AirCon Re-Gassing

Post by mikep »

The aircon on my immaculate 1996 Citroen Xantia 1.8 Auto is not what is
was, a local garage is offering re-gassing for £65 inclusive. I've no idea
if this is a fair price or even if it will improve my aircon. Can any expert
out there give me some advice-thanks.<< Mike P

Unless it is years since the air/con was gassed or if it is the original charge, the loss of refrigerant will be due to a leak.
To be fixed properly, it is possible that a leak exists somewhere in the system and to re-gas without looking for and repairing is a waste of money unless they guarantee the job to be free from leaks.
Some have a habit of just regassing and flying by the seat of their pants as regards the leaks go, but sometimes, you can find these yourself by looking for oil stains around joints.
Most common cause of leaks in car air con is the "O" rings on the joints flattening out due to age, with a result, the lose their elasticity and leak.
"O" rings aren't an expensive item; the cost is in the labour fitting them.

Kwikfit offer a recharge service for £44.95.

"Cooler air-conditioning or your money back guarantee"

See link http://www.kwik-fit.com/about-air-conditioning.asp

Not sure what happens if they find a leak.

My missus used the service last year and her ac is still fine this year.

I'd feel better using this service than a local garage, myself.

Just had mine done by a guy recommended by the mechanic I invariably use for my Citroens.
Came to the door an hour after I made contact with him - he was 1/4 mile away on the same estate.

Regassed mine, which was empty, repaired the tailgate window (estate).

Also regassed my son's 306, replaced a burned out relay and relay socket.

£90 all in. I'm happy with that.

If anyone in the Washington/Newcastle/Sunderland/Durham are want his details feel free to PM me.
The info may possibly be added to the recommended repairers thread, if the mods and admins approve.

The improvement was really appreciated as it hit 29°C this afternoon, as I was off to do the shopping. The heat hit me like a wall when I stepped out of the car.

Knowing Kwikfit, if there wasn't a leak before, there will be after. I've seen the way they "test" your exhaust system if you just want a rear box replaced.

never had any probs with kwik fit i go out and stand right behind the ramps and watch them fit my exhaust. found out recently a cherry bomb back box is only £35 online my back box is £100 at kwik fit so I'm gonna be noisey next time around. £65 does seem a lot for an air con charge I'd shop around a bit first of all ask the neighbours maybe, however there is a charge wrapped up in there for disposal of the old refridgerant.
Citroen Xantia S2 1.9 TD estate 189K soon to be broken for parts Jan 2017 headlamps & radiator fan assembly already spoken for & A 1987 Citroen 2CV6 special just for fun.

I had mine recharged, plus my son's 306, plus new relays and sockets in the 306 and he rewired my rear window (in the tailgate)
£90 the lot, from a local mobile autoelectrician/aircon specialist.

Came to the door half an hour after I phoned him - he was working in the next street.

He did evacuate the system, did a pressure test then refilled it in each car.

Novice question " Is the air-con regassing anyway connected to the heating system ie. matrix . As known gassing may disrupt things that might be better to have left . thank's

No the heater matrix and aircon evaporator are entirely separate units in the heater box. I know matrixes are delicate little flowers but an aircon re-gas will have no effect at all on it :D

Halfruads aircon Kit is what i've used with no issues.
Obviously not as good as vacuming out the system but has sufficed in my last few xantias with AC and the pressure guage has packed up but i'll replace that soon. The cans can be quite cheap as well so if its only a topup its good and helps you find the leak as well to DIY fix if wanted?
