C5 X7 suspension stuck on lowest after work on brakes

Post by Alphaeagle »

Hi Guys...

Please help...A mechanic friend of mine was working on my 2009 C5 X7, refurbing my brakes callipers and replacing the rear Brake discs and pads...

He did not raise the car to its highest setting on the hydraulic suspension......and was jacking up the car and using axel stands....

All was fine but the car is on its lowest and will not raise up....

Hellppppppppppppp

What can I do to get the car to raise back up????

Kind Regards

I would pressurise the system. It will only need about 7PSI to prime the pump. I know that Paul (citroenxm) managed to do so just by setting the suspension to a high setting, taking the cap off the LDS reservoir and then sealed his lips around the hole and blowing hard (I would make sure that is clean first though). I have made a pressurising cap by using an old LDS cap (I got it from a scrap yard), drilled a hole in it and then fitted a tyre valve into said hole. I have yet to use it though.

Hi and welcome.

First of all the braking circuit is entirely separate from the suspension on the X7, so has your mechanic not realised this and released a hydraulic bleed nipple from the rear suspension circuit thinking it was related to the braking circuit?

Secondly, he should of raised the car to the highest level before lifting the car up with he wheels hanging freely, and released the LDS cap, which should then be retightened when the car was lowered back to the ground.

If the car is running with suspension on normal height and it has not risen at the back after 3 minutes the pump may cut out to prevent over heating. Is the hydraulic pump making a noise? Leave the car switched off for a while to allow the hydraulic pump to cool down. Then advise us as the whether it is operating when switching the engine on.

If the pump is working (until it cuts out again), then it may be the bleed valve, or the rear height corrector has been dislodged on the rear anti roll bar.

James, he can’t raise the car!

This happens whenever I jack one corner of the car. For some reason the car decides to depressurise the hydraulic circuit. I usually have to start the engine and raise it up so that I can get my jack back!

Marc, I didn't say raised (as it wouldn't lift), I said setting. That meant that, once the pump was primed (blowing into the LDS reservoir), the pump had a height to aim for.

Oops! When I had the front tyres on my C5 replaced, I loosened off the LDS cap (to the amusement of the tyre fitters). They were surprised that, when they lowered her back down again, she came to rest at the height she had started from, and they could easily get their jacks back. They also said they would try to remember that trick.

Yes but it is already at the lowest setting, so just getting it to normal height should suffice. If the pump is already being overworked, putting onto a higher level will just cause it to cut out again from overwork.

So does loosening the cap before jacking one wheel stop it from dropping?

I've found that as long as you keep the doors closed when jacking one corner it's fine. But, as soon as you touch a door the BHI wakes up and craps itself because the car isn't level. It then decides the best course of action is to depressurise the whole system!

Never have a problem - Always raise to highest setting first before any wheel-off-road jacking - and as far as the LDS cap goes, I only tend to loosen it when more than one wheel is lifted off.

No-one seems to have mentioned checking the 40A fuse for the pump?

I did ask if the pump was making a noise in my initial response, but I think we need some more feedback from the OP at this point to get a little more info.

Check the 40 amp fuse.... the nightmare I had with my yolk only to realise it was blown....
