Mk 1 Simplex ignition switch

Post by Deanxm »

Hi all

I found yesterday that the reason the fan was not working on the activa was not because it was full of water at all but because the ignition switch was failing, seems a bit daft sending all that current through a ignition switch.
Ive had a chat with xmexc who said Jim has a mod for this problem (and i would like to know more) but what i need to know is are derv and petrol ignition switches rather than the locks interchangeable? ive found a 1.9 derv sinker in the local scrappy and pinched the switch but the wires are in different places on the switch itself.

Anyone know so i dont have to test it....maybe..... before i put it back on the car and connect the power

To be honest, either way, you'd best do the relay mod as you'll just be putting the current through another old ignition switch.

Thankls Xac, yeah this is what XMexc said about the simplex switches, i think "crap" was the word used  .

Could anyone guide an electromoron through the mod, i take it you just need to pick up the wires from the brown plug and use them to trigger a relay but where in the engine bay can i find them, fuse box?

the reason the contacts in the ingnition become burnt is through it being switched on and off whilst high current draw items are still switched on,

i tell my customers to switch everything off before switching the ignition on or off, this will help to stop the switch failing prematurly,
