 FM bands, one that is for current listening an another that is constantly searching for a better signal as you drive to ensure you always get the best signal.

Depending on your vehicle and it's installed equipment you ay have a rear screen-printed aerial and another via the roof aerial.

It's a 3008 with panoramic roof. NG4 double din radio with sat nav.

I've had a look in the gap between the panoramic roof glass and roof lining. I can see wires coming from the aerial and plugging into something. Is this the other (FM/AM) amplifier?

But since I'm getting neither AM or FM and there's nothing on the station list I'm guessing that both aren't working?
I read that they are triggered to turn on when the car starts. How would I check for 12v

I'll need your VIN to determine which type of aerial system you have. Please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff.

Ok, so...

(1) The aerial on the roof is for the AM, FM(1), GPS & GSM.
(2) The Unit on the tailgate connector is for the FM2 that I mentioned in my post and this is then routed from the adaptor unit and imprinted on the rear windscreen.

The other connections to the roof aerial (1) are awkward to get to because as you have the panoramic roof, the aerial connections have been moved behind the the rear blind sub-assembly, which is itself behind the rear crossmember. So the headlining, rear crossmember assembly and blind cassette need removing to get to it.

So the blind cassette would need to come off to get to the aerial assembly in the first picture.

Thanks. That first picture really helped. What I thought was another amplifier was just a bit of plastic holding the wire connectors in place.
I took the roof lining down from the boot side and it gave me decent access.

I was doing some continuity tests on my multimeter and the connectors going to the back of the radio to the three aerial connectors.
There's blue, which I believe is sat nav, that seemed fine.
White seemed fine too.
I could not get any continuity on the grey connector.

I did swap the white and grey ones over at the back of the radio to see if I could get any signal (I was hoping I would get "current listening" and could ignore the other "searching for a better signal" one for now) but still got nothing.

Since there doesn't seem to be an option on this radio for accessing FM2 directly, I assume this is the one that is "searching for a better signal" and both roof aerial and this combined give a better radio signal?
In which case even if 1 fails I should have *some* signal, surely?

Assuming the FM2 cable is the grey one going from the radio all the way to the FM2 amplifier. Nothing here either.
Is the cable uninterrupted all the way, or is there a join anywhere I can unplug and test?
Also what type of cable is it? Is it fakra? In case I need to buy a length of it

I wouldn't recommend swapping them about as some are pre-powered internally.

I've managed to fix the issue.
It turns out that the FM2 cable was broken somewhere.

I got a 5 metre fakra cable and as soon as I plugged it in I got good radio reception.
Spent the day properly wiring it in. Only downside is that it's visible when opening the boot as it's outside the rubber containing the harness, but I'm just happy that it's all working!
