It was Jim who did mine and it was mine which he devised a bleed screw on.

I've had a look at the slave cylinder and removed it from the bell housing today. It came out in one piece with the pushrod still attached. There is no visible signs of fluid leaking through the end of the cylinder. I am able to push the rod back in slowly with quite some exertion needed but have left it to slowly push out again. Clutch pedal has been wedged so it can't be pushed down. Should I push the rod back in and tie it or will it be ok left as is?
I have taken some pictures - do you think the fact there is no fluid loss will mean it maybe won't need bleeding or will air have got in anyway?

It looks like you have been lucky. The slave cylinder is probably OK, and may not even need bleeding.

The piston should be kept pushed in. When new replacements were supplied, they came with a plastic shipping cover that restrained the plunger, and I think the service instructions say that it should be refitted if the slave cylinder is ever removed from the bell housing. I suppose you can use some welding wire or similar to wire the plunger to keep it in place while the clutch is worked on.

I would imagine thrust bearing has broken up which would explain the noise you were hearing. Gearbox out job . New clutch will normally come as a 3 piece kit thrust bearing included. You could buy a new car and the clutch may go . Or replace yours

Yes let's hope I've been lucky.
I've pushed the rod back in and used Gorilla tape to hold it in place. It should work, it's amazing stuff!

Yes that seems to be the story with this particular clutch problem.
The garage who I might be entrusting it to is hoping to do the job whilst leaving the gearbox in situ. Do-able do you think?

Absolutely no way to replace the release bearing, pressure plate and/or disc with the gearbox in situ, unless they mean to remove the engine instead. This may be easier, depending on what equipment they have.
In reality, there's probably more work in removing the 'box on a Xantia, because of all the plumbing strapped to a tray, itself secured by magic, to the top of the box.
The engine is pretty standard and a walk in the park for anyone geared up for engine transplants.
The only cars I've ever found that could have their clutches changed without splitting engine and box were the BMC A series (Mini, Metro, 1100, 1300etc) and the early FWD Kadett and Ascona (Astra and Cavalier in UK). Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.
Although, I find it hard to believe that ANY garage might be in business without knowing this, so I suspect the O/P may have misunderstood something.

On many vehicles, including I think Xantias with the BE3 gearbox, there is enough room to split the engine and gearbox, slide the gearbox away from the engine to create enough space to change the clutch without actually removing the gearbox.

I trust Jim's advice when he said that this cannot be done with the ML5T transmission in a Xantia

If the thrust bearing is worn so will the clutch be. Gearbox needs to be removed ,it is the pipe work that makes it awkward good days work,

I'm pretty sure Paul did one of these without actually dropping the box out, and Jim nearly did it on Davie's Activa, till he got it stuck...!

I'm pretty sure they were thinking of splitting the box from the engine and then moving it to one side without having to completely remove it and therefore, presumably, leaving the pipework in situ. I guess once they realise they can't do it they will have to remove it. I just hope they take their time and don't do any damage to the hydraulics, as they're not a Citroen specialist. Is there anything in particular that they need to watch out for regarding the hydraulic system?

I think he actually did it on my car but then had to take it out and redo it for some reason and had to take it out completely the second time. Of course I could be remembering wrong and speaking crap here lol

Have done clutch before on several Xantias . The gearbox has to come out, it’s not a short cut trying to do it in situ.

citroenxm wrote: 11 Oct 2013, 22:02 I wouldn't wish a HDi 110 clutch job on anyone!!

The ML type box (Hydraulic clutch change box, I forget the code for them now) is a bigger box then the BE box in the XUD and HDi 90 cars, and same amount of engine bay space, and therefore makes VERY tight space, and vurtually NO space to work when the box is away from the engine.

My car was the First exclusive HDi Ive done, others have been LX and SX models, and so the front centre sphere and hydractive block DO get in the way of the box shuffle, and NEEDS to come away.

NO I do not drop the box out, its one heavy Mother F of a box to try and lift up again!!! I use a jack to help hold it up.

After a lot of shuffleing and farting around I could only JUST get the box away from the engine, but still had a squeeze to get the pressure plate out. However, if your release bearing is still attached to the pressure plate, then it be an even harder task, as the box wont come away far enough for the input shaft to come out of the release bearing. All the 110 HDi clutchs Ive done so far have all had failed release bearings, where the release bearing has stayed on the input shaft meaning the pressure plate just cleared the input shaft after undooing, after a bit of box shoving.

I really detest hdi 110 clutch changes, and didn't really want to do this one. But was forced to due to finanical reasons which have not eased at all..
