I drive a 2002 Citroen C5 (2 Litre petrol) which I bought new. I was very satisfied with the car until the following problem started.
When I start the car for the first time (mornings) it starts perfectly and idles perfectly. After ± 45 seconds the car started to idle unevenly (car starts shaking due to this uneven idling) might be the save mode (no power) and sometimes the engine stalls. The following is displayed “Catalytic Convertor Fault” and the engine light starts flashing with the service indication light permanently on.
To reset this save mode you have to restart the car. The car starts easily but still idles unevenly until the engine reaches a certain temperature after which the engine performs normal. After restarting the car the display changes to “Antipollution Fault” and the engine light stops flashing but stays constantly on as well as the service indication light.
As I understand this has also happened to other C5s. I have however not see any correspondence with regard to possible causes for this problem.
Is there anybody that can provide me with solutions or direction to solve this problem?

With most problems on the C5 you really need to get the BSI read to see what error codes are stored.
As a long shot the temperature sender might be faulty. This supplies the BSI with engine temperaure information and the BSI (or rather the injection controller) will then pump in what petrol it thinks the engine needs. Does the temp gauge work correctly?

Thanks for the feedback. The needle of the temperature gauge now moves up to approximately a quarter of the gauge. If I am correct the needle of the temperature gauge should move up to just under the halfway mark.
Do you possibly know where the temperature sender is located in the engine?
Thanks
Herman

Scratch that last post - that's for the diesel!
Sorry I have no idea of where it is for the petrol. It does sound like the opposite of the problem with my daughter's VW Polo which, as I said in that other post, was cured with a new temp sender.

Hi Herman, and welcome to the C5’s fetish about pollution.
The temperature sender on the petrol engine is in the thermostat housing.
It’s green and visible from the passenger’s side about where the fuse box, the brake servo and the master cylinder reservoir are.
The brake servo and reservoir are at top right of the picture but the sender can only be seen near there from the other side.
