Wanted: S2 Xantia Strut Tops

Post by Edhertz »

Long shot I know but I’ll ask anyway. My S2 Xantia’s strut tops have got the usual metal worm and will have to be replaced. These are the hydractive types with 10mm pipe and approx 15mm union,

I have two brand new strut tops. They are the M8 union type. From memory, I believe they can be retapped to M10 but my memory is rubbish atm. Any comments on the viability of this?

You can always try Eurocarcare in Derby.

I managed to get a pair during lockdown for £85 a piece for my S2.

Sadly however they went up in price quite substantially to £128 from memory after lockdown.

They come with an adapter so they work with hydractive or non-hydractive cars.

Wowsers! Have they put the price up again?

I've just tried to call them as I am struggling to get a good seal on some strut top mounts another member did a deal on for me.

I need to get another adapter made asap as mate is quite bored now of my car sitting up at his garage for 2 months and nothing working!

When do you expect to receive them? Might need a few measurements off the adapters please when you do receive them and before you fit them if at all possible.

Got another mate who will make me some adapters but his patience will be very thin if we have to guess the flare on the end of the adapter and it doesn't work out...

I am mate. Bloody nightmare.

Bought new seals for the strut tops where the ram comes through because m, without checking, I thought one of the seals had either been left out or damaged by the threads on the ram.

MOT station failed car back in mid December. Then life took over and I’ve been too busy to look at it so it was sat up there since.

Went up today and there was clearly a slight weep from the mount because it had rained, we knew that it had been leaking. I said to my mate that a little oil goes a long way in a puddle and it does.

So removed the pipe and the adapter Jim knocked up and out an o-ring behind to see if I could snug it up.

No chance. It was far worse. Absolutely piddling out. Now I cannot get the o-ring out and have actually pushed it into the note further. Not too bothered about that at the moment so long as it doesn’t foul the adapter.

Was hopefully going to get a mate to machine a new adapter up in steel over the weekend but am tempted to wait until edhertz receives his tops so I can hopefully get some measurements from them.

I do have the same adapters on the HDi but I am loathed to touch them just in case I end up with two cars with issues.

Not sure what you have going on there....are you saying it is leaking from the adaptor that Jim made for you ?....seems strange to me as that would infer that it is leaking past the pipe seal....which would be a poor seal, a badly seated seal or a fracture in the pipe....or not inserted correctly.

Yes it is. Jim had doubts about it with it being in alloy. It is leaking up the threads. Going to have a very careful inspection of the other top which has not been installed yet either tomorrow or Saturday.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the end of the adapter needs to have a 37 or 45 degree SAE flare on it to seal. It is not leaking from the threads on the 3.5 mm. pipe. That is dry.

Anyhoo! Hope you are keeping well.

Ohhh, ok, thought it was the strut tops leaking.

Anyway, it is for some reason not making a seal --Pipe 2 pipe--- I wonder why. Have you tried removing at all and re-seating the pipe after cleaning/checking the hole, inspecting the pipe flair end etc to make sure there is nothing wrong...........

Hi, Glad to help out with the adaptors, delivery 10 days. Frankly I've got so used to the price of things going up so these strut tops are no different. Could be a good move by some enterprising individual to buy a bunch of these for investment purposes given that rate of increase. Question: Did you replace the bump stops and gaiters when you did the struts? I would welcome any info you can give me on 'O' ring sizes that need to be replaced,
Cheers, Alan

So not before next weekend then by the sounds of it! Cor! Lummy! My mate will have steam coming out of his ears by then if the car sits at his garage for another 2 weeks...

It is what it is.

I don't think it would be worth stockpiling them to be honest. Can't see prices rising much more.

Personally, I didn't replace the bump stops. Be aware though that the if you are non-hydractive that your gaiters will likely not locate into place. I have this exact issue with the strut tops I have got off someone on the forum. Obviously I didn't even consider that as my HDI ones didn't have the same issue from memory even though they were hydractive either! I need to get some replacement gaiters from Dr. Xantia in Turkey for the S1.

I'd better check the S2 also to see if that needs a pair too!!!

The new tops should come with the o-rings where the ram goes through already pre-installed. If not, shout up because I wasted £18 on buying some new Viton ones so I have a stash for anyone needing some. Citroen wanted £56 for a bag of 10 and couldn't supply one of the sizes any more.

The bump stops are easily obtainable but the gaiters, part no 527192 are it's fair to say pretty nigh extinct. We'll see how it goes with the rings,

Edhertz!

I am waiting with baited breath. I guess the tops will be with you in the coming days all being well. Hopefully, you have a set of calipers. If not, no problem as I know most of the sizes but a clear photo of the adapter that converts an S1 to the S2 mount would be GREATLY appreciated.
